  • I tried to use the coupon on the following bag and it didn't work… http://www.ebay.com.au/itm/NEW-Samsonite-Octolite-Hardside-S…

  • I'm not getting the click and collect option on the ones I want.

it has free shipping so if the suitcase comes to you battered up, just exchange it instore

      • +1

Battered up? What do you expect when you send your luggage?

  • +8

I'd suggest checking and comparing the prices of the other online luggage stores before buying.

Other stores sell luggage, including Samsonite, at low "every day" prices that then end up being a similar price to Myer's occassional "huge" discounts that are off the manufacturer's much overpriced RRP.

    • the good thing is there's 20% off from their sale price, so it does come out cheaper than others. Ex: Firelite 55cm comes to $278 and you should be able to reclaim GST under TRS if you are going overseas making it ~$245. That's a pretty good value actually.

      • If you check in the luggage, how can you claim GST at an airport counter?

        • you have some special way of doing that I think, don't remember how exactly though, for this one, it's a hand luggage so it'll come with me.

        • +5

You would need to go to the Customs Office at the airport before checking in, and tell them that you will be checking in the items you'd like to claim for GST.

They will then ask for the receipts, sight and confirm the items, and stamp the receipts, saying that items have been sighted.

You can then check in the luggage as usual, and after you've passed the immigration, you can go to your Tax Refund counter and claim your GST.

        • That 55cm is allowed in the cabine if you want less hassle on claiming TRS :)

      • +1

You might be right - it's just good practice to still compare prices because some people get blinded by advertisements such as "50% off!", etc.

Firelite 55cm comes to $278 and you should be able to reclaim GST under TRS if you are going overseas making it ~$245. That's a pretty good value actually.

I'm assuming that the invoice from Myer's eBay store will show the original price that's over $300 to allow you to claim TRS.

        • based on my purchase yesterday, invoice says listed price including any myer discount but will not say the ebay 20% discount which I assume cause ebay is covering for.

        • yeah from my experience, only Bing Lee recorded the sale price instead of their price and that was for a store pickup, I'm guessing Myer will list the 300+ value.

        • @enzioFirenze: what do you mean by $300+ value ?

        • @Frozensage: so invoice had the discounted MYER price excluding the 20% ?

      • +2

doesnt it have to be over $300 before you can claim TRS?

      • +1

But ebay has additional 20% off

  • +1

Is samsonite really worth the price? Wife wants one mainly cause of the brand. I'm skeptical spending more money are these things…

    • I have one Samsonite large suitcase (Cosmolite range) for almost 7 years now and not a dent. Very lightweight but durable. I said go for it especially with this 20% sale.

      • My grandma bought me large Samsonite suitcase when I was 18 for my first overseas travel. I'm now 33 and still using it. Out of all the things I had 15 years ago, this is the only thing I still have and use. So yeah, these things are built to last.

    • +2

Mate, the sales do not know how to sell this product. A luggage should be fully loaded with 25kg on display. Fully loaded Samsonite luggage pulls through rugs or carpet really nicely, others require you to go to gym for 1 year. Especially true with lose rugs, which can get all stucked together under neath the wheels of a non branded luggage. You wife is correct, go for it.

      • This is so true - all luggage rolls easy when unloaded.
As soon as you load them up this is when the story changes.

    • then again I have a $50 suitcase that is now up to about 8 overseas trips over 12 years and still works. the zip pull thing fell off but thats a 50c fix.

  • Bagworld is often cheaper than Myer, even after their discounts. Bagworld also pricematches in case you see something cheaper elsewhere.

    • But Myer ebay has additional 20% off, and I highly doubt that bagworld will price-match after-coupon price

      • Bagworld priced matched for me before (even based on a Myer 2-for-1 sale where I only wanted 1 suitcase), but for those close to a Myer, it makes more sense to purchase from Myer then of course.

  • Could this be combined with the groupon $85 for $100 ebay voucher?

