What measures should I take for Paypal transaction before releasing goods?

The buyer has made payment via Paypal but they didn't specify address.

Under the transaction details, Paypal saying that there is no seller protection and I should be careful of this transaction.

Buyer is going to pick up item. Apart from getting his declaration that he picked up item and capturing his ID number on the same declaration page, what else I could do to prevent fraud e.g. the buyer could later say they didn't pick up item or they didn't authorise this transaction. I am also thinking of taking picture of car rego.

Thank you

    reject payment via paypal

if they are collecting, get payment by cash

Get photo of their drivers license and make sure the name on the license matches the name on the PayPal account.

    • I will match and make notes of details but not sure whether the buyer will let me take picture.

    or cash…………….

    might have said that already

If you can't provide a tracking number to Paypal then be prepare to lose your money.

    • Buyer will be signing a declaration that he has picked up item. His full name and address(which I received via text) is available on declaration.

I will match his full name and address against drivers licence and I also have section at bottom of this declaration to capture ID number.

How Paypal can then honour it in favour of buyer if they try to play dodgy?

Paypal dispute process is automated with strict rules. No tracking number = you lose.

        • Papal won't accept the declaration if he does a chargeback. He should pay cash if he picks up.

Refund his PayPal payment and accept cash only - it's the only way to guarantee that you won't have to deal with any rubbish later on.

As above - there's no advantage I believe to receiving money by PayPal for a pickup. Not only will you not be protected, you'll have to pay PayPal fees as well?

Pretty sure the declaration means nothing to PayPal. Same with picture of car etc etc.

Refund PayPal and accept cash only.

  • Thanks everyone for your input so far.

A lot of people pay Good Guys or similar retailer using Paypal and then pick up their item. How those transactions are different to mine?

    • Transactions with basically be the same, except they would presumably have more resources and a fraud write off budget.

The large retailers may have negotiated their own deal with PayPal, but in general, buyers do not have PayPal "item not received" protection for pick-up items.

      PayPal Buyer Protection Policy:

      Item not received
S10.2 Any item you collect in person or arrange to be collected on your behalf is not eligible to be claimed as not received.

For eBay 'Click and collect" there is a trustworthy record of the buyer choosing to pick-up the item.

I think paypal would take a different approach with someone saying good guys didn't send the product knowing good guys is a multi million dollar company.

Why do these questions need to be constantly answered?
Pick up is always cash only

    • +1

      this,

there are endless stories of paypal refunds after collection of goods

      why take the risk

cancel paypal, cash on collection = ZERO risk of $$ issues

Follow the purchaser home stealthily after they get the goods.
    Anything happens…BAM bikies

  • Did you listen to the advice?…. some good ones here

  • Like others said, cash only. Buyers scamming sellers really annoys me.

  • You asked, and Advices have been given. Many. Now, Good luck and xxx bless you.

  • What if he withdraws the money from PayPal first before handing over the item. If the buyer claims non-receipt then it is just his word against the sellers.

    • +3

Assuming op is a new seller, the funds will most likely be on hold for a few weeks.

Even if he did withdraw, buyer can still open a dispute and if op loses, his PayPal account will be in the negatives and will be restricted. Paypal may even get debt collectors involved if op refuses to pay.

  • Generally if less than $100 you can just check if to see if match name and address and of course see photo. Capturing I'd as record I don't think it's necessary. For more expensive item you should just accept cash.

  • +1 for cash, however if for some reason this can't be done, a PayPal gift is an option. Once the money is in your account the only way they can get it back is via a credit card charge back. The other option is a well written PayPal invoice, this will give the seller maximum protection. Obviously cash is always the best but its good to know your options just in case.
