Portable Laptop/Tablet/2 in 1 for Work?

Hi guys i've just graduated university and will be commencing a new job as an engineering intern and i want to buy a device as a celebration thing for myself and for use at work. I'm looking for something portable (looking at ipad 5, surface pro 4) but i also don't mind a bulkier laptop as well, say the dell XPS 15'' which is currently on sale. I really like the surface pro 4 but many of the reviews on youtube are saying that it's kind of buggy, not as refined as it can be and to wait for surface pro 5 before considering whether to get one or not. The dell XPS 15 is great, it has a nice screen and has either a gtx 960m or 1050 depending on which year model i buy and can be used for an at home laptop for other things such as games.
I want to hear what you guys think and what other devices you might recommend? Thanks!!!

  • Depends on what you want out of a device
Out in the field you probably want a proper full fledged laptop over a surface, but thats subjective to your line of work
I personally have a Lenovo E560, works okay for general work duties plus light gaming on its integrated discrere R7 360 AMD GPU
Full HD IPS screen and a DVD drive were all important features to me at the time of purchase

  • I have the Surface Book with discrete graphics and its an incredible machine. (6K screen)

I also have the Toshiba Z20T 3G/4G enabled (another 2 in 1) which is a great business 2in1. (2K screen)

And I have a 9.7 Ipad Pro, which replaced my Ipad Air. Used for basic note taking and media consumption for work.

If in engineering, the Surface Book is what will serve you best!

    • i like the surface book but i dont think the price is justisfied. I do however like ths surface laptop coming out next month!

  • Do you know what sort of software you would be using apart from the usual office suite? Just asking because I know some 3D software applications like AutoCAD or Revit that would benefit from using a discrete GPU. Surface Pro 4 doesn't have a discrete - its more for portability using basic office programs, but does have the handy pen for drawing.

I don't know what sort of stuff engineer interns do. So best to get something that would supplement your sort of work.
