Just saw this in the catalogue and thought it was a decent price. Not sure what the quality of JVC TV's is, but at least it's from a local seller so warranty should be easy if anything goes wrong.

This is part of Mother's Day deals for 2017.

Almost sounds like a PC….now the million dollar question, can you use Kodi on it?

  • +4

Further 5% off with wish cards = $30 less

  • +15

    JVC smart TVs are shit!
I purchased one a few months ago and it has a cheap dodgy version of Android that has massive connectivity issues, when I can get it to connect to the internet it's very slow. YouTube for TV doesnt work, it's just the mobile app, therefore you cannot control it from your phone, all of the apps are old mobile Android apps on an outdated version of Android.

    • +2

Anyway to upgrade\hack the OS to bring it up to a newer version ?

      • +1

I haven't come across any articles on that. I think with TV's, you're stuck with what you get… unless anyone here has heard otherwise?

      • +31

So because they are new their opinion doesn't matter? He owns a JVC and his opinion is that it's crap. Everyone is allowed to have a voice here. Btw I think jvc is dodgy as well.

      • +8

Are you saying they signed up to OzB specifically to badmouth JVC TV's with no real justification? Seems a bit far fetched no?

      • +5

haha what do you think is happening here? TLC / Kogan is creating fake ozbargain accounts to trash JVC?

    • -3

      Why the negs?

    • +4

When you said JVC smart TVs are shit, did you compare it with $1000 TV or at similar $600 range?
People who can only afford low budget TV should not expect it to perform like higher end ones. It's simple really.

      • +13

For this price, I would be happy if the panel was ok. The smart functions aren't of much interest to me.

        • +1

If I get this one, I would use it for normal 4K TV function and not so much of the smart stuff. Its processor & RAM would not keep up.

        • +1

Yeh I don't care about smart tv functionality, I don't use it on my current smart tv as I have a Mi Box to take care of all that. Interested in if the actual TV picture and functionality is ok, as my parents need a new TV.

        • +1

If you want something similarly priced sans the Smart and a little more warranty (3 years) - Wonder of to Target, they have 55" UHD TVs without Smart and 3yr warranty for $599. Regular price, no need to broden it either.

      • +1

Not really, a lot of people on here with a low budget try to get a higher end TV on low-end budget hence the point of this site really.

        • +1

The point of this site is that seeking the best possible bargain for a product. Not compare a cheap apple & more expensive one. Right now, at $599 for 4K TV, can you offer a better alternative? I'm actually interested as I'm seeking one.

          @mcp2kpro:

To be fair, I'd suggest that if you're budget is a bit less, then you're better to save up and choose a better performing model. A TV is something that you're looking at all the time, so if it's crappy then you're going to prob regret getting a cheaper model. For instance if the UHD upscaling chipset is lousy and the software too then anything SD will look crap. There's also no pro-reviews of the JVC as far as I know.

          That's my 2c.

Personally I think that the Hisense M7000 50" for $800 is a better buy.

        • @Steptoe: yeah thanks, but Platinum is even worse brand.

        • +1

@Jawanzar: I know how it goes, for couple hundreds extra you can get something better. It opens many options at $800 (Sony, Samsung etc..). But this is just for my second TV in the kitchen, I dont wanna spend too much. Actually I will even look for a FHD TV instead of 4K as I won't watch 4K bluray on it. Will keep an look out. Cheers.

    • just use a chromecast…
for $599 55"/4K - if the picture/sound is decent and theres not too much lag between changing channels/input then i think this is decent

    • you could rent a Thorn from RR and re-define the word excrement

  • +2

Was much cheaper at last christmas sale

  • +8

Remember JVC are no longer JVC. The same is true for many of the older trusted brands.

    There are better cheap brands.

    • such as?

      • +4

        Hisense and TCL.

        • +2

          Is there a 55" 4K Hisense at $599? I'm happy to buy.

        • @mcp2kpro: Let us know if you find one.

        • Why 4K? Id rather get good quality FHD than crappy 4K.

        • @Ryballs: 4K crap? The screens either look no different with low quality material, or better with high quality 4K material…

Plus, you can sit closer to them - making them appear 'bigger' without being able to see the pixels on the display.

Double plus, you'd be hard pressed to find a high quality 1080p TV on the market.

        • I mean why buy a crappy brand 4K TV instead of a better brand FHD TV for around same price when 99% of content is still SD or FHD.

        • @Ryballs: Ah, I see. The point still remains though - even the good brands don't make 'high end' 1080p TVs anymore.

        • @BradH13: Sony still has FHD on sale every now and then. I'm waiting for the right size & price.

        • @Ryballs: yeah I dont need 4K. A good brand FHD with decent price is what I'm waiting for.

        • +1

@PJC: Dont worry, you will see it on OB first :)

      • +2

TCL and Hisense are pretty much the only decent cheap brands.

JVC, Bauhn, TEAC, Soniq, Palsonic, etc are generally not very good quality.

Edit: Bradh13 beat me to it..

        • +2

I had a Magnetbox but recently upgraded to the Carnavale.

        • My TCL gave me 7 good years before it developed issues. When I bought in in 2009, $698 for a 42" FHD was a particularly impressive deal.

  • +2

55" Hisense series 7000 is getting cheaper. Wait for it to come within your price range.

    • +1

yeah you could wait for the Hisense 7000 to get down to $599, by then, this JVC would probably drop to 299.
Do you see it comes down to who can afford what & when rather than "wait until something drop?"

