AmEx Auspost a 0.5 Point Merchant?

I have a platinum edge amex card and am looking for ways to pay my bills and maximise points. I came accross this in the terms:

"0.5 merchants classified as; "utilities" including gas, water and electricity providers; "government" including the Australian Taxation Office, the Australian Postal Corporation (Australia Post), federal/state and local government bodies; and "insurance" excluding insurances offered by American Express."

Does this mean going in to pay bills and using post billpay are 0.5 points?

Please excuse my ignorance

Cheers

    yep

  • If you use AustPost BillPay - but use the PAYPAL payment method - you will get 1 Point, since it is Paypal. Looking at a recent transaction I paid this way, the description is PAYPAL*AP. Mine is the Essential card. But I imagine it is similar, in your case.

      Thanks
Just the helpful answer I was looking for
Do you feel it's worth it with the $1.75 post bill pay fee? I'd imagine you need to spend approx. $600 to break even point wise

      • Generally-speaking, if this is a free method of payment I would go for it. If not, well, you are on the right track, to check first if it is worth the fees.

For the Essential card, with a conservative reward rate of 0.741%, bill has to be above $236.17 to justify the $1.75. Not sure about the platinum edge. But seeing that the plat edge card has a fee, I would imagine the reward rate has to be better than the free Essential card. But please double-check first to work out the break-even point. Cheers.

      • Also, reading your post carefully again, you said you are going into store to pay the bill. I always just pay online, so I can use PayPal - but if you go in-store, I am not sure if PayPal is still an option. Perhaps just pay online, if you decide it is worth doing.
