This one from DSE has an extra lens included though doesn't it?

In his defence, the price you quoted was for a single lens kit. And i'm not sure if dwi has Australian warranty, i believe they are grey imports. In any case, the price of the camera has been 743 all the while. Have been looking out for cameras for almost a month, so no positive either.

    • grey import with no warranty nor fair comparison

      • what does grey mean? :)

parallel import bough from wholesaler in malaysia camera not made for australian market

    • Vote revoted as it is not a fair comparison.

  • DWI is imported model. You will not get Aust warranty from Canon. With the digital slr, you WILL want to have Aust warranty. trust me.

    This is a OK deal.

  • If talking about the deal, not cheap.
If talking about the product, don't buy this "below entry level" DSLR if you really intended to play DSLR in the future.
If you just want to have a better photo quality, M 4/3 camera is already enough!

    But thanks for posting.

so which brand/model should I get if I wanna get started in DSLR???? I've always been a point and shoot guy…currently using a Sanyo HD2000 Full HD Camcorder/camera hybrid…
but noticed the pics I take (especially during night/low night/indoor, the picture gets blurry without flash.

So would getting a DSLR magically make my blurry low night shots go away (without using flash)??

    • The 1000D has been around for a couple of years as an entry level camera. Canon does not sell 'below entry level' DSLRs. This is just an old model being sold for an attractive price before the new model arrives.

For the casual photographer wanting to experience a DSLR the 1000D is very good. The pro photographer, sports photographer or dim light photographer will of course go elsewhere.

I got this model camera when it first came out.
Not a bad camera for someone getting into the DSLR market.

Only criticism, if it doesnt have IS (image stabilised) lenses, which it doesnt by looking at the DSE page, dont expect crystal clear shots if your a shaky photographer like myself.
Half my pictures with the 75-300mm lens look like they were taken by Michael J. Fox :(

    FML

  • Comparing it with Camera House, it is cheaper for the twin which is $889 there (http://www.cameraaction.com.au/call1300-303-191/products.asp…), but as for the camera itself, there are better entry level DSLRs for around the same price.
A decent deal for the DSLR, non grey.

  • Meh, it's pretty poor, only 9 AF points. The new Nikon D3100 has 11 and better sensor for noise.

Plus both lenses from the info there don't have IS (image stabilisation). This makes the long lens a piece of rubbish, and the 18-55 has VERY poor quality

3100 will be about 1200 at dse on release, not a fair comparison

A product from a quality manufacturer +sold by a reputable dealer at a +good price.. has all the makings of "bargain" for me.
I would not touch a grey market camera at this price or even for $200 less.
Many may bag this camera but I do not notice any details of a better buy (for this money or less).
As for blurry pics when using a 300mm lens… I would surely recommend using a tripod or some form of bracing when taking those sort of shots, not waving the camera around.
    Good post OB21.

    • I personally don't mind products from the grey market. I got the Nikon D90 with a twin kit below AUD1000 delivered. That's nearly half of the price it sells for in Australia. The camera and lenses have a 12-month warrenty provided by a large Australian-based store.

      • camera is not…will not…only lens have international warranty camera body is always local warranty…means you have to send back to your manufacturer…tho canon and nikon are good brands usually dont have problems for many yrs..

  • No image stabiliser? Fail

  • They are kit lenses…. both are better than a point and shoot, but you need better glass.

And for the guy with low light situations, you need a lens with a low F-stop (ie canon's nifty fifty is an f/1.8). Its a great lens for a cheap price. It only has 5 blades so if you want a better quality 50mm prime, you'll need to go to the L-series

  • lol @ everyone claiming the long lens needs image stabilisation. The glass in the lens will be ordinary (not sharp like an L series lens), but you can definitely take decent enough photos with this kit lens. You just need enough light. These days bumping the ISO up doesn't kill the shot but still lets you get a decent shutter speed.

  • Grey market products are not the problem.
Digital products such as digital cameras are seldomly have problems.
For warranty, I bought a point-and-shoot Canon digital camera and Panasonic DV camera from Hong Kong few years ago, never have problem.
Basically these 2 products have HK local warranty but no differences from buying grey product since I won't have warranty here in Aus. But the price were much less than over here.

    • i bought ixus point and shoot 11 months in the cmos failed needed complete replacement interenally ( to repair $450 for $550 camera as i bought it ehr had warranty no probs if grey market your $100 saving on that particular model would have quickly evaporated

      • in general, despite their 'greyness', most australian retailers will offer repair or replace warranty.
Some people may even prefer dealing with the retailer than the larger manufacturer (often smaller operations with more of a 'human' element).
