Help Me Get Better Mobile Internet

I use Galaxy S7 Edge with Optus Network to tether internet to my laptop during my commute to work in Sydney.
The experience is really disappointing. Persistent buffering in online streaming. Rich content websites struggling to load and sometimes complete dropouts for a few minutes. This will happen about 25% of the time. How can I get better and more reliable mobile internet ?

  • There are many possibilities, and you've included most of them in your poll. However, unless you can borrow equipment to try, you're not going to know which option works best in your particular circumstances.

I guess the easiest thing to do would be to buy a prepaid Telstra and/or Vodafone sim card with some mobile data on it and try it in your phone temporarily.

  • I always had a horrible time tethering on samsung devices. Let alone the optus network too. Could be a combo of both.

Are you commuting on the train?

    • ^ Also what train line? Different lines will have different reception. I've also heard that different models of train make a difference?? But I'm not sure I believe that.

      • It sounds possible to me since metal blocks EM radiation. If the train had no openings at all then wireless communication wouldn't work at all so the shapes of Windows windows and the skin of the train would likely have an effect.

  • Try some of the introductory offer cheap sims like the $1 one from Kogan (14G data unlimited free calls and txt 30days) (search ozb at the top) or WW or others currently on offer.
Put your current sim into a spare phone just to receive on your current number while you do your trial.
Tip.. If you are using 4G then try it with just 3G.

  • Buy 1 telstra sim and 1 vodafone sim and then use them while keeping a diary or notes about how bad either one is.

After that you can try resellers of these networks however I have noticed large differences in performance between Telstra and Telstra owned reseller Boost whilst using them on my commute so YMMV.

  • I remember using mobile data in Japan on the bullet train no problems. Also Virgin high speed rail in UK. Also TGV Europe … These trains travel greater distances (allude to tower switching and tower availability) at greater speeds (signal persistence). I'd say the biggest killer is a combination of network congestion on train (surely others are streaming stuff on their commute) and signal degradation as a result of rail infrastructure and the train's design. When your device receives/transmits data to/from the tower through certain materials, noise and interference can be introduced into the signal. 3G (and I believe it's successors) combat this with Pilot Tokens which are known to both the network and device prior to transmission allowing for dynamic correction of this signal interference through the difference in the expected value of the Pilot Tokens. This results in what is referred to as graceful degradation.

Good luck sorting it out but there are so many variables it'll be hard to pin point the problem.
