Chinese Power Plugs and Sockets - What Is The Difference from Australian?

I have noticed that most power plugs have the cords coming sideways from the plug opposite the earth blade side, which is unfortunate, as it interferes with the switch on our wall or powerboard socket.

Any idea why?!?

  • A lot of sockets in small spaces are behind beds, cupboards, etc and a perpendicular plug and cord takes up too much room. And anyway manufacturers make plugs and wall warts how they like and will always displease somebody: plug too fat, cord on wrong side, wall wart too wide, etc.

    • I like the perpendicular…
The point is (see picture) it is coming out the wrong side and can be dangerous if it presses the wall socket switch to a middle, possible arching position.
Nut sure how to explain better…

  • Australian plug are usually have insulated on the prongs

    • That, too

  • Besides the insulation the prongs are also thinner. While they're both using different standards they are compatiable and will work.

    • Sometimes. I have some switches/powrboards that do not made connection because they are designed for thicker prongs.

I could be wrong, but I believe the Chinese power points are effectively upside down compared to ours - they have the earth pin at the top.

    • +1

it was bugging me and your right i started looking at actual installations in China they are used upside down as you say, majority not switched, and they often have a universal shaver socket or multi plug outlet too to suit all the things they copy from around the world.

  • In addition to AU needing insulation on pins, CN earth pin also longer than AU one.

  • Have a look at this Mi Gateway:

Can you see the problem I was referring to (re: switches on AU powerpoints)?

They sell this with an "AU power adaptor" which is, in function, just a spacer (and without earthing…)

    • The earth pin in the gateway probably connects to nothing anyway. Earthing is for devices where metal surfaces are exposed to the user. A lot of devices in plastic housings have 2 pins only plugs.

But I agree that this is bad design, a plug that has too big a footprint.

      • I agree that the earthing is probably used only for better stability in the socket.

BUT such a "power adaptor" should NEVER have less pins on the plug side than on the socket side!!!
it gives you the false impression that if you plug a 3 prong plug into it the earth connection might go somewhere!
