Optus 4G X Smart (5.5", 720p, 1.5GB RAM) $99 @ Woolworths

80

5.5" and 1.5 GB RAM are striking.

Battery life seems low.
The SoC might be a bit weak, 1.1GHz quad - not clear what it actually is…

Battery is quite small too… 15 hours of talk time when the average of most devices nowadays is rated around 21 hours.

EDIT: After a bit of sleuthing, this appears to be a rebadged Alcatel Pop 4+
    http://www.gsmarena.com/alcatel_pop_4+-7936.php

It runs a pretty pokey Snapdragon 210 (Cortex A7 series) with Adreno 304 GPU.

Good work! SN 210 has Adreno 304 GPU, which has 20 GFLOPS… really need double that for 720p, so this will struggle with anything graphically demanding. Probaby fine for regular use though, I guess.

Heh Scotty can we get a gold "detectives badge" for members that do the additional research that helps us decide if a post is actually a good deal? Scrimshaw deserves one!

thanks for the word of praise.

        • +3

Scrimshaw is always spot on with his phone advice. +1

    • Thanks, I couldn't find it when I was looking earlier and wasn't going to spend all day looking.

Nice to see budget phones starting to get more than 1gb of ram

not to mention 24months warranty on this phone as well!

I used one of these for a while before getting my S8.

For $99 it's a great phone, it worked fine for all the day to day apps (social media, uber, spotify) and a bit of gaming, mainly clash royale.

The bad things are: it's Camera which is almost useless, not a lot of ram so clearing apps becomes a regular thing and if you have small hands you'll have to use both.

It's obviously network locked to Optus….
So the question is, will this work with Virgin prepaid account, which uses the Optus network anyways?

    • +1

      Yes it will

      • +1

How sure are you regarding this?
So I wouldn't have to unlock this phone at all for my Virgin prepaid use…just buy and put in sim card and use?

        • That's what I did for an Optus-locked phone, to use it on Amaysim - no probs.

But I understand your hesitation. To check specifically for using an Optus-locked on Virgin, I suggest asking on the "mobile carriers" forum on whirlpool.

  • I always wonder with these cheap phone deals - are there other 'non-phone' uses, i.e. wifi front door/baby monitoring camera ?
Anyone got suggestions re software etc ?

    • Most phones start to run hot in always on applications as they aren't designed for that type of use.

  • This deal is back on again. Just bought one yesterday

    • How's the camera quality?

      • Coming from a Nexus 6P, pretty bad. Focus is slow, you gotta be really still for a clear shot. Overexposed most of the time, as well.
