Olympus E-M10 Mkii w/ 14-42EZ Lens $721.65 @ JB Hi-Fi

150

Great price for one of the most capable and best performing mirrorless cameras on the market. Nice and compact and offering very sharp images. This price beats JB's usual special of 15% off which is normally the cheapest you can get for local stock.

That has a different lens. the EZ lens in the JB deal is MUCH nicer (and more expensive). Source: I have both

        Ahh yep, my bad :)

  • I was considering the a6300 to take travelling but this is almost half the price (with a smaller sensor though). Guide me, Ozbargain!

I did loads of research when I was looking for a travel camera. I ended up with the a6000 and am very happy. I was weighing up between the a6000 and a6300 but I personally couldn't justify the price difference for a dedicated travel camera.

The EM10 MkII is more than enough for travel. Nice and small so it doesn't get in the way. The extra money can go towards either a fast prime (for portraits) or telephoto zoom (for animals or just being able to zoom in general). The small size of the system becomes even more beneficial the more lenses you add.

Play with the funky filters and nice features like live composite (create star trails etc). Silent electronic shutter also helps keep things discreet (you can choose to not use the mechanical shutter and it's silent so people aren't too aware that you're snapping away).

The sensor is not that much smaller than the a6300 and unless you make money selling pics I wouldn't worry about it. And there are people who make a living selling photos who shoot solely with Micro Four Thirds so I'm sure it's good enough for mere mortals such as ourselves.

The sensor is in fact half the size.

        • Sensor size comparison (assuming this is accurate) http://www.discoverdigitalphotography.com/2012/digital-camer…

        • @bargainjargon:

OK, not dead on 2x the size but after taking into account that MFT is 4:3 and most print ratios are 3:2 (as is APSC sensors) you end with about 1.84 times larger and as someone who has owned both an EM5, an EM1 and now a Nikon D7200 I can say that it does make a noticeable difference.

        • @Namesareapain:

The difference doesn't seem all that much to me but if it's a big enough difference to others then that's cool. That's why I posted it without any comments. Up to the buyers to decide.

I currently shoot with Micro Four Thirds and Sony FE. I previously had NEX cameras. (Also Pentax Q and Nikon 1 but those don't count, right? :P) For travel, I'd be keeping it light (just me, others may be okay with lugging around something bigger) but I'd still want to achieve a shallow depth of field. Micro Four Thirds lets me do this. Carrying around a couple zooms and a couple of primes all day is a non issue. Also IBIS and e-shutter are very useful to me. Sony has started to put these in their cameras but those models are gonna cost you. I think Fuji has e-shutter too. I actually like the Fuji system because of all the primes. I love primes.

If I was hoping to achieve something specific, sure I'd go APS-C or full frame. But if I just want to keep it light and fun, it's Micro Four Thirds all the way.

But like I said, this is just me. What works for me may not work for others. Although I do feel that if you're just starting out, don't go overboard spending too much since even the cheaper stuff can produce excellent photos. Upgrade your skill before upgrading to the expensive stuff.

Why not get the a6000 if budget is a factor? Nearly as good -minus 4k video but also half the price. PS if you want to go m43 path then maybe something newer like the gx85 or GX8 would be better.

      • Yep and you can get 4k video which surely has to be sort after in a travel camera.

I want to know how this camera is one of the best mirrorless cameras on the market. We have the Pana G's through to GH4 and GH5, Sony A's through to the A7 varieties, Fuji and the other Olympus more capable models.

It is an old camera and I just can't see it reaching the "one of the best" levels in what is currently available. Sounds more like an owner reassuring themselves.

This camera is excellent for stills. Great manual controls with many tactile buttons and dials.

Video quality is not that great though :( just passable

  • How does this compare to the lumix G7? cheers!

    • +1

E-M10 MkII has excellent sensor-based image stabilisation and a tilt-only screen. The G7 has 4K video including a burst mode for extracting individual 8mp images and a fully articulated screen. The Panasonic is also feels to be a bigger camera than the Olympus by being much deeper and having a full handgrip but the weight of each camera is about the same.

  • What's a good cheap portrait lens for this? The ones I looked at were like $400+

    • The Panasonic 25mm f1.7 or Sigma ART 19mm or 30mm f2.8 might be worth a check. They go for about 250, but during sales you can find them for less than 200.

    • I can certainly vouch for the 30mm sigma 2.8. 60mm also very good

I loved that until I upgraded to the pana Leica 25 1.4

Beyond that there aren't that many "super cheap" portrait lenses. Can look at Samyang (about 350+) or get an older canon FD lens with an adaptor

Olympus 45mm f1.8 but buy second hand

      • I grabbed one off gumtree about a month ago for $230 (+Chinese knock-off hood) and I absolutely love it. It has easily been the best lens purchase I've made to date.

      • For me this is a must have Micro Four Thirds lens if shooting portraits.

  • Amazing ….not one comment from someone saying " but my mobile phone is 24 megapixel" and its smaller.
