Good 4k Gaming TV to Replace Samsung 55KS8000

Hello all,

I bought a 55inch Samsung ks8000 in October last year. I love this tv but unfortunately a major fault has surfaced with the tv. Both my gaming PC and PS4 pro when running in 4k 60 Hertz cause an intermittent screen flashing where the image drops out and returns in rapid succession causing a strobe like effect making playing games impossible. The colours also seperate into different red green and blue layers intermittently. Before you offer a solution, I have spent dozens of hours researching the problem and have found many, many people with the issue. I have also bought high bandwidth HDMI cables. The issue seems to be a problem with the firmware or one connect box. Temporarily disabling 10 bit UHD colour and turning it back on fixes it temporarily. I have a technician from Samsung coming soon and I will attempt to get a full refund for the issue as it was a $2800 TV. I can't tolerate the problem anymore as no amount of firmware updates or calls to Samsung have done anything. Here is a video of what's happening from another owner: https://youtu.be/1JKtX8WSXr0

Any way, what's a good gaming tv with 4k and HDR? Are the LG OLED TVs that bad with latency or is there a cheaper tv that's good value for money? Thanks.

Lol wow, you purchased it for $2800? It was selling for $1495 in December at The Good Guys.

Unrelated story, the one I bought was faulty. It was lighting up a horizontal line at the bottom of the screen. Organised to get it replaced by Samsung. They didn't have any 55" Series 8 model left so they offered me a 55" Series 9 model. Not sure if upgrading it to a newer model would solve the problem.

Thanks for pointing out how much money I over spent and offering a suggestion of an alternative tv from a manufacturer other than Samsung.

      • Well this is OzBaragain, right? In your situation, I would also opt for a refund since you overpaid for the current model.

        • Yes I agree with you completely. I will persevere to get back all my mulla for this telly. What telly should I get to replace it though? I feel this whole 4k thing has been rushed by manufacturers. Really, I don't care about smart features or anything. I basically want a 55 inch 4k computer monitor that does HDR.

  • "I have also bought very expensive high bandwidth HDMI cables." - more expensive cables have no benefit.

    • 4k 444 60 Hertz signal will cause packets with errors to pass through on cheaper cables causing flickering. I have tested this. 30 Hertz no problem with cheap cables. You need to think high bandwidth, then your cheap cables won't seem like a bargain. A $1000 for a cable is bullshit. I paid $24 for my high bandwidth cable thank you. $24 monoprice cable is "expensive" too me.

  • very expensive high bandwidth HDMI cables.

Er … high bandwidth as compared to what … other HDMI cables that work?

    • Have you run full 444 RGB 60 Hertz material through a $10 hdmi? I guarantee you it won't be a steady ride. 1080p you can use a bit of coat hanger wire but when you start pushing the current HDMI spec limit you'll find your HDMI cables may not do what you need.

  • I hear the Hisense tvs are pretty good. The 55M7000UWG can be got for about $1100.

    • For the budget end of the spectrum this would be my vote but if you can afford it the LG oleds are probably the best money can buy.

This is the best overall tv review channel I have found on YouTube there are some many great others but this channel does a great end of year summary overhaul.

The host also has a great accent and presenter value. Highly recommend.

  • I've been using my PS4 Pro with my LG OLED B6 and it's been great. Games like Horizon Zero Dawn looks amazing on it and I personally haven't found any issues with latency. If any grievance I find the screen a little dim when playing in a dark room but that's one of the issues of OLED. Also, although the screen looks fantastic, it's still expensive with the retail price still under $3000.

    • Considering it's only $200 more than the stupid money I paid for this tv I think I might go with it

      • I can second the LG OLED55B6. It's amazing. I grabbed one when i sale at JB Hifi a month ago and it has been fantastic. I actually find it bright which is different to MonkeyBoy but perhaps my general use/tolerances are different.

It's a great TV. Recently updated with HDR Game mode which reduces latency, but tbh i've never had an issue even before the update. The first thing i did was boot up Horizon Zero Dawn on it and then Uncharted 4, and the quality is amazing. I didn't think even the PS4 Pro had it in it to do such great images.

  • Costco has Sony Bravia on sale at the moment, a 55" was under $1000 yesterday. I do personally believe Bravia are the best TV. Dark Souls looks breathtaking on mine.

  • Genuine question, how close are you sitting near the TV when you game/watch it?

You might want to have a look at this image before spending money on something which may not benefit you - http://i.rtings.com/images/optimal-viewing-distance-televisiā€¦

So got my full money back on the Samsung ks8000 as I was 5months and 30 days (lol) inside of the JB hi-fi 6month refund or replace/repair. Wouldn't have had the refund option after 6 months I'm now sitting back with a poor man's Kogan 1080p 42 inch and waiting for a decent sale on something OLED. Hopefully the other brands will bring the LG OLEDs down in price. Thanks for the contributions and recommendations.

    • For what it's worth the 75 inch Sony kd75x8500d and 75 inch Hisense 75m7000uwd are both on sale now from Bing Lee click and collect roughly $3400 and $2550 respectively.

      • Thanks for the tip. I'd love a 75 inch but it won't fit in the apartment lol