  • American Tourister is a sub-brand of Samsonite and generally uses similar or 1-2-3 generation old Samsonite designs and materials, but for me its the sweet spot for value.

  • I always get confused on how some airlines have baggage dimension restrictions yet these bags are still sold - technically the 75cm and 81cm Samsonite are oversize for carriers such as qantas?

Has this ever been an issue. I want a new larger bag but not if its going to cause issues. I have flights with royal brunei later this year who dont appear to mention any dimensional restrictions?

    • +1

I've flown to a LA with Qantas and virgin using my 81cm at lease 6 times and have never had any issues.

      • Yeah i really would like the 81cm and i have pulled the pin and bought the firelite but i just find it crazy that there is actually dimensional restrictions in the first place - surely weight is enough! I have read that its mostly not a problem but i dont want to lay out the cash and find its going to cause issues everywhere i go.

        • +1

I have flown with Singapore Airline, Qatar Airway, Jetstar (international flight) and other full service airlines with my 81 cm suitcase without any troubles at all. Not sure about Qantas though.

        • +1

thanks for the feedback i spose im worrying about nothing then!

        • @Fin88: There are some low-cost carriers that I was looking at for my European trip where the 81cm Cosomolite would have exceeded the total dimensions limit of 158cms (HxDxW) for checked-in luggage. Now, whether the staff at the counter would have enforced the limit is not known, but I checked one airline's T&C and it said that the surcharge for oversized luggage was 200 Euros!! For what it's worth, I own the 75cm Cosmolite and I think it's a very good size. Even the 69cm version would be good enough for most people, given how light these cases are to begin with, and you can really fit in a lot of stuff.

from experience, …you'll have no problems with RBA.

just make sure you don't have more than 7+ kg in your hand luggage.

sometimes, even having 2 x 4-kg bags is ok,…because the airlines are more concerned about individual items being more than 7-kg

      • Thanks for tip! Thinking i might just take a backpack as a carry on anyway so shouldnt be an issue.

        • as long as you don't look "bulky" and struggling with all the luggage, you won't attract their attention.
however, i have noticed that Asian airport staff (Asian = in Asia, and not Chinese) tend to enforce the 7-kg weight-restrictions a lot more, than nowadays in western airports (except the U.S. :-\ )

these Asian staff sometimes have a weight-machine at the terminal entrance and they focus on everyone's hand-luggage is less than 7-kg
( they are like hawks at Manila Airport! )

so, it's best to just have less than 7-kg,…and at times, even if you have something 3 and 6-kg,…they let it slide.
especially, when the flight is not full.

  • Is there a difference between firelite and cosmolite other than the design?

    • zippers on firelite are covered with PU leather or some type of water resistant fabric so that water is less likely to get into your luggage.

      • Great thanks!

  • Does this extra 20% apply to the Blite 3 range aswell or just the Firelite/Cosmolite range?

    • Yes, you can use it for Blite3 range

  • Nice, got a Samsonite Octolite Hardside Spinner Case Large 81cm Black 4.5kg for $205 without the cashreward
My first own case, very happy

  • Awesome price on the Octolite 76cm after the 20% off and cashrewards! Cheers GooGoogaga - been waiting to pounce on one of these for a while!

  • RRP seems significantly overpriced. Do these luggages ever sell at RRP?

  • Thanks OP - bought Samsonite Octolite Hardside Spinner Case Large 81cm Black for $205.

  • To those considering spending less $$ for a heavier luggage. How much is 1 kg excess baggage? It gets up to $110USD on the band 4 flights for singapore airlines. And if you do a lot of shopping overseas, every kg counts.

    Food for thought.

  • Thanks! Also got the Samsonite octolite large 81cm

  • Thanks OP, bought a few Octolite cases (81, 75 and 2x 55). Family trips sorted!

Colours we wanted were not in stock, so ordered white and will go back and swap for black when our local myer gets them in :)
