I would reckon that it's a one bike only deal. There's not even an add to cart button. In other words one lucky person only gets it.

    • Well it says: Availability: In-store, plus Size CM: 52cm, 53cm, 54cm, 55cm, 56cm, so I was hoping there was more than 1.
It just looks like a discontinued model as it is no longer on the Avanti website.

      • +2

Yeah you must be right and i stand corrected. Must be 5 sizes available.

        • Yeah the 53cm version is gone now, so it looks like multiple sizes.

  • +3

Good deal OP! That's a lot of bike for the money. Does anyone know if it's possible to haggle and get free/discounted interstate shipping?

    • +4

At this price I would say there is very little room for haggling!

    • +4

I rang the shop, they advised they will not ship this interstate

    • My mate rang them about a different bike last week and they advised they wouldn't ship. He ended up buying another Avanti from a dealer in Brisbane for not quite as good a deal but still a cracker price.

[INSERT COMMENT FROM JV ABOUT PEDALS]

    • +2

you don't get pedals on descent bikes, the pedals usually come with the cleats

        • Most good bike stores have 'ish' hours…. they just usually publish normal hours!

        • I used to live just up the road from the shop. Its owned by an elderly guy, i guess he works when he can?

      • +24

you don't get pedals on descent bikes

Of course not as when you're descending you don't need to pedal.

I'd be disappointed if this was an ascending bike without pedals.

  • +4

Great deal. Great introduction to road biking for anyone wanting to start out.

    • Agreed, if only I had money, I could finally stop dreaming!

      • +1

Won't you just lose all the money when you wake up?

        • But it would be motivation! If I can do it in dream world, surely I can do it in the real world!

  • +1

side note, only good if you're between 5'2" & 5'9" with the sizes available … but if you're 5'8"+ you'd be better with a larger size

    • +1

not necessarily, I'm 5 ft 10 with short arms and I ride a 52 or a 54. I have friends 6 ft - ish that ride a 56. I would say this size range would fit most people, if you are taller than around 6ft 2 ish you would probably need a bigger frame. A 5 ft 8 person would probably be riding a 50cm frame, maybe a 52.

  • +3

Even better price than some used bikes advertised on Gumtree.

    • I have a Propel running 105, and put out more than enough watts. 105 handles it no worries. Plenty of "serious riders" on Saturday morning running Dura-ace on their coffee ride… pointless.

    • +18

I would hardly call 105 entry level, its mid-range IMHO

      • +2

Especially the 5800 105. Only really difference between it and the 6800 is weight.

      • +1

Isn't that just pure 'weekend warrior' snobbery.

I've put probably 30-40,000km on my 105 5700, and though its probably due for a new cassette and derailleur it's still churning the KMs.

105 remains almost perfect for performance vs price for mid-range.

    • +2

Whilst I agree it was probably overpriced at the start, I dont think 105 is entry level these days. Sora or Tiagra maybe. I had 105 gruppo on my old Avanti and it did 30,000kms.

yes, Ultegra is better, but 105 is sufficient for most people I would have thought.

And those wheels are rubbish if the rider is 75kg plus.

      • Agree, I would be more worried about the cheap wheels than the groupset. I have an aluminium bike I use for commuting that has a 105 groupset and my main ride for Sunday coffee shop runs has Di2. I also have an Ultegra Groupset in a box stripped off a bike I crashed last year. The groupsets are progressively better as expected and the Di2 is telepathic in how quickly and easily it changes, but it is also much more expensive. The 105 is OK and I reckon better wheels would be a better investment.

The $2500 RRP looks a little steep for this bike upfront but the sale price looks like a good deal.

      • Rubbish in that they will sink? I'm 83kg is that too heavy for it?

Have been interested in getting a bike for a while

I know it's not a hybrid, but can this go on gravel cycling tracks?

        • rubbish, as in, you'll break spokes.
You can take any bikes on gravel tracks, you just need the right skills.

Road bikes on gravel tracks have a few issues: skinny tyres, uncomfortable geometry and saddle, as well as possible gear-ratio issues, if your gravel tracks are uphill

        • +1

Rubbish as in they are heavy, spokes probably more prone to snapping and the hubs probably wont roll as easy meaning wasted energy. They may also be less stiff meaning they might flex a bit under power also wasting energy. If you want to be rolling around on gravel tracks you also culd do with some slightly wider tyres, these are 23's I think, for regular gravel riding you probably want 28 or 32 wide tyres, 25 at the very least. Not sure what width tyres these wheels will take.

    • Definetely not entry level.

Sora and Claris are entry level.

The order of quality and price is as per this table: http://oi66.tinypic.com/2rgdwxv.jpg

    • +1

105 is not entry level, but even if it was, there is no need to ditch a perfectly fine and new group set on a bike for something more expensive.

    • +1

      You're kidding right?

105 group set is more than sufficient for this type of bike.

      • 105 group set is more than sufficient for this type of bike.

Lets not start a religious argument. Might as well go to a "gamer" thread and tell them a Celeron is more than sufficient since they are "just playing games", nothing professional :)

I try to tell people that a 10-speed steel frame was good enough for Eddy Merckx. I wonder how that bike would go in a time-trial now?

    • -1

105 is entry level for people that take their cycling seriously. Probably overkill for commuters and the like, probably good for those on a budget but probably bottom of the heap for the Sunday morning shop ride set or the local club racers. Practically it is probably sufficient for 99% of us for 99% of the riding we do but personally I love my Di2. I used to have a Cervelo S3 with Rotor Cranks and I loved those cranks as well! The 105 on my 2nd bike is good enough for the level of cyclist I am but the Di2 on my main bike is awesome!

  • Decent amount of bike for a good price.

