Eurogamer Sources: Nintendo to launch SNES mini this year

The SNES mini (or, to continue Nintendo's official branding, likely the Nintendo Classic Mini: Super Nintendo Entertainment System) is currently scheduled to launch in time for Christmas this year. Development of the device is already under way, our sources have indicated.

This seemed all but guaranteed after they stopped production on the NES Mini. Hopefully it's just as moddable as its predecessor, and the controller cords are longer than a child's arm.

Now this is something I can get into.

Will Nintendo be able to meet the demand?
I reckon it will be higher for a mini SNES.

    • No they'll purposefully set about not making enough like they do with every product they launch and then they explain that it was because the components were extremely rare or some other BS like they just did with the last thing.

People keep making that argument, as if Nintendo nefariously planned to understock a popular and profitable product. No company seeking to make a profit for shareholders would do that.

The reality, found in the very same eurogamer article OP linked, is the product was a niche release expected to only be popular as a Christmas impulse buy. They were not expecting such huge demand, and were left playing catch-up and under supplying the market.

Hopefully they've learnt their lesson and the SNES Mini will have a much larger production run.

    • I would assume that Switch production takes priority (especially with how they're selling in the states) so it's likely to be even more of an issue than with the NES Mini.
Then again, with how successful the NES Mini is, they may be willing to put more money into production to pump more out.

Only time will tell. Nintendo has had trouble with getting enough parts in the past, or using different parts in consoles than usual (likely due to supply issues, but I'm not certain). A perfect example of this is every 3DS model with TN and IPS screens.
If you don't know what they are, IPS looks the same from every angle, so it's good if people are watching you play, or on your TV so you can watch it from an angle.
      TN doesn't have that advantage.

Nintendo wasn't advertising whether a console was TN or IPS and the only way to find out was by turning it on. They sold for the same price as well, upsetting some people.

Sorry about that, got a bit sidetracked and went off on a rant there.

Hopefully there won't be supply issues, but if it comes to it, the Switch is the first priority and I think Nintendo will treat it as such and slow/stop production on the SNES Mini if it is required to keep up the number of Switch consoles rolling out to stores.

The sales of the Switch might slow down, especially with Sony and Microsoft competing at the end of the year, but they may also need to ramp up production more than they are now to supply enough for the holidays at the end of the year.

hopefully the game is expandable than the built in games (30 ??)

  • It should be so obvious that Nintendo could live off nostalgia fumes alone. And maybe one day they will. Kids who grew up with Nintendo are adults now, ready to relive their past. SNES should be far more popular than NES. Sales would probably go through the roof if the software licensing agreements to most of the IP were settled so games could be sold online and then stored on SD cards inside the unit. But that is probably dreaming…

  • Sounds nice, but SNES had more third party hits on this console which probably won't feature on this device.

Why not just release a Nintendo classics compilation on their current device instead of drip feeding the games at $10+ a pop.

Not sure if I want a bunch of "classic" consoles crowding the TV.

  • Would be great if the SNES mini was a 2in1 (SNES + NES)

  • Hopefully the controllers are wireless. Although, I will still buy the damn thing, wireless or not.

Super Metroid, Super Mario World, Zelda, Chrono Trigger

The true golden age of 2d gaming.

Whilst on the topic, why has nintendo not created a true 2D sequal for super metroid! Don't get me wrong, I loved the Prime games on GC & Wii but 2d classic metroid will always be the best.

    • Probably just be the same Club Nintendo SNES controller
