Sub $200 Mobile Phone

So I have a powerful tablet for gaming and watching YouTube videos etc and misty things like Ozbargain but it is wireless only (bad foresight) so I need a device to make and receive calls and communicate and be powerful enough to use some food delivery apps and message and food apps etc like eat now/dominos/kfc express app and order food online through a browser.

It will also be good if it could handle Facebook and some messenger apps in the background basically most things I need while mobile.

I have a mobile plan already with vaya just need a phone as my old Samsung galaxy young does not cut it.

Big screen is a plus. Was looking at a mi max for the big screen and decent ram.

The sub $200 is just too encourage better deals but I can probably go up to $300 or $400 but nothing too premium.

What's a good bang for buck device these days?

Our what are you using that you swear by.

I have had the redmi 4 prime for about 3 weeks now. All I can say is I'm amazed at the value. I get around 2 to 3 days usage on a single charge. Runs all the social media apps (facebook, Instagram, snapchat) fine and I also use for clash of clans. Also great having a 5' screen and being able to handle it in one hand. I wouldn't have minded getting the snapdragon 625 variant of the redmi note 4, but i'm glad I opted for the redmi.

    • How much did you get it for?

  • Can you tether your tablet to the mobile?

    Solid Mi Max Video Review

    • For the data? Or for calls?

I wouldn't want to tether up my tablet for data as my 1gb monthly data would eat up very fast.

My tablet is not 4g capable I.e no SIM slot but if I can take calls somehow from my mobile on my tablet that might work for now

      • For the data as you could use the phone for calls.

I wasn't aware of your data allowance was that low but given you would use the phone (and it's associated data allowance) to:

        • Facebook and some messenger apps
        • some food delivery apps and message and food apps etc like eat now/dominos/kfc express app and order food online through a browser.

this still seems like an option … i.e. Enable WiFi hotspot on your phone and connect via your tablet. Just means you'd need to carry both.

        • Oh sorry the data usage will all be mainly done from home WiFi with maybe only very minor Google searching for maybe finding venues or phone numbers on the go on the road.

I only asked for the app compatibility in case it makes thing easier but I guess I forgot to mention I pretty much have a tablet to handle all of those I just wanted maybe the lowest option in case say a deal needed an app to function and my tablet wasn't really feasible to bring along for the journey.

  • Mi Max is pretty good.

  • Moto G3 or G4, slowly dropping in prices and not too bad phones in my opinion

  • As someone who actually owns the Mi-Max

    1. On Telstra 4G in Brisbane CBD I clocked 156mbit Down / 52 Mbit up
    2. Battery Lasts 1-2 days easy
    3. Excellent Full HD IPS Screen
    4. Custom ROMS, easy to root, easy to mod
    5. Decent fingerprint reader
    6. Good Camera for Day, Poor at night (meh for pricepoint)
    7. Good quality speaker / loud enoughtat this price point is excellent
No Band 28 but its not a huge issue
You can unlock more bands as needed
      32GB Storage
      3GB ram
      Snapdragon 650
Dual 4G Sim Slots + SD Card (with adapter mod)

I would strongly recommend custom roms, although MIUI is okay I found it better on android N

    • How much did you pay for it and from where?

    • This looks to be the current winner unless I can get a good deal for a mi max
