Is Jetstar The World's Worst Airline?

Hi All,

As reported in the media today
"An international study has ranked Qantas’s low-cost carrier Jetstar as the worst airline out of 73 surveyed, with angry passengers listing lengthy delays, boarding, onboard staff and quality of meals as their biggest irritations."

http://www.9news.com.au/amp/world/2017/04/28/10/16/jetstar-w…

I personally have flown with Jetstar many times, I found that they are reasonable in term of the service, time performance and fares.
They have beat the price by 10% guarantee policy which is very handy for me since I need to pay 4 tickets at once every time we travel 😁😁😁😁

Personally, I don't believe that Jetstar should be the worst airline in the world.
Surely, there is another airline which is worse than Jetstar…

What do you think?

  • Jetstar is great for a cheap flight with no baggage. No issues in 10+ flights.

Jetstar's business model is clear when you take a Syd-Melbourne flight. They cancel flights until they fill the planes up. No one is going to question a 'maintenance issue'. I don't care if I'm not in a rush, they are a cheap, safe airline. Certainly their domestic is not as good as their international. I caught a Jetstar dreamliner to Auckland and a Qantas A320 (I think) back from Wellington. The Jetstar flight was way better.

This is untrue. Schedules are worked out weeks, if not months, in advance. Aircraft have to be at certain places at certain times in order to operate onward flights. If any airline was regularly cancelling not-full flights, their schedules and aircraft utilisation would be in tatters.

Catch the Melbourne to Sydney route regularly and you will see what you said doesn't apply. They cancel planes until they have enough passengers on the next one. It happens every day, especially on the weekend.

  • Ryan air are pricks and have to be the worst by far. I have used Olympic, AirAsia, Jetstar, Tiger and EasyJet aswell. Ryanair are just scumbags who will add fees at every opportunity.

  • How can anyone here possibly say that an airline is 'the world's worst'? You'd have to have travelled with all airlines in the world for your opinion to really be valid…

That said, I use Jetstar for domestic flights and I can't complain for the price.

Apart from Garuda, I'd say the ones that crash killing everyone would be the worst. Any poll would be skewed though, as it's a bit difficult for the people that experienced those flights to vote.

    • I'm sure their next of kin would be willing to vote for them. Not sure which way they would vote that is based on the insurance payout and the inheritance they received.

  • Haven't they heard of Lion Air and their habit of turning the air con off?

    https://www.indoboom.com/2013/stories/no-air-conditioning-on…

  • Been flying with them, their Singapore to Australia flight is the best compared to FlyScoot and AirAsia (KL to Australia). 787 Dreamliner + 10% price beat!

I've flown Jetstar about 30 times over the past 2 years. Mostly Melb-Syd but a few international flights too.
Without Jetstar, and especially their PriceBeat policy, I wouldn't have been able to see my friends and family as often as I have.
I am given an exit row almost every flight, without asking or paying for a seat.
I've been delayed a few times and cancelled once. But for the price I am very happy.
I think people complain too much about airlines. We live in a world where you can sit in a chair and fly like a bird to your destination.

  • I have "flown" with Jetstar mostly. When I tried different airlines, I was shocked with amazing customer service- They gave me free booze and food lol I was feeling blessed.
I think there is your answer- Its shit but cheap.

  • Tiger is way behind Jetstar

  • I've flown with jetstar more times than I can count. I usually travel carry-on only, often with a backpack and a violin (clearly not "personal item" size), and so far never been pulled up on it.

I've paid for extra legroom on international flights and it's still way less than full service airlines. No complaints there.

I never understood people who go on planes expecting edible food, pack your own or buy something for $10 at the airport, still way less than full service airlines.

At the end of the day, I like jetstar cos it gives you the option of getting to where you need with a saving in money that you can spend on your holiday or whatever

  • Flown on Jetstar quite a few times, and once internationally. Nice cabin crew, great prices. Haven't noticed anything that bad really. They're getting a lot of slack because they're a budget airline, not because their service is in any way 'bad' imo

  • The report includes a fraction of the world's airlines, and excludes Jetstar’s domestic competitor Tiger. The survey itself was carried out with 11,000 travellers from six European countries, as well as Brazil and Australia. Just 700 respondents were from Australia.

  • Flown with them many times. The airline isn't the problem, it's mainly the jerks that fly with them that make the flight unpleasant.

They pay crap all for their flight, then complain when their budget ticket on a budget airline is delayed.

Or its filled with idiots with no respect for anyone including staff and other passengers.

But that's the life of budget airlines.

  • They obviously haven't put in airlines from india

  • they have ridiculous customer service though, just the other day, I tried to change the date on a flight I booked and they were quoting more than twice the price of the available ticket at the time to change the ticket I had, I told them that was ridiculous and to stuff it, ignored the ticket I already had and bought a new one, the least they could do is to suggest that there is another option of discarding the ticket you have and buy a new one, if I were a sucker not checking current prices, I'd have paid twice as much! FML!

  • I heard this on the radio yesterday, didn't seem right to me.

Never had a bad experience with JetStar
Air Asia is worse in my view, can't comment of Tiger because i'd NEVER book with them.
But as far as "Worst in the World", seems pretty far fetched

My last flight was JetStar Dreamliner to Thailand, wonderful experience, full entertainment system with USB charging and Movie Player, nice cabin lighting, electric dimming windows. Allowed to me and others to move to entire free rows to lay flat. Could not have been happier with a LCC.

