FTA STB/Netflix/Plex - Any Device That Can Do All 3?

Struggling to find something to tick all 3 boxes!

Have an older screen in the bedroom which needs a separate STB. Current setup is a t-box as the STB and a WDTV for media. Ideally I want a device that does both, including full Plex support.

Thoughts:
Telstra TV - no FTA
Apple TV - no FTA
Xiaomi Mi TV - no FTA

  • um… considering it you spacky, I suspect you are capable enough to rig a mini pc to achieve all this? Any reason that won't work? FTA with a tv tuner usb or card… netflix through a addon or browser in kodi or plex and it should naturally handle any media you could throw at it….

    • Nah, can't justify the $$s over the smaller media players tbh :/

      • ?? a Core2Duo machine you pick up off the street on Hard Rubbish day should be sufficient as a base, then all you need is a TV tuner and maybe a wireless Keyboard and Mouse assuming you don't already own a spare set (which seems unlikely given your long OzBargain history)

        • If I did it for the bedroom it would need to be a small form factor, not a normal case

        • @Spackbace:
Just run it bare, strapped to the back of the TV.

          @scubacoles:

Bare in the bedroom never ends well 😂

        • @Spackbace:
On the contary, bare in the bedroom usually does!

    Raspberry Pi with Kodi?

    • Something homebrew like this is the only thing that will achieve your aims, whether it be a Pi, some other board, or a HTPC.

Buy a new TV bro, by the time you buy all the set top boxes you could of got a TV.

    • Assuming the TV is something like 32-40", then I would agree just buy a new TV. If your TV is that old that it doesn't have a digital tuner, then a cheap modern TV would probably have a better screen (and better energy usage) and avoids the need for extra space for a separate box, extra cables, etc. Eg you can get a 32" smart TV for ~$350 or a 40" for ~$400. Can probably get better pricing that that also.

    • 50" FHD tv that cost me $50 ;) not gonna be close in price that's for sure

  • Probably overkill, but an Xbox with the optional TV tuner.

Fetch TV can do FTA and NetFlix well, can't do Kodi / Plex. This page discusses some options that may do all:

You're not wrong, but it's worth mentioning it can do DLNA (from memory) which Plex supports. So you won't get the full experience but it's not a terrible option.

    • Yeah I think Fetch might be the best bet. Just hopefully the media playback is decent via DLNA and the wireless is good enough

  • I use Telstra TV for plex it works well. You are right, no FTA.. So if I want to watch cooking or renos I go to my kitchen or next door, respectively.

Do you need FTA via tuner? I mean FTA channels all have digital apps for you to use and stream live tv. You might want to look at setting up kodi as a live streamer with an EPG scraper so that it works like FTA although i haven't seen one specifically done for Australia's FTA channels but i'm sure they'll be a guide online somewhere

  • I think Mibox will do live TV if you also buy a HDHomeRun. Shield TV will. It's getting pretty pricey though.

    • and more devices…. He is trying to achieve this with less devices.
