What's a good credit card to sign up for right now?

Any good deals going on at the moment?
Gonna have to spend a decent amount soon so might as well get something out of it.

Preferably with:

  • bonus promotion for easy points
  • spend money, earn points
  • no annual fee would be nice

Assuming you are happy with Qantas points, the ANZ Frequent Flyer black is good at the moment. $0 annual fee for the first year and bonus 75,000 Qantas points if you reach the minimum spend.

    • Agree with this. Might also add that the min spend is $2,500 - not sure how much OP is looking to spend?

    • Damn that was looking good until the flight requirement.

The clause in the terms which says "Book & travel on a new return flight by 30/09/2017" only refers to the 75 bonus status credits. You are still eligible for the 75,000 bonus points even if you do not book a return flight. This is a great card for the bonus points and spending $2500 in 3 months should be relatively easy.

        • Oh damn, I thought it meant the whole set of bonus points. Thanks for clarifying that

For something with no annual fees, with some interesting bonuses:

    • Amex Velocity Escape Card
Get 7500 Velocity Points when you spend $750 within the first 3 months.
2 Velocity Points per dollar spent.

    • Amex Essential Card
Get $50 credit when you spend $750 within 3 months.
1 Membership Reward per dollar spent.

    • Citi Simplicity Card
Up to $50 cash back - you'll earn 5% cash back on all retail purchases (up to $1,000 spend) in the first 90 days.

Some cards with reduced fees for the first year

    • Citi Signature Credit Card
75,000 bonus Citi Reward Points on your first spend within 90 days.
Reduced annual fee of $199 in the first year (usually $395 per year)

    • Macquarie Black
60,000 Macquarie Reward points* when you spend $3,000 within 60 days of approval.
$99 first year primary cardholder annual fee then $249 ongoing

None are AMAZING deals, but if you need a card to shop on, these are some good choices.

Depends if your big spending allows Amex or not. I would say the Amex Edge (currently free for the first year) or Coles Rewards ($89 fee - you may be able to get a voucher to offset the first year by phone discussion upon sign up).

I've grabbed quite a few cards lately, usually via first annual fee waiver offers to gain free bonus points. But I'm going to go back to Coles Rewards as soon as I get my act together. The Edge points are excellent but I find too many places I shop at do not accept it. Plus Coles has the superior price/merchandise protection and no transaction/forex fees.

See my table for comparisons: https://www.ozbargain.com.au/comment/4383266

    • Thanks, I'll have to take some time to absorb that table. It looks intense.

I noticed that the comment is part of the NAB rewards 80k points post. Is there a reason you don't recommend that card?

The startup points are great. I'd get it simply for that and then get another card for long term use or major spend.

For a non Amex card, the Coles may work out better point wise even after the $89 fee. See that top row showing an example of points after $28k spend on the card.

  • Someone above mentioned Amex Essential provides $50 application bonus. That is for applying directly; via referral link it is $75. Although free, it provides quite an impressive array of benefits. More details can be found here if interested.
