My Recent Telstra NBN Negotiations

Hi all,

I wanted to share with you my recent NBN negotiations. I feel I now have a pretty good idea of what is the most they can offer for someone with similar needs as I.

A little introduction:
I have been a happy customer with this plan for years (two years ago they upgraded the data limit to 500GB) https://www.ozbargain.com.au/node/55820. I am now moving house, to an area where NBN(HFC) is ready.
I wanted a similar plan, and was told I will not get my current cable plan without re-contracting for another 24 months (with no new modem either!).

Over the last 6 weeks, I have contacted (on multiple occasions) Telstra via webchat, moving team, NBN moving team, NBN sales team, disconnection team, loyalty team and telstra shop to get the best deal.
What I wanted was $80 per month, 500GB data, 100/40 speed, local+national calls and a modem upgrade (gateway max 2 or frontier) thrown in.

What I found:
Telstra shop - don't bother, they could not even offer discounted speed boost.
Webchat - they have no authority to cut deals, they walk you through signing up yourself online.
Moving team - told me i need to chat to NBN moving team.
NBN moving team - very little authority.
NBN sales team - multiple calls, most off shore centres. All the reps that had aussie accent could/would not offer me anything other than the recommend retail price. A girl from a Philippines call centre offered me pretty much all I wanted except the modem upgrade - did not take it up at the time.
Disconnection team - had some authority with cable plan (non NBN), offered me what I have now but need to re-contract with no real benefit.
Disconnection team attempt 2 - said they could not help me and tried to transfer me to the NBN move team. Somehow I got transferred to someone from the loyalty team.
Loyalty team - Onshore call centre, girl/lady seemed to be able to make stuff happen. Said to me straight up the best I can get is what the rep from Philippines offered me. She transferred me to a member from the NBN moves team, and this person also made things happen - I ended up getting the Frontier modem for the introductory price which was stopped a month ago.

Now, I am happy with the plan that I got. Happy because I know I got the best deal that I can pull off.
$80 per month, 500GB data, 100/40 speed, local+national calls and a modem upgrade frontier for $216.

I hope this may help some of you with your negotiations with Telstra. It is really a bit hit and miss with who you get. You need to get transferred to the loyalty team - which is DIFFERENT to the disconnection team.

Maybe I'm mistaken but aren't Telstra offering 2TB for $90 now in NBN areas?

My experience with any overseas Telstra reps is they lie about everything every second sentence. And then fail to give you what they agreed to in any case. They're utterly shitful.

    • Not sure about that deal, could not find it online just now. I guess with all NBN plans it is more about the speed than the data limit. I could not use more than 500GB a month myself.

Can't comment on whether they lied, they documented the offer at the time and later I got it from the loyalty team member/NBN move team member.

  • I'm with optus and soon to move over to nbn should of been installed over a month ago
From 90 cable bundle to nbn bundle 95

      Unlimited nbn 100/40

Good luck with getting that with Optus NBN over cable. The last few nights, I've been getting as little as 0.5!

      Free modem plus installation

That's self installation of the modem, NBN installation is is free for almost everyone

    • Are you referring to $95 after $20 discount with combined phone plan? Which plan are you referring to here?

  • Is it not a buyers market with about 20 companies offering plans?

We get so badly ripped off in this country. In the UK Virgin fibre would give you 3 times faster speed, free TV, a free modem all for about half of what you pay.

    $80 Unlimited 100/40 with TPG
I would burn through 500Gb in under a week.

    • How do you use so much? I need ideas please.

  • Thanks good tips. Really hard sometimes to get onto the onshore guys. Not that the offshore team cannot help either

  • Plenty of other RSP's out there besides Telstra and given that the main congestion points seem to be with the NBN itself and not a CVC problem (as NBN would have you believe)then there's no good reason I can see to stick with Telstra. Last I heard you can't even use your own VOIP hardware on their network. If you don't want to deal with offshore call centres then try Skymesh, Aussie Broadband (who is busy rolling it's own backbone) or Telecube who all offer decent deals. The CVC costs from NBNco will be going down in June but there seems to be some confusion over who it will actually benefit, but that is the reason that our broadband costs are pretty high as compared to everywhere else.

