Was going to pick up one of these from BigW Joondalup WA last week when they were on for $39, as opposed to JB at $49 and HN for $38. To extend the life (MP4 capable) of my old Pioneer 60" Kuro Plasma, but we both forgot, and decided we would pick it up from BigW Whitfords WA, and found they have them on for $22 now. 10 units in stock by the TV's, and about 20 by the shelves for DVD and media players. Bargain price. Can be used as a HD STB, PVR or media player. Has HDMI and Composite outputs, provided with remote (and batteries), the PVR and composite cables (No HDMI cable). User manual is in English and covers more that just warranty info.
The Firmware is version 1.4 on the box, and Laser site has an available download update (Via the USB front socket) for V1.6 which is dated 12th January 2017
JB: https://www.jbhifi.com.au/tv-home-entertainment/players-reco… $49
HN: http://www.harveynorman.com.au/tv-blu-ray-home-theatre/blu-r… $38

Did they have any VHS recorders in stock?

    • now now record players are back in fashion. and everyone wants a NES mini. who's to say these are not the new cool thing

Can i install kodi on it?

    • Use double sided tape for extra security

  • Thanks I have a Kuro also.

Big W don't seem to have a pickup option?

    • Hey there G Wok, just call your local store to make sure they have stock before you go. The sarcasm aside, I do think that this is a nice way of extending the life of my Kuro Plasma, and I have not really seen a TV that is enough of a leap from the picture quality of the Kuro to make the upgrade worthy as yet, $22 hardly breaks the bank and it certainly does the trick.

      • +1

Yep totally agree, big fan of my trusty pioneer. Still going strong touchwood

    pew pew

  • This couldn't be good.

  • Can anyone tell me the difference between this and a chrome cast please?

    • +1

This is simply a hardware HD STB/ PVR, it is not an Android TV box, no operating system (as quoted by Braintrain1000 who would like to put Kodi on it, this is not like a MiBox3, they are simply taking the piss of course). If you need something to bring MP4 decoding to an older flat screen TV, then this is a cheap way to do it.

      • thanks Op54 and Russ

You can also use this to record anything on free-to-air television, for later viewing. Useful for sporting events and for the Olympics, as often they are broadcast in the wee small hours.

There are reports of the record function not working properly though.

Another thing you can use it for: I have a set-top-box (not this model) connected to the second input on my computer monitor. It is also hooked up to the speakers attached to my computer. That way I can use my computer as a TV if I need an extra TV, and web-surf during the commercial breaks. One push of a button on my monitor and it changes the video source.

      • Does your PC monitor have HDMI or do you use an adapter? (if so what type)

        • +1

My monitor is HDMI. I bought a heap of these adapters:
          http://www.buyincoins.com/item/39063.html

I find it is much more convenient and cheaper to connect monitors to PCs with HDMI cables. However HDMI cables aren't as rugged as DVI cables, so I keep a few spare $1 HDMI cables handy.

If your monitor has only one DVI and one HD15 jack, you'll have to connect your PC through the HD15 jack and put up with the slight reduction in clarity.

  • So, I could grab a couple of these and put in a couple of rooms in the house, so the kids and just plug and play stuff from their portable HDD's yeah?

      From specifications:
Media player for music, photos and video
Suitable for old and new televisions
Supports media files: MP3, WAV, WMA, JPEG, BMP, PNG, AVI, MKV, FLV, MOV, VOB
Connections: L/R Audio (RCA), HDMI, composite video (RCA) and USB
To assist others, it does not have 4K output, and is not capable of 3D (You know who this is for :-) )
I have not tried using mine as a media player so I cannot give you anything other than the info above

  • I'm a little confused.
So does this have an internal tv tuner/antenna to record tv?
    My reception is horrible

    • +3

Has an internal tuner, but you do need to plug in your indoor or rooftop antenna (It also has antenna pass through if that is of use also, antenna in and out)
All info about the unit can be found here:

  • I have a set top box on a older tv its the only tv we get it as antenna is only in that room.
Its close to 4 yrs old now not this brand but still working but do worry it stop working one day.
We did at one time have a av sender to send it from that tv to another room.
Im wondering what advantage i would have with this with current set top box which is older.
I do already have a kodi box set up with that older tv and kodi set up in another room on newer tv.
But when internet is down apart from blu ray/or dvd movies using a set top box has its good points and i suppose watching normal tv.
Seems a good price but do i need it?

    • @bwatt99: "Do I need it"?, I would say if you need to ask, then you do not need it :-), though I have purchased lots of things from Ozb that I did not originally think I needed :-)

  • Picked up a couple for old TV's that can't get the new channels.
How's this compare to the more expensive topfields? Can't buy them anymore though

  • I bought one of these this morning as my old one died last night (cost me $300 back in 2007). Main thing I noticed was the extremely small size compared to my last one. Otherwise it functions exactly the same, although I do notice it is slightly slower on the initial scan and when switching channels.

Only problem I had was as soon as I had set it up, and was playing with the remote I pressed the zoom button a few times to see what it did and the unit seemed to reset and required another channel scan; bu it hasn't happened again yet.