  • +3

I purchased few months ago 48" (not smart TV} and I have no problem with tv
    https://www.ozbargain.com.au/node/284415

However, I am reluctant to support smart TV's like Soniq or other cheap brands

    • +1

I got the 48" one too (not Smart TV).
The picture seems great to me, I don't think it has HDR, but since I don't really understand what HDR is it didn't matter to me.
The speakers are terrible, I immediately bought a soundbar…

  • Interesting to see that TGG dont classify this as a smart TV:

    https://www.thegoodguys.com.au/jvc-55-inches140cm-uhd-led-lc…

    Smart TV No

    • +1

      that's a different model.

  • +2

Obviously, as a smart TV this is rubbish.
But is there any reason to get a dumb TV over this at the same price?

Could you not just use it as a dumb TV with a settop box (e.g. Mi Box Android TV)? (no internet connection to TV, just antenna and HDMI).

    • Yup. That's what I'm doing. Lots of options out there. The Mi Box is a good option. I'd suggest that, or other Android-based boxes or sticks out there.

  • No HDR

  • +1

JVC is not Japanese JVC any more, Don't buy it!

    • That makes it Chinese, like the rest of the TVs bargain you see on OB these days :)

      • +3

I rekon Hisense and TCL are much better than this fake JVC.

        • Yup. I had a Hisense non-4K for a good 5 years. Still perfect. Easily sold it off. They've got a good rep here.

        • +1

@flaminglemon: My samsung plasma still going strong after nearly 10 years. Easily my top choice of brand.

        • @flaminglemon: not here, 2 dead in 5 years

        • @mcp2kpro: Definitely. If could afford a good Samsung, I would. As for the cheaper ones, the quality is comparable with the other cheaper Chinese brands. Potentially same panels too. Like Kogan.

Although now, I think Samsung have asked them to stop advertising the fact that they use their panels. Kogan let you know if they use LG though.

        • @sweetnipples: Ouch. Sorry to hear that. Were you able to get money back? ACCC might have been able to help… although I'm not sure what the ACCC believe a reasonable lifespan would be for a TV.

        • @mcp2kpro:
          Samsung +1
My 10 year old Samsung plasma stopped working about 3 months ago. Googled the error, 5mins with screwdriver, sent off power board to eBay Electronic dude in Melbourne.
Couple of days and $135 later fixed :-)
Almost disappointed to not be able to justify new TV

        • @Filbert: lol i dont think it event worths $135 resell value. But yeah such a good TV and would probably last you a good few more years. They dont make good TV no more cos too much cost cutting these days.

  • +2

I wouldn't touch JVC anymore either, no matter the price. They aren't the old JVC company you remember.

    • +1

JVC, AKAI, TEAC, Sharp, etc are just branding companies available for whichever manufacturer buys the rights to use the name. Generally not a good situation.

      • +1

Akai* and Teac have always been junk though.

*except for their professional audio stuff.

        • Akai used to be very good about 30 years ago. I don't remember TEAC being any good.

        • +1

TEAC stuff was quite good up until the 80's. Look at what old TEAC amps are fetching on ebay. As you point out, they still make good gear, it's just that the majority of their products are cheap consumer items.

        • TEAC has made insanely high-end hifi equipment in the past, while simultaneously selling absolute garbage. I never understood why.
Same with Akai, they have produced good stuff alongside rubbish.

      • Sharp is still the Sharp (albeit now owned by Foxconn) that produce their own panels. They just don't make consumer TVs for the western market anymore.

    • I still have a JVC A-S3 amplifier I purchased brand new in 1980.
Product works fine still but the JVC name has gone to pooh!

  • They are not JVC.

They are Tempo. Tempo make all sorts of brands now like Hitachi/Bauhn/Phillips/Poloroid etc…

    • Tempo make the fans and toasters you see in $2 shops!

      • +1

        $2 toaster? 0.0

  • +4

I can't help but remember this whenever I think of JVC

  • Which store has stock in Melbourne?

  • +4

This is how JVC (the original Japan Victor Corp) used to be. In 1971 (yes, 46 years ago) I bought a then state-of-the-art JVC quadraphonic (whaaaat??) amplifier. I still use that amplifier today, to drive my home entertainment system, connecting DVD, CD, VCR and Smart TV to a couple of Studiocraft speakers and it has never had a fault or even had the case opened. Now that IS quality .. :-) .. !!

    • Good example of quality, but we are now in an age of inbuilt obsolescence.

    • No tubes in it? Can you remember what you paid for it?

    • I got a 2x 100 Watt JVC amp with external preamp built in 1980. Weighs around 25kg and frequency response is from DC to 400kHz! Hard to find gear like it today.

  • JVC TV = NO WAY!!!!
IF you enjoy a TV that lasts 6 months then goes black screen, knock yourself out.

  • +1

    I own the JVC 48 inch 4k
    It's a rebadged Bauhn
Same exact board inside / screen is a Samsung
    Never had issues
Quality is great, very low input lag even with my Xbox One attached
It does chroma 4:4:4 no worries at 8 bit
Just turn on enhanced hdmi in the menus
Mine cost me $328 at bigw

    • ^^^This is me, got one for Xmas, they do the job, I stream from my Chromecast & the optus fetch tv box does the recording and the netflix for me, all in all, great value, I would definitely recommed as a budget telly. The 4k really is 4k, 4 HDMI connections are enough for me. Wait for the price to drop, then go for it.
