Looking for NBN ISP- but the BIG question is...

Okay, our area has just got NBN and I'm looking for an ISP. Using websites like etc it's easy to get the basic information you need like price, data limits, expected speed etc.

However, what's not easy to find is whether the ISP has purchased enough bandwidth from NBN to reliably and consistently support the maximum speed for the plan that you are purchasing. Nobody wants to subscribe to a plan of say 100 Mb per second where the ISP struggles to provide the speed because of lack of purchased bandwidth by them. Let's assume for the sake of this question that my connection CAN support 100 Mb per second. Of course if I ask them they will always say that they will be able to provide the speed even when some can't. Probably the Telstras and Optuss out there can, but what about the scores of others?

Any advice out there?

  • I believe going onto whirlpool forums would help you, from what I've read is that Aussie broadband seems to be one of the best. This may have changed though as I have not visited the site for awhile.

Aussie broadband does appear to offer a convincing case as they provide a lot of above average technical detail and have a lot of their own infrastructure. Thanks for the pointer.

It's OK, you will never need or want more than 12Mbit.

Please don't vote this idiot in next time.

    • I have up to 96mbps and that's still not enough for the whole house.three video streams and me gaming = lagville population? The whole of Australia.

The general rule is that if a company offers unmetered plans, their performance is going to be garbage during peak times.
    Sign up with SkyMesh.

  • telstra

  • I did some research before signing up, mostly in Whirlpool and NBN comparison websites.
I decided on SkyNet..I mean SkyMesh, but they don't support my area. So I signed up with Internode, SA based (good for you?), great customer support and cheaper than Telstra (100/40 plan). Sometimes speed throttles down to 60, but average around 86. Mine is FTTP.

    • Not sure that Internode are SA based anymore (since TPG own them now).
And if they still are, for how much longer?

I'm with Aussie Broadband and experience has been good (but there are plenty of whiners on Whirlpool), Nuskope are more expensive and highly regarded (and are definitely SA based), SkyMesh have long had a good reputation. Otherwise Telstra are surprisingly compoetitive.
Steer clear of Optus, all sorts of nightmare stories with them.
TPG seem to be hit or miss.

Forget the rest at this stage.

As above. If the company offers Unlimited, your chances of high contention increase dramatically.

Per my usage, my 500Gb plan with Aussie Broadband is essentially Unlimited anyway.