For reference, I'm 6 ft 2 and ride a 57cm. Have ridden a 56cm and found it quite comfortable and manageable when set up correctly.

  • The 105 groupset is $500.

How many for sale? Anyone tried phoning the seller? I'm a bit sceptical. Normally 10 is minimum quantity to list on Ozb.
    Good luck.

    • Didn't know there was a minimum! Whoops! Just posted as too good not to!

      • Its a guideline rather than a rule.
For a really good price on a big-ticket item, it is flexible.

This would be great price until you have a minor crash, then you'll be wishing you'd bought an alloy frame instead of carbon-reinforced plastic :-)

        • Ahh, I see. Thanks for the tip!

  • +2

damn this is a good deal

  • Great deal, was shopping for a bike for my son who is now 183cm and still growing. I bought a 58cm CAAD8 $999 - http://lawrenciacycles.com.au/product-detail/2016-cannondale… thought was a good price
Well done OP for finding the deal!

    • That's a great deal too! The only major difference is the frame material. Still a good buy! It comes with pedals too!

      • +1

That's a great deal. I bought that exact CAAD8 105 5 at Bike Force Docklands for $1,249 in Dec 16. The Wellgo pedals that comes with the bike is rubbish. But if you are new to road bikes, it's adequate until you go clip-less.

  • Why there such huge gap price?

    • +1

You mean discount? No idea, as mentioned it seems to be discontinued, so likely just trying to clear out old models.

    • +1

Probably an old model. The classics have started in Europe (racing season) so most of the bike manufacturers will be bringing out their new models. Old stock from old models will probably be on run-out if not already then very soon to make way for the shiny new models fresh from victory in Europe.

  • +3

Tempted to buy one, strip off the 105 groupset, replace it with an Ultegra groupset I took off a bike I crashed. Sell the brand new 105 groupset and cheap wheels on Facebook and use the proceeds to buy a better set of wheels and a better saddle.

    • Sounds like a pretty good plan tbh!

    • Are you on Bicycle Market?

      • Yep! Along with 'Buy Swap Sell Road Bikes Melbourne' and 2 or 3 others

  • Good bike with good group-set at good price…

  • +2

    105
    full carbon
    heaps of sizes
    sub $1000

    BARGAIN!

  • Where does Avanti rank against other brands like Merida, Giant, etc?

    • +10

Right along side all of them on the loading dock at the Taiwanese factory they are all made in.

      • +1

But Giant bicycles are made in their own factories, while Avanti … may well be made in the Giant factory?
        Or maybe the Merida factory.

        • My Trek Madone 9 has a 'Made in Taiwan' sticker on the bottom, pretty sure my friend's Colnago C60 does too. This bike is maybe not made in the Giant factory but its made in one of the 2 or 3 massive carbon factories in Taiwan

    • I think they are a Kiwi company that made their way over to Aussie. They are pretty good.

  • I wish I lived in Melbourne, I'm in the market for a road bike!

    • You can arrange for a delivery according to the BikeExchange T&C.

      "Shipping and Delivery Policy

Standard delivery time frames are between 3-10 business days; in the event that an ordered item is not available or we are unable to fulfil your order we will notify you within 2 business days to arrange an agreeable alternative item, a backorder or a full refund."

      • Comment from @french1e:

I rang the shop, they advised they will not ship this interstate

        • Oh well. Never mind.

        • +1

          @hollykryten:

just get someone like me that will happily ship it to you for a small fee LOL

  • Looks like a great deal, all those people that post on here for bicycle recommendations and you budget is around $700-800, spend a little extra and buy this ^

  • Frameset alone is on sale for $1799 on Bikeexchange, I'm trying to find the weight, the "SL" I thought normally stood for superlight, but that's a vague term for some manufactures…

Rear brake mounted near bottom bracket, I'd buy just for that :)

    • In the Avanti Cosa range SL is the regular road and DR is the aero road.

  • .. full 105 group set, carbon frame for $1k.. it's a good deal. Now all it needs is some 105 pedals :)
    (comparing the Cannondale CAAD8 105 5 (2016) at $1k - $1.25K and Trek 1.2 C H2 (2017) Sora gruppo at $1.1k+)

  • non-serious comment:
this thing rides itself right - because there are no pedals ?

  • -1

Guys I need your advice. I'm 190KGs 4' is this bike good for me

    • +3

      No you need a bus..

    • You would probably need some stronger wheels. I would check with the shop if the frame has a weight rating. There are plemnty of good wheels around that have no weight rating or are made for heavier riders but the wheels on the bike in the picture are very entry level and might not be strong enough.

  • none left as of 3.50 pn AEST?

  • How come jv has not commented on this deal?

  • -1

Two and a half grand RRP for a bike that doesn't have disc brakes! What am I missing?

    • +2

How about this one then, $18,599 and still no disc brakes… https://www.canyon.com/en-au/road/ultimate/ultimate-cf-evo-1…

Disc brakes on quality road bikes are only very very new. You are not allowed to enter Cycling Australia sanctioned races yet with disc brakes as they are not approved by the world governing body.

      • That Canyon is a nice piece of kit. Those Meilenstein wheels would be half the cost!

  • There are run out deals on all older model Avanti's at the moment. My mate just picked up a 2015 model full carbon, 11s mech ultegra, from the Avanti shop in the valley here in Brisbane, got about 45% off the original list price.

Personally i would love something like this as an upgrade from my ultegra di2 giant propel - https://www.bikeexchange.com.au/a/road-bikes/avanti/vic/pres…

  • Another good deal from the same shop here, $3800 down to $1800 - https://www.bikeexchange.com.au/a/road-bikes/avanti/vic/pres…
