I was almost going to post this, put it seems the app is fairly USA-centric. I mean sure, try it out since its free, but it won't be replacing Weatherzone / BoM apps for me.

    • +14

Yep, if it doesn't use BoM data, then it's not very accurate. I don't care how gorgeous the animated wallpapers are.

      • Just downloaded it, it has a flood weather warning from BOM prompt on my lock screen for a 'nearby area'. So seems to be feeding some stuff from BOM.

Try out Fish Ranger - www.fishranger.com.au and its on the Google Play store for free.
Its a new weather site built for Fishermen but only because fishermen have a need for the most accurate and uncompromising weather data. It uses BoM's best forecast models (ADFD) as opposed to BoM's second tier products (ACCESS, AUSWAVE) and it shows it all in easy to read charts with live reading overlays. And its the only app I've ever seen that clearly shows when rain is coming and shows total cloud cover in the sky over the course of a day.

        • Fishranger seems ok but not much chop if you live inland. For example in South Australia, if you live in the Riverland or further north of the state, there's no option to select these areas.

        • @khrome: Yes, most locations to date are listed around the coast however you can request new locations anywhere -inland or on the coast - and they will typically add them in a couple days. The Locations page has a 'Request New Location' button.

I thought the same thing. But then I thought, it's free, I'll let the user decide if they like it or find it useful.

I personally use Weatherzone but apparently BOM have their own official app now:

      https://play.google.com/store/apps/details?id=au.gov.bom.met…

      • +1

but that bom doesnt have widget, right?

        • True. Weatherzone for that. Else BOM.

        • +6

@Gaggy: I'm a PocketWeather fan for the widgets.

        • @mattyman: Link please. I cannot see widget in pocket weather Australia site. I use google inbuild widget and it sucks. BOM app is amazing but lacks widget.

        • If you want a widget, Pocketweather is the best.

        • +2

@Bluering48: I recommend Au Weather. It uses BoM data and allows you to access all of it and the widget has a pleasing transparent background.

Au Weather comes in ad supported free and paid versions.

    • I use the elders weather website as it has far more local weatherstations by suburb and more accurate. Not saying BoM isnt accurate.

      • +1

Elders is just Weatherzone re-badged. Uses combination of weatherzone & Bom forecasts and BOM observations.

        • +1

Wow, today I learned. Thanks mate.

Lack of BoM data is always a compromise in accuracy. Also I am struggling to find an Android weather app which has BoM + current UV reading (not maximum forecasted) in the widget.

Weather Australia used to be the best one but the developer discontinued the application due to BoM data access arrangements changing.

Try Pocket Weather Australia. Has info from BOM, current UV readings and is made in Australia. Looks pretty damn fine too.

      • That's what I'm using at the moment. Are you sure that the widget shows current UV reading? Mine always shows max.

        • Yeah you're right…it does show max UV. I don't use the widget with the UV reading so was just looking at that function once the app was opened. Maybe you can ask the dev to change it.

          @khrome:

Already did a while ago. Maybe not enough people have interest in it.

        • True. Oh well, you can but try.

      • Another Pocket Weather user here.

    • Try out Fish Ranger. See my post below.

  • I am using the weather channel and I like it

  • I can't find the widgets…

    • Oh nova launcher didn't like it…

  • How do these compare to accuweather?

    • main issue with accuweather is that its american based and doesnt use BOM or WZ data. I've seen some pretty inaccurate forecasts and observations as a result.

Been using Weatherzone, hasn't missed a beat.

  • I have been using Pocket Weather Australia for many years but this one only works in Australia. So whenever I go overseas I need to use another weather app. Might download this one and try it out for when I go overseas.

    • Talking about overseas, just try BeWeather & Widgets Pro, the best. There is also Weather+

  • willy weather is what i use

    • +2

I've found it only works for weather below the equator

    • For when the atmosphere is HOT.

  • Best reason to get this is for SMART TVs! Has a Very Nice look on the TV! *8vD

    • On a Chromecast?
      Or
      Android tv?

I use BOM web page bookmark with the shortcut on my home screen. its really awesome

    • Me too.
Love the mobile version of the bom site.
I like the icon as well.

      Don't like their app.

    • An app like Weatherzone is far better IMO. Same data but has a graph for the next 48 hours with curves for chance of rain and temperature. For example, You can see at a glance that temperature will peak at 4pm, then drop off sharply, and the rain will hit somewhere between 5 and 6pm (or that chance of rain will exceed 50-60% which is good indication, can check the BoM Local Radar in the app for more confirmation). Far more useful than BoM website.

  • This widget does not show a forecast like Weatherzone+.

    But it's free so …

Thanks OP! Just installed it and surprised that it added a decent watch face on my Huawei Watch.

I use the Google Weather apo, mostly because I like the cartoons of the frog. Does this have a frog?

  • I can't see an option to view the local bom radar…… Uninstalling.

  • Looks okay. I use Fish Ranger (www.fishranger.com.au) which is free. It's supposed to be the most accurate weather site around and I've done some research and it seems to be true - based on the data they use. UV is also included for those wanting it. Supposed to be for fishermen (hence the name) but I use it for everyday. Free App is available and looks good/easy to use too.

  • excellent thanks OP

  • Great timing, thanks. Will be in the US next week