Edit: and it is also not compatible with my Phillips Universal Remote

    • Hello Tarinedier, shame about your Philips remote, we just set ours up with our Logitech Harmony Touch remote, and the Logitech Harmony site do have all the functions of the original remote mapped to the harmony remotes, so if anyone out there does have a setup using Harmony, then this is easy to add the macros in.

    • Hey Tarinedier, re the HD STB play problem you had, it may be worth using the Firmware update V1.6 (It is only about 3mb file size, and you simply put the .bin file onto a thumb drive and plug into the STB, then navigate to system update, the STB does the rest, and reboots after about a minute. (It did not lose any channels or preset favorites we had already set). We have already tried our unit using EPG recording already from today, and the episodes recorded fine with smooth playback.

      • How are you finding the quality op?
I've set mine up HDMI and I'm finding the HD channels slightly laggy with motion and the audio is a tiny bit out of sync. I'll try updating the firmware.

        • Hello again G Wok, I did the firmware upgrade just after I started using it. Yes I to find it slightly laggy when you first hop onto a HD channel then it syncs nicely, but then with a second or so it runs fine and smooth. I left my unit scanning channels while I looked for and downloaded the version update, and it was still scanning the channels when I returned to my theatre room with the USB drive with the update (So channel scanning was slow compared to my Panasonic PVR that I have in another room, but that Panasonic was around $500, so not comparing apples with apples there). Once setup I am happy with it myself, HD video is crisp and clean (My digital reception is good if that also makes any difference), it is providing me with that band aid for mpeg4 decoding that the Kuro cannot perform. I have connected up using HDMI lead not RCA's, and set the unit output to PCM audio with 1080P_50 video (If that makes any difference with sync).

        • @Op54:

          Thanks again, great find!

Is there a way to get a TV program schedule up with multiple channels? Seems like navigating it only gives the schedule for each individual channel.

Im gonna keep my Kuro as long as I can until OLEDS get more established I think.

        • @G Wok: I have not managed to get multiple channels on a single EPG schedule either, though I primarily just wanted this for the Mpeg4 decoding for my plasma, not so much as a PVR.

        • @Op54:

          Yep fair enough.

All channels working fine except 7HD is a pretty choppy especially with footy. My reception might not be as good as others though, just heads up for anyone interested in it. Great bit of kit otherwise

        • @G Wok:

Firmware update to 1.6 fixed this.

  • Cheers, I've got a portable projector in my room with a Mi Box, this plus one of these will give that setup access to actual TV.

    • Does anyone know what format the PVR works in? If it is MP4 it could potentially be useful for just recording this to later put on my Plex server.

      • +1

realfancyman: I ran an episode from ABC ME tonight for Operation Ouch from the epg, it has produced a file that plays on my PC with VLC fine, it is an .mts file, with video codec MPEG-1/2 Video (mpgv), and audio is MPEG audio layer 1/2 (mpga) stereo sample rate 48khz and bitrate of 256kb/s, also includes selectable subtitles within recording. I will try a HD movie from one of the HD channels to see what that comes out as.
I hope this helped you :-)

        • Thanks mate that is much appreciated. I have just checked and with Plex, although that format cannot be played directly, the transcoder takes care of it so it would work. Would be interesting to see what happens with the HD channels though

        • +1

@realfancyman: Set various programs overnight for HD (7HD, 9HD, ABC HD), and video is: H264 MPEG4 AVC (Part10) 1920 X 1080 25fps. Audio A52 AC3 sample rate 48khz, bitrate 384kb/s, includes selectable subtitles also. In fact, I used to use a TV card (PCI) in my computer for grabbing tv shows that I want to copy and hold on to, this Laser STB is actually much easier, and does not require my computer to switch on overnight to do the captures. Not sure why some review sites would say that recording does not work, I assume that they were not using it right (Read the instructions)

        • @Op54: Much appreciated mate, that's very helpful

    • +1

We have installed the Oz TV catch up apps with Kodi Krypton on our MiBox3, but actual live TV without using your internet is always handy too :-)

      • I wonder if those little $14 micro USB tuners would work on mibox …

        • I've actually got one of those already so it would be good if that was the case.

  • Haha, I remember set top boxes.

  • Can someone kindly help me confirm that this set top box can be used by my projector so it will be functional as a TV since my projector doesn't have the TV tuner.

    • +1

You still need to connect the box to an antenna, but you can always get one of these if there isn't a port already available.

  • Out of stock, at least for online (both eBay and Big W's website).

    • +1

At least 30 of these sitting on the shelf at Big W Kingsway WA

  • Can I record my Foxtel output or ps4 gameplay???

    • No.

    • +1

Set-top boxes don't normally have video inputs, so no, it can't record anything that isn't a terrestrial TV station.

But if your Foxtel and ps4 have composite video outputs that work (try them first), you can probably use a PC to record the video, using a video capture card like this:
      http://www.umart.com.au/newsite/goods.php?id=30254

It can receive digital TV, and can also capture composite video and s-video.

I say "probably" because some devices deliberately produce specially-crafted video signals to make recorders fail. These signals are designed so they won't affect a TV, but can stop some recorders from working.

  • There were 8 units on the shelf at Big W Karingal this afternoon.

  • Firmware update 1.8 available, although I'm having trouble installing it…
