Need advice on monitor purchase (1440p 27")

Recently I've been shopping around for a new monitor, as I think my current one is due for an upgrade (LG 21.5" 1080p, had it about 4 years now). Preferably a 27", 1440p display that's capable of 96Hz, with a $450AUD budget, less would be better.

Research lead me to looking into Korean monitors, which seemed to be fairly popular choice years back for being good cheap 27" 1440p panels capable of overclocking (mainly seeing Crossover, X-Star and QNIX mentioned a lot) but the more popular ones like the QNIX QX2710 and Crossover 2795 look to be discontinued.

Looking on eBay, I came across this one:

Seems promising, but it's about $430AUD after conversion rate (with C5AUS code, might be less with Citibank debit card but still waiting for money to transfer to mine). Does anyone have any input on whether this would be worthwhile at that price? Overclocking isn't a huge concern for me, but 96Hz would be nice (using GTX970 currently and can't really push frames much higher) and it looks nice too. Only issue is chance of dead pixels, but I'd assume this one would have less than 3 like they claim in the description.

The other options I've seen are the Kogan 27" Cinema Display which is currently on presale, $329AUD + shipping but I'm not sure if it'd be better than the QNIX or not.

Lastly I also have the option at a second hand Crossover 2795 from eBay, which the seller claims to be pixel perfect with no dead/stuck pixels at all and only used for a month, but would cost $300 shipped. I do hear however that it's the best version of the QX2710/related monitors, as it doesn't use PWM dimming.

For any of these, I understand I'd probably need to replace the stand with a VESA solution, which is fine.

Otherwise, anyone have recommendations for perhaps locally available monitors that suit my preference at that price? I haven't really looked at monitors a lot before.

Cheers.

  • Why 96hz?

    • Because it's a middle group between 60 and 120/144, and I'd like to run higher than 60 if possible (96Hz seems to be the sweet spot for overclockable Korean panels).

  • Typing this on a QX2710LED which I bought second-hand for not much money. Recommend that as an option, since you get to check for dead pixels before buying.

  • I have a Crossover 2795QHD and I don't regret buying it at all. Overclocked to 96Hz stable and I would recommend it to other people.
