Navman M100 GPS $89 @ ALDI (Special Buys)

130

Saw this one on Aldi Special Buy starting on the 13th May (Saturday). I use Waze and Google Maps for navigation but there are many people out there prefer a dedicated GPS for their cars. Looks like a decent price for this 5" (known-branded) GPS.
I could not find any reviews or other prices for this one though.

Spec:
5" LCD touchscreen
Australia/New Zealand maps
30 days latest map guarantee
Spoken street names
Premium safety alerts including school zones
Speed limit alerts
Smart find keyword search
Fuel type POI search
Smart route historical traffic info routing
3D junction views
Advance lane guidance
Driver fatigue alert
Premium language support
Landmark guidance

Surely phones killed these devices years ago!?

    • +5

      Phone lags with connection issue,

P platers wont be able use their phone while driving

      • +3

That's a good point @OhMaJuck. I didn't know about the restriction for P-platers until recently

    • Yep for sure

    • +5

A lot of people that go 4x4 and have no reception still use them. They have more detail on unsealed roads as well.

      • +2

MAPS.ME (or similar) + Open Source maps solves that one.
+ always carry paper based maps anyway.

  • Does anyone know if there are "lifetime" maps, or pay for yearly updates like Aldi's house brand?

    • +1

I don't think this one comes with lifetime map updates. It says "30 days latest map guarantee"

      • is it possible to manual update (download the update file from somewhere on the internet and load to the device)?

      • Thanks dealspider, I assumed that it was implicit in the quoted term "30 days latest map guarantee" as $89 being too cheap for lifetime maps update….

        • No worries. I totally misread the "30 days latest map guarantee" thinking that you get the latest map updates for the life of the device until I found the detail explanation in the Navman website.

  • +1

Just checked, you can only download the latest maps within the first 30 days (of use) then you have to pay pay pay

a friend has an older device and for $90 you can get 4 updates during a 12 month subscription

I am waiting for another JBHIFI GPS sale missed out on a $100 unit with lifetime maps

    • +6

Compare $90 yearly map updates to spending $30 more on the Navman MOVE70LM 5" GPS st JB Hifi for $119 that includes Lifetime Map Updates.

      • +2

Have to agree. I wouldn't buy a dedicated GPS unit nowadays unless it came with lifetime maps. That said, like the OP, I use Waze everyday and my Garmin GPS (updated with lifetime maps) spends its life in the glovebox as a backup.

  • Bear in mind lifetime map updates are only for the life of the product. Question is, how long does Navman think the life of one of their products actually is? Anyway I use a Garmin that is still using a map from 2012 and it's surprising what it still knows.

  • This isn't listed in the Navman website.

So whilst the price for a 5" screen is tempting you'd be better off getting a current model with better map updates.
