What sort of phone does your boyfriend have - Samsung Android / Windows / LG / Xiaomi? What sort of activities do you think he wants to use a smart watch for? Would it be used more for sports / exercise or for work / emails / communications, etc?

  • We can't answer without knowing what phone it's going to be used with.

  • Hey guys, He's got an LG smartphone not sure which version its about a year old. It'd be great if I could find something that has an activity tracker, a heart rate monitor and notifications. Thank you

  • I got a Garmin forerunner for my birthday recently. So far so good. Primarily as an activity tracker but I also get phone notifications on my watch.

  • I'd probably look at a Garmin watch. I don't know enough about Android watches to recommend any.

  • asus zenwatch are pretty cool

  • If you don't mind ruining the "surprise" part of the present, why not ask your boyfriend what watch he'd like? I think a lot of people would be very particular about what smartwatch they'd like based on design, features and battery life.

If he wants battery life above all, Pebble watches (and ones that use e-ink display) are practically the only choice that'd last more than a week.
If he wants something with non-e ink screen that has the best battery life, Gear S3 I believe has the longest battery life.
If he wants apps above all, he'd have to look into Android Wear ones (like LG Sports you mentioned or something else).
If he wants something particular in terms of design, then it'd be very hard for me to guess what he'd want.

    • I did ask him at the begining but he didn't give away much. At the time I was looking at Nixon star wars watches. But he doesnt like leather belts or analogue watches.. So I have decided to get him a smart watch that could come in handy as he's trying to get fitter and bit of a techie too..
Battery life shouldnt be an issue as he charges his alta every day whilst in shower.. So what would come close to an LG sports?

      Thank you again everyone..

      • Nixon make a smart watch too.

      • I cannot say which watch would be the best, I think it's really subjective. What I personally recommend is ask your boyfriend with the list of watches that others and I have recommended. He might like something or might not even like anything on the list. All of them would be better or worse than one another in some way.

If you have to go for an Android Wear watch, I think like the ones that dbun1 suggested, look into watches that are made by watch brands. It's just that all the newer models made by smartphone makers are not available in Australia (at least the ones that fit your criteria, Zenwatch 3 doesn't have a HR monitor).

If you wouldn't mind looking into older models, what others suggested are still alright in my opinion. The chip that newer devices use probably wouldn't be too different from the older model. So Huawei Watch, LG Urbane, Moto 360 2nd Gen (it has a flat tire shaped screen). I do believe all those are available in Australia.

Since your boyfriend is using Alta already, why not look into Fitbit's smartwatch? Excuse me if I am wrong (never owned any Fitbit products), a lot of those health companies uses their own apps to track health related stuff. It might be less of a hassle for your boyfriend to get a Fitbit Blaze for that reason.

I am currently using Samsung Gear S3. It's something I can recommend. It has the best hardware, with the chip it uses (which doesn't always translate to best experience, but still). I'd personally recommend having a look at it, your nearest JB HiFi should have one (at least mine did).

  • I'm waiting until our telcos implement e-sim, I pretty much want a standalone smart watch.

  • Huawei Smartwatch

  • Thank you all. So I have narrowed it down to

    LG urbane 2nd edition LTE

    Samsung Gear S3

    Please help! :)
