Overwatch Loot Box probabilities revealed

So there's a new law passed in China that forces game developers to reveal the probabilities / odds of random-draws and dropped loot in MMO games:

2.6 …Online game publishers shall promptly publicly announce information about the name, property, content, quantity, and draw/forge probability of all virtual items and services that can be drawn/forge on the official website or a dedicated draw probability webpage of the game. The information on draw probability shall be true and effective.

2.7 Online game publishers shall publicly announce the random draw results by customers on notable places of official website or in game, and keep record for government inquiry. The record must be kept for more than 90 days. When publishing the random draw results, some measures should be taken place to protect user privacy

So Blizzard has released this info in China regarding how often certain items are given from their current loot box system:

  1. Every box contains at least one rare (blue) item.
  2. Players get an epic (purple) item once every 5.5 boxes.
  3. Legendary items appear once every 13.5 boxes.

  • Still waiting till Overwatch goes on sale for less than $60bucks then I'll try it

    • They've had several free weekends

      • Me too! Its been that price since it came out and its been a couple of years, hasn't it?

        • 1 year. may 2016..

i dont see any reason for them to drop their base price, just because the game has been out for a year. they're still constantly developing the game - adding new maps, heroes, balance changes, event mini games etc. for free - and the game is highly popular. the game has gone on sale though.

most games that have dropped in price after a year or two have ceased development, have dead multiplayer - or have almost necessary DLC purchases that put it back in line with a full priced title.

        • For one complete year, yes!

    • How u gonna miss it when it was on sale during chinese new year

      • May 24th, perhaps even another 50% off sale.

        • Ooh may I ask why that's a possibility?

        • +2

@spaghettiman: The last 50% off was during the Lunar new year event. Following on from that, Overwatch's anniversary will be the biggest event of the year which would be a good time for another big sale to reap in new players + generate hype.

The question is whether Blizzard is feeling generous or not considering it's existing 13mil + playerbase -I wouldn't mind making an alt for $25 :D

        • @Baebs: O yeah that's right. It's crazy how Overwatch is not even a year old yet!

        • @Baebs:

          13mil + playerbase

          30m?

        • @psyren89: Yes.

        • +1

@Baebs: Really hope this happens, i'm so keen to get the game but its so expensive

    • +1

Overwatch is currently selling for $29aud if you're still interested. See here: https://www.ozbargain.com.au/node/308755

And CTRL+F for the MXN currency discussion.

  • They appear to be dodging 2.6 quite a bit with that information.
So a legendary every 13.5 boxes….all with different droprates as well no doubt, nicely avoiding actual droprates of any particular item.
Good old blizzard rng on rng on rng ;D

    • There's also duplicates, so even though it's guaranteed that it's a legendary every 13.5th box, it might not be a unique legendary. It could be something you already own…

A pile of 500 gold also counts as a legendary too, so gotta factor that in.

  • These rates are only confirmed for China, for all we care Blizz could be running different odds for the rest of the playerbase.

I'm not too skeptical nor do I care tho, 7 legendaries in the past 20 boxes ;-)
