Help with Dismantling Laptop - Where to Buy The Tools?

Hi everyone, my laptop died and I need to recover my data before sending it off for repair. I've gone through the manufacturer booklet and I'll need the following removed according to page 28-33 of http://h10032.www1.hp.com/ctg/Manual/c04807803:

Bottom cover – Torx5 T5M2.0×8.0 screws
- six Torx5 T5M2.0×3.9 screws
Battery – PM2.0×4.0 screws.
Actual drive – PM2.0×2.9 screw

Does anyone know where I can get a cheap tool set that will let me undo all the different screws? It's as though they purposely use different screws to make it difficult to dismantle!

Thanks!

Just use a regular screw driver. You should be able to unscrew the torx5 with a flat head screwdriver, unless the screws are really tight.

      Terrible advice!

Look, obviously I know that using the proper screwdriver is the best option.
However, I am assuming that the OP just want to get the job done ASAP so that he can send his laptop in for repair.
For a one time quick fix, just use a flat head screw, or borrow a proper set from the neighbour.
There isn't a point buying a new set of screwdrivers just to use it ONCE.

        • I have to second what @Diji1 said. Terrible advice!

        • Agree, you can do it with a flat head easy.

        Not really
Can be done and causes no issues
Have you actually pulled apart a laptop or just another nonsensical post from yourself

Jaycar sells them. More expensive than from chinese sites but they may be of a higher quality,

    • The man got a set that allows him to get into Mac Book and iPhone/iPad devices. Worked well, he managed to resurrect the MacBook.

  • Ph2 you mean?

No idea what a PM is, but most computers and hard drive mounts use a standard Phillips head +

I have this set and it is perfect for most jobs. Only thing it won't do is reach deep set screws, but shouldn't be an issue to a laptop.

    • thanks heaps, I think this will be a handy kit to have for the future too. Now to find a bunnings that has it!

Many overseas places sell decent sets, but you do not want to wait 2-3 weeks. Bunnings, Jaycar, Mitre 10, etc. Also, depending on your location, places like for example this one are good: https://sydneytools.com.au DO NOT frustrate yourself by butchering screws using unsuitable tools! See it as investment: a good set of screwdrivers used only ocassionaly will last forever and cost you $10-$20.

    • that's good advice. I agree with buying something once and not have to deal with it again. Hopefully the Trojan set will be good enough?

I have a few inexpensive Trojan tools, and they are all performing better than I expected. The Trojan kit looks like really good bargain, and exactly what you need + more (no, I do not work for Bunnings!). The box even says: "lifetime warranty" - keep your docket!

This set should be appropriate. Member altomic has posted it several times and they are rather good quality for the price. Get a set for next time.

This is the king of tool sets: has every tool you will ever need and more and will open any consumer device!! Ok, a bit more than $9.99 but you will never have to buy anything again!!

ifixit also have smaller (cheaper) Toolkits also which should do your job! Good luck!

    • wow that looks awesome, I'll save getting it for when I have time to play with electronics!

      • I have a very similar, large iFixit tools kit (last Christmas present!). Expensive, but top of the range, lifetime investment even if you use them a lot. Pleasure to work with :)

    • Oooh, me wanty.

Thank you everyone, I got the Trojan set at my local bunnings. Really appreciate everyone's input.

    • I have that one too. Standing in the Miniso in Chatswood and they have a 31 and 37 piece set for $4 and $6 respectively :(

Almost bought one, but probably don't need it.

  • eBay if you are willing to wait.
