TomTom GO520 5" GPS Unit - $229.60 @ JB Hi-Fi

60

It was $329 before, I got it for $278 from the good guys and I thought it was a good deal. But at $230 it's really a bargain as I've never seen cheaper price on this one. Anyway it's a nice reliable standalone gps unit if you are on your Ps, if you are full liscencer just ignore as mobile google map is a better choice.

  • Is this the best value in tom tom range currently in Jb? seems expensive for a GPS.. what so special with this model? thanks

I haven't used a dedicated GPS unit since last 3 year since Google Maps app has improved so much - it also highlights live traffic update on the route. I guess the only short coming of the app is the speed and red light camera alerts are missing, its a drain of the phone battery and its hard to use other features of the phone while the GPS is running. Might be a bargain price but quite an unnecessary expense for some of us.

  • Is there any point in spending money on a standalone GPS unit, when people can use Google Maps.

    • Tomtom is dead and they know it. I'm sure all remaining employees are keeping their resume handy.

As I said in the post, If you on on your Ps, standalone gps is for you, if you have full liscense then just ignore and keep using Google map because it's free

      • what is Ps?

        • P plate, so basically if you are holding a P in NSW, you can not use any function of you phone while driving including navigation

It could be useful for someone that doesn't know how to work their smart phone.
I know some old people that still have the Melways (Sydway for you?)in their car.

      • If they can't use a smart phone, doubt they can operate a tomtom

    • Depending on your state, L and P platers can't use their phone even for navigation.

when I posted this DEAL last time, someone suggested me to use waze, I tried that and it is very good.. Go for it.. Don't waste money on TomTom devices any more

  • My TomTom don't seem to get lifetime maps update eventhough it was promised when I buy it, anyone have similar issues? Think is a Via220 or 260.

  • bought it last time $243.08 when ebay have 20% off.

i must admint, OP's post is very good in price, comes with worldwide map, for my case.

i am holding full license, but still prefer GPS rather than google maps.
i travel a lot to the country side for photography.

phone signal may be poor on certain small town.

    • About the phone signal being poor in certain areas. It's better to download the maps offline when you are home. It also uses less data even when you have full signal strength. I even used it by downloading offline maps for my overseas trip and then use google maps.

  • 520/620 includes live traffic as well but requires a mobile phone connection to get the data.
5200/6200 TomTom Traffic via built-in SIM so no extra data charges.

Used a TomTom for a trip up to the Gold Coast from Sydney recently. Had the latest maps but it didn't have the most recent changes to the Pacific Motorway and kept trying to backtrack me hundreds of kilometers to use a road that doesn't exist anymore. I was surprised because I've always found i t fine for driving locally and even on trips Newcastle and WOllongong way. I just can't justify the spend if it's less accurate than my phone. The only things missing on Google maps are speeds for current road/overspeed alert/camera alert.

I agree about the missing speed limits / camera alerts from Google Maps. I don't know what is preventing google from doing that. This feature used to be on other applications for a long time.

  • Download "TomTom Speed Cameras" app on mobile & use it in Overlay mode on Google maps ..It will alert you for speed cameras & show speed limit.

    • Thanks. Will try this app. Was really missing the speed limits from Google Maps.

  • Tomtom also doesn't natively support school zones.

Its default for this is schools, education institutions and places of worship as the only option. With no option for selecting just schools.

You can however manually add a POI with just schools and have a warning sound set for just those.
