It is equipped with a variety of features that perfectly capture the most amazing moments in any environment, including a bright f/2.0 lens, Microscope Mode, a variety of underwater modes, and GPS. Reviews:

  • "In a sea of mostly unremarkable rugged cameras, the Olympus Tough TG-4 sits at the top of food chain. It's incredibly well built, responsive, full-featured and, with a little work, produces excellent quality images for a small-sensored camera." - Digital Photograpy Review
  • "If the ability to actually get a picture of some shape or form over-rides the need for ultra high resolution and ultra high detail, then the latest Olympus TG-4 has got to be a near perfect contender for purchase"* - Photography Blog
  • "The Olympus Stylus TG-4 sets the new standard for "tough" digicams. Pushing the depth limits for a compact camera to 50ft; this is the toughest, most versatile camera yet." - Steve's Digicams

Great camera for the kids because they have to work really hard to break it!

I've got the TG-2 and it's fantastic, so I reckon the TG-4 would be good too.
Same price at JB Hifi - $381.65

I'll second this. Have had a TG-2 for a number of years, and coupled with the wide angle lens (bought separately) it makes for a great all purpose travel cam.

Fantastic price. I posted a deal on this camera a while ago and I still vouch for it! Mine went from 39m underwater to 5,300m above sea level at -15C.

  • Excellent camera. Can get the external case to take it deeper

meh, don't waste your money on Olympus Tough series, I bought one and took it to Venus Bay for 5 min submersion and it got soaked inside out, return to Olympus and they refused to fix, saying I let sand get into it thus voiding warranty.

    • +2

And did you let sand in? Obviously if you got sand in the seal then you can get water inside.
I had TG-3 and then TG-4 - from toughness perspective it is significantly better than others.
Had FT-4 before and had only problems with it - heavy lens fogging, focusing issues and one day just stopped working. Surprisingly on an ordinary summer day, no harsh environment - took picture, shut it off, and 5 min later could not turn it on…
The lens is best in its class.

      • when it leaked of course sand came in with water, battery door wasn't even touched when I was around the beach. Would you expect to spend hundred on these to be used around your backyard pool?

      • I've had FT-1 and FT-5. Never had issues with either but from some forums there's the occasional bad apple with leakage which should become apparent in within the warranty period. Lens fogging could be a hint that something is a amiss. Never taken them deep but often in the surf and in pool. Both have taken a pounding from being bashed about. Had TG-2. Also good. Ended up preferring the Panasonic because it's a bit more pocketable however the controls on the FT-5 are a bit miniscule when you're using ski gloves.

  • I grabbed one of these from "ryda-online" on ebay a couple of weeks ago, $343 with the 20% off ebay code… Nice little camera…

Be aware this is a 2+ year old model and there's rumours a "TG-5" will be released very soon… A lot of shops have the TG-4 listed as discontinued or unavailable (which also suggests a new version is on the way)..

BTW: you can add an adapter to the TG4 so you can use a 40.5mm filter or lens cap to protect the lens:

$19 – UV Filter >> http://www.ebay.com.au/itm/251317976314 (you can get these as low as $1, but it's probably worth spending the money on a decent one)

Pretty much my set up! it works beautifully.

  • Had one. Stepped aperture was a pain in the arse.
If you don't know what I'm talking about, you'll love it. If you do know, you'll hate it.
    Good price though.

    • f/2.0, f/2.8 or f/8.0 at the wide angle, and f/4.9, f/6.3 or f/18.0 at telephoto…

There are always compromises with rugged/tough cameras, lack of zoom and such… People that have a genuine NEED for a camera like this are usually happy to live with the limitations…

It comes about because of the periscope design, yes. It is needed to keep the lens compact and within the body for waterproofing.
I find my Olympus OM with underwater housing suits my needs better, though I can't really put it in my pocket.
        To each their own

  • Is this any better than SONY R100 MARK 3/4/5?

    • In terms of image quality? Not even close.

But by the time you add a waterproof housing to those they're gonna be twice the price.

  • JBHIFI have it at this $381 price also: (just in case anyone wants the black)

Got my Brother one for christmas, he loves it. takes it overseas, beaches etc and never had a problem.
Just remember to wash it in tap water after using at the beach or in the pool to prevent damage to the seals.
