Melbourne over the Easter long weekend.

In Melbourne over the long weekend and looking for suggestions on things to do over this time. It's my first time here and just trying to maximise the sites and food experiences.
I'm very open minded so not set on anything in particular.

Just looking for any suggestions on where to eat/shop/see.

I have a car so thought about driving to Philip island and maybe the 12 Apostles, any thoughts ?

Thanks for any help

You can come over to my place, and relax with me
Quick question, are you comfortable being on your hands and knees for extended periods of time? My footstool recently broke, so..

If you like croissants then Lune in Rose St, Fitzroy is fantastic. They will be open from 8:00 everyday for the long weekend. We went at roughly 9:45 this morning and the queue wasn't too bad. Sometimes it is out the door and round the corner. Worth wandering past to have a look and see what you think - if the queue is too long continue along Rose St to Grace Cafe.
Around the corner in Brunswick St there is a really good African place called Nyalla - it is BYO so the price isn't too outrageous. They have a good set of shared vegetarian and meat "taster" dishes. You might want to ring and confirm they are open and probably book.
Have a look at La Niche in Smith St it does a fantastic Boef Bourguignon and frites.
Look at the Promotix site for tickets as the Comedy Festival is on. Unfortunately you just missed the Food and Wine festival.
I love the walk from Fitzroy gardens, past the MCG, across the Yarra and then across to the Botanical gardens. Just check the path as one of the bridges is out at the moment.

If you can get a copy of The Age there should be an Entertainment Guide.

Have a great time in Melbourne and welcome.

  • One day do city stuff - Melbourne central shops / the street with the myer windows , Eureka tower ,queen vic market ,lanewyas , A football game if you want and the 2hr free walking tour .

Philip island and 12 apostles like 2/3 hours and opposite ways from Melbourne so pick one - nobbies and pyramid rock are pretty good to look at near philip island and it there feels like more to do there - 3 park pass , see the penguines , chocolate factory , mini golf . 12 apostles is good if you want to drive great ocean road - will probably be packed this weekend and visit parks otherwise you go through colac which is a nice town but everything outside it is like farmland .

You can get bus day tours from half tix. Half price. Pay in cash only. That way you relax, get commentary, look at scenery from coach window. Better than watching road while driving.

Can get afternoon half day Melbourne to Dandenong tour if purchase in morning. Found it interesting and I live here. Must buy day tours on day prior. ( two days if holiday in between. ) May only take cash.

Day tour to Grampian long trip but have morning tea at Ballarat animal cafe and great views in Grampians. If time used to stop at Aboriginal keeping place, (modern museum), dinner in regional town, Horsham?, and get back about 9 p.m. Spectacular views, lots of steps to see amazing waterfalls, escarpments.

Also trip to Sovereign Hill and Gold museum in Ballarat are most interesting and closer to Melbourne.

Afternoon trip to Phillip Island and evening penguin parade. Need to rug up as wind off ocean is very, very cold!

  • I'm free on the weekend! ;D

Also Phillip Island isn't really worth the drive. Drive along the beach towards Lorne, great views. I'm considering going camping somewhere that way tomorrow.

Lygon St and Sydney Rd for good food and cafes.

St Kilda beach is where you'll find all the tourists

  • Yarra Valley is great if you like wine tasting.
Mornington Peninsula is good too, quaint little townships, e.g Red Hill, Sorrento, Point Nepean etc.
Check out the cliff walk on the south side of Mornington Peninsula near Sorrento, which is adjacent to Bass Straits.
