Go a general light. You only need one. And it has a better beam angle. Just put it on a cord hanging down and add a shade.

Downlights look great in common areas. And as they don't hang down, they don't clutter the room. These factors don't come into play on a bedroom.

Kids rooms have fan light plus led down lights. Highly recommend a fan for cooling in summer, can't have the downlights on due to flickering shadow. Fan light is a bit dull, downlights for when the fan isn't on, or you want more light.
Main bedroom has oyster style lights and a fan without s light as the oyster lights are far enough away the shadow flickering isn't an issue.

I'm annoyed, we have bayonets at level 2 but screw types at level 1.

    • I have a mix in a small apartment!

      Have you considered adapters/converters?

      • +1

        People said it's not safe.
People who build houses with mix bulb are idiot

        • Really? I have had one for a while… Isn't it just like travel adapters for different power points?

What's not safe about it? Now I'm a bit worried.

        • I have felt your pain..

        • @John Kimble I guess its not safe because possibilities of electric fault then causing fire? Not sure about the technical part of that.

        • @airzone: thanks I should have just cancelled the house purchasing contract. Regretted to the max.

      • You are seriously recommending an adaptor for a general light?

        I'm kind of speechless now.

Edison Screw. Basically bayonet style anyway.

Unless you need to flood the room with light (in a bedroom?) wall mounted sconces can provide very comfortable light at eye level rather than shining on the top of your head,

  • I voted for downlights in our current home due to dusting/cleaning. Anyone remember those "trendy" birdsnest light fittings popular a few years ago - we had them in our previous bedroom and they required a leaf blower to blast the dust out of them (and all over everything else).

It would probably have been prudent to take the shade outside first, or use a vacuum cleaner instead.. lol

  • Fan mounted lights.

Both .. sort of. I have these ridiculous lights which are like large sized screw in normal light bulbs, but are recessed into the ceiling so they are next to impossible to unscrew when they blow.

I've got one oyster light in the bedroom, which is fine for the room size. Mix of down lights and oysters elsewhere.

    • Isn't oyster light just the cover with bayonet inside? (correct me if I am wrong)

      • Not in my case, we have those circular fluro tubes in ours.

        • I see.

        • @TurkishDelight: oyster lights describe the cover style/shape. Some have bayonet, some have flouro tubes, some have LEDs. we have LED style in the lounge/dining areas.

I have both the downlights are for illumination, the bayonets are for the Mormans and Jehovah's Witnesses.

  • Newish apartment with 50 plus downlights.

      Over loaded.

    • all individually switched?

      • Usually 4 to 6 per switch. Soon as we moved in I changed the majority of globes over to LEDs.

  • Built a new house that came with the bayonet fittings. It costed to much to get the builders to install downright. After we moved in we got a electrician to put led down lights. So much better.