Also to New Zealand with Snowboards and haven't been charged excess weight, even though we all were over.

JetStar the worst hey, what cos United Airlines are so good
Malaysia loose entire aircrafts full of people (granted one was an act of war, but what were they doing flying there?)
Air Asia also dropped a plane full of people into the piss.

I'd accept a few delays over dieing any day.

    • Those accidents could easily happen to Jetstar planes, it's purely luck so not really good examples to use.

  • I can't see them being the worst, but they're definitely not the best. I'd put them in the bottom 25% of airlines I've flown with.

I'd love to fly another airline and vote with my wallet, but other airlines don't have the routes that jetstar do.

    My Biggest gripes are these:

The Auto-Checking of extras during the booking process.

Online checking flat out not working 75% of the time.

    Bashing for donations during flights.

$25 oversize baggage handling fee (If this is per leg, this is going to be ridiculous).

  • They're not amazing but they are no way the worst

  • I had a late night J flight out of Sydney cancelled (after boarding) due to weather a few months ago and they arranged free overnight accommodation for out-of-towners. They didn't have to do this, and it won them some brownie points in my book.

  • I too have flown Jetstar countless times and consider them to be OK for a budget airline. Yes, there's been a few delays and cancellations, but nothing major, they put me on a Qantas flight.
Surveys come surveys go, just like the political polls!!! Don't read too much into these things, just entertainment for the masses!!!

  • If you think Jetstar are bad, it means you haven't flown Tiger enough. I was flying often between Sydney and Melbourne, and Jetstar were often delayed, sometimes cancelled, but Tiger were worse. I won't even contemplate Tiger if I have to be somewhere on a specific day. With Jetstar I make sure the planned landing is many hours ahead of any important events. Qantas are the best but you pay for it.

So it is not that Jetstar are great, it is just that there are worse ones out there.

  • I doubt they are the worst. But they are a popular "bad serviced" airlines in Australia.

  • Crap but not the worst. Every single flight involves a delay or cancellation but none have disappeared yet….

  • Our return flight ( Direct to Melbourne )from Phuket was due to depart at 9pm, it got cancelled and the only flight we could get on the day, left at 10 am and had a 5 hour stop over in Singapore.
The last day of our holiday was spent travelling and sitting in Airports rather than relaxing around the pool.
To compensate us they gave us a $50 Jetstar Voucher….
    Never again.

  • Has anyone flown Spirit Airlines? They are now cramming a record 228 seats into the A321.

They also didn't pay for the seat reclining mechanisms when the aircraft were built to save on costs, so the seats don't recline!, the only airline in the world to do this on Airbus/Boeing.

I know where my vote is going. Spirit is just a miserable experience, they also charge for overhead locker space.

  • There is no link to the actual study.

Few of my questions regarding the validity:
    1. When was the study concluded ?
    2. What was the period ?
    3. What were the considerations ?
    4. Who ordered the study ?
    5. How's the ranking system ?

and I can think of another at least 30 questions that I can ask.

I personally flew with a number of premium and cheap companies (many in Europe). If I can choose, I will chose Jetstar anytime of day, mostly due to safety and general

On Friday, you may have seen media reporting on consumer group Choice releasing a “world” ranking of airlines, which considers Jetstar in last place at number 73.

As you can deduce from that number, the report includes a fraction of the world’s airlines, and importantly excludes just one of the major Australian carriers, Tiger.

There are a lot of holes in this latest Choice report, including surveying a sample of travellers from just eight countries and leaving out our domestic low fares competitor because they didn’t collect enough responses in their research. So the veracity of the report is questionable.

Choice seem to enjoy criticising airlines without understanding the safety standards we operate to or recognising the role of low cost carriers in making travel more affordable for millions of Australians.

We know how important it is to get customers to their destination on time, and we recognise there is room for improvement and our team is doing a lot of work behind the scenes. Weather is often the source of delays, particularly in the more tropical destinations we operate to, and we’ll always put safety before schedule.

We’re proud to have been named the best low cost carrier in the Asia Pacific for six years running by SkyTrax, among other internationally recognised airline rankings.

As you know, this survey does not reflect the positive experiences that our customers regularly share about travelling with us and we appreciate the support of our trade partners.

    • Yeah, yeah, I get it.
It is Tiger's fault that Jet Star is rated the worst.

      How dare you, Tiger?!

Dad: Teacher said your score was the lowest in your class!
Son: It's not my fault. Tiger didn't take the test.

  • Money talks and bullshit walks

  • There is always worse.

  • 9 is guilty of click bait hype. Even the first paragraph states "worst of the 73 surveyed". There are far more than 73 airlines in the world.

Personally I'm lucky, haven't had any issues with Jetstar, domestic flights only though. The major issues I've experienced with airlines were with TAP (strike, delayed a day), Malaysia (delayed baggage), Iberia (delayed baggage).

  • Interesting difference between the international survey conducted and your survey, which is effectively local.
    I suspect the difference is explained by;
Lack of experience with other airlines
The general acceptance that crap stuff must be good because it's Australia.

  • You thought Jetstar was bad? Try lion air.