    • After some research I was really keen for skymesh, called them up. They can no longer do custom plans, can only match other internet only deals. They were going to charge me 79.90 for 120 GB peak data with no home phone and need to purchase own router.

      • I signed my daughter up for Skymesh, took them a week to get back to me on a plan match, then there is about a month wait for NBN to install (HFC).

I got a couple of emails from Skymesh straight after signing up, basically saying that any delays or stuff-ups would most likely be NBN's fault, not theirs. Interesting.

My daughter's NBN installation is due tomorrow, but Skymesh forgot to send out the router I'd paid for (they blamed "human error"), so now it probably won't turn up in time.

I've had to call Skymesh a couple of times, and each time there's at least half an hour on hold before I get to talk to someone.

At this point, from my experience, Skymesh do not deserve the reputation they seem to have.

        • Ouch, I had heard they had a good reputation? Haven't used them myself but I did recently go with Telecube on their Whirlpool deal. No problems (apart from NBN tower congestion which I had with the last RSP as well. )

        • I also had to wait 30 minutes, but that was when Brisbane was flooded.

  • Will probably make up for the 6-8 weeks it takes a technician to actually show up on a scheduled appointment

  • Anyone had any experience with Foxtel negotiations?

  • Actually you want the Seamless Migration team. I'm on the same old $78 ultimate cable plan as you. Contacted Telstra once ages ago, no deal, did nothing as my building has FTTB with TPG well reviewed with unlimited super fast @$59. Thought I'd just move to TPG. Last week Telstra contacted me, and told me I can be transferred to NBN for exactly the same deal ($78/month 500GB super fast), no contract, free replacement modem. I've never had calls with Telstra, I use MyNetFone VoIP which I will continue to use. I guess the difference is I'm not moving, and they want to disconnect the old service now.

    • Wow that is awesome! I wonder if there is a reliable way to get onto that team. Would benefit others in this situation.

      • If you're on a good cable plan, and NBN has come to your area… do nothing! They will contact you ;)

  • excellent post!

im a current iinet adsl customer and looking to move to telstra cable.

interested in the 500gb M plan and have seen multiple people on whirlpool, etc who have managed to get it for $80 with free speedboost and additional data (anywhere from 300-500gb extra). happy to sign for 24 months.

any idea what's the best team i should ask to be put through to?

I've had piss all luck with online chat and in store reps, although haven't as yet called through.

    • As you are not currently a Telstra customer, my advice would be call nbn sales team multiple times, just straight up ask what you want. Call at various hours of the day. Good luck!

      • Great.

        Will try tomorrow.

      • So an update on my Telstra cable efforts.. no luck!!

Got offered the gateway modem for free if I signed up to the $90pm M bundle but still had to pay activation and speedboost.

I said thanks but no thanks.

I really just want the $80 500gb plan with free speedboost and activation fee. Happy to commit for 24 months. I can pick up a modem for $20 on gumtree/eBay.

Any Telstra people out there willing to help an Ozbargainer?

        • Bummer, it took me about 2 weeks of calling daily to get the offer I got, just so you know. Otherwise maybe go skymesh month to month while you keep looking, don't cave in!

        • @Souljarh: thanks mate. I don't have nbm till 2019 so cable or adsl is my only option.

        • @bkx3virgin:

hi, im in the same situation as you and was wondering how did you end up going with telstra? did you get a deal in the end?
im trying to find the best way to hit them up

  • What a joke this NBN has become. After TIO my isp told me they couldn't do stable 100mbps so now I'm in the 50 which is so slow. Especially woth newer games that are about 70gb. It takes hours. We should of had gigabit to every house and select from 100 250 1000 etc.. not this crappy max 100mbps that doesn't even work. I was more happier with cable and was getting over 90mbps stable. Though the uploads sucked. Again now to get respectable uploads we need the 100mbps plan that doesn't work and is pricy. NBN was suppose to be our next gen future network and now they say it's purpose built. BS - Not fit for my purposes. Just run fiber to every home and be done with it and what's this 100mbps crap it should be gigabit.
