So what is it that the Fenix 5X, i.e., the mapping variant gets?

      Topographical maps preloaded
Display current position on a map – useful”
So basically a map on your wrist, but… so what? What does that mean I can do?

      Automated running/cycling routes
Turn-by-turn navigation based on GPX/Fit file. If you are an explorer etc, I can see this being a useful function. I cant see this being any different to the Edge GPS routing approach though
POI lookup near your location – WHERE IS THE NEAREST LOO!!!

      • VO2 Max estimate,

Laughable the garbage people will swallow if it's attached to a computer. You may as well just take a guess yourself.

        • Why guess it myself if I can get a $800 (after discount) gadget to do it for me

You can get the Garmin Connect app from the App Store. IMHO it's pretty good.

      • +1

Garmin connect has come a long way in the last 12 months.

I really like the current version.

Pricey. Is it because it is reincarnated in a Protos dragoon body?

    • Pricey because it is not cheap.

OP will this beam me up to the Enterprise?

  • +1

Just got the Fenix 5 $639 delivered. Time to sell the 235.
Wonder if as a HPE teacher this could be a tax deduction ? As far as I know we can only claim stop watch only watches. Not multi function …. but a friend who works in the mines suggested to me that he can claim watches for work … ?

    • How does the Fenix 5 compare to the 235? Apart from looks, is there any real need to upgrade?

      • The Fenix 5 is a multisport range. The 235 is running and cycling (can be coerced to do more).

The 735XT is physically very similar to the 235, but is a multisport watch and functionally similar to the Fenix range.

      • the 235 doesn't normally log swimming so I wanted something for that too. In saying that 90% of my activity is running/riding so I didn't really need to it was just a nice price … The extra data will be fun.

    • Where did you get the Fenix 5 for $639 delivered?
      edit: the ebay shop lol

      • From this ozbargains deal! 798.85-20% = $639.08

        • This deal is for the 5X - I can't see a 5 deal anywhere for 798.85….

        • @digitalane: Ryda did have all models. Obviously they're all sold out now.

  • Good post, thanks OP. Very tempted but think I'm going to hold out for the Forerunner 935 as same features but a bit slimmer and lighter.

  • Wut!? $#!%&@?

  • Jeez !!

  • I am posting this so that more people will buy it and when it sits unused, there will be a flood of it on gumtree.

I love the Fenix series. They have great battery life. Track skiing very accurately as well.
I have an EPIX, it is the first watch model that displays maps. However I do not find it very hand to use. If you need to know where you are along a trail, its good. For navigation use, I find it a little cumbersome. However the software on the Fenix 5 might be better than EPIX.

In any case, dont depend on this to save your life.
A handheld GPS is better. a proper map is best.

  • i have a small wrist. how is the 5s and 5 compared to 5x, function wise?

    • Fenix 5S: 42mm wide, smaller wrist focused – offered in regular glass and Sapphire glass
Fenix 5: 47mm wide, baseline – offered in regular glass and Sapphire glass
Fenix 5X: 51mm wide, includes mapping – only in Sapphire glass

Same functions. 5X includes maps which can be displayed on the watch. Its street map as well as topo maps

The 5S and 5 comes in normal glass and sapphire glass versions.
The sapphire glass version has wifi connectivity as well as bluetooth. The normal glass versions only has bluetooth.

With wifi, it can sync data when it accesses a wireless network. You set this up using garmin express software on your pc

      • thanks
