Woolworths Petrol with gift card and 4 cents off docket cheapest in my city.

I'm not sure why Woolworths never pushes out their petrol more. I live in the NT and always feel that Woolworths could be killing it for their petrol if they know what they could be doing with their marketing.

At the moment Woolworths is like $124.9 after 4 cents off, United Petrol they have a 6 cents off with an Automotive Group (AANT) which turns your 126.9 cents down to 120.9 but what even more strange with AANT I get obtain Wish Gift Cards (5% off and without paying postage) which then makes the Woolworths Petrol at around that $1.18 cents.

I'm not sure if this is the same nationwide but Coles, BP, Star Mart etc are all around that 133 to 129 cents and people still buy from them. I just think that Woolworths petrol could be killing it more and wouldn't have to do that BP deal and sell it off to them, if they just did things with their brand 5 years ago.

Is Woolworths Petrol your preferred petrol company or do you get even better deal? Just like to know?

Wish we could have a Costco up here, Our Government trying to block Dan Murphy's because they don't any liquor size limits bigger than 400m2. Our Government hates any new business coming to the Territory they want to look after small business first but the small business chargers an arm and a leg.

Its jumps up and down up here, 2 years ago it went to $1.70 but everyone started to protest for cheaper petrol, it went down to 99 cents at one stage but I just went to Cairns for Holidays and they are like $1.39 up there even some places up to $1.45 so at least our prices ain't too bad but could be better.

  • It's 113.9 for ulp in Sydney

I understand what OP is posting and I do use this strategy when the price works out better than competitors, but I don't think Woolworths/Coles honestly want the masses to be taking advantage of 5% off fuel. The retail margins in fuel sales aren't that large to begin with and the majority of the price paid goes to distributors as opposed to the store-front. The shop makes the money on $4 powerade and $3 chocolate bars that people buy.

Having this offer available allows them to secure loyalty for a small portion of the market that were already 'savvy' with their fuel savings, but their would be no benefit in openly advertising this strategy to the masses, as it would only result in losses for them. I don't know if a proper study has ever been conducted (not by ACA or TT), but I imagine the market is broken roughly into:

-10% of people that loyally attend only 1 or 2 independent/local servo's for the community relationship. (loyalty without discount)
-30% of people that seek the best price and compare discount vs non-discount vs independent chains. (discount seekers with no loyalty - have the fuel comparison apps installed/plan their purchase)
-30% of people that realise their tank is low and fill up at the nearest station regardless of price. (Aren't concerned about paying a few extra $ / Aren't organised enough to pre-plan)
-25% of people that have bought into a specific companies discount scheme and don't bother to check comparison prices. (WW / Coles / IGA loyalists that don't compare price after discount.)
-5% that take advantage of multiple discount schemes. Ie, 5% off gift cards + discount vouchers/schemes + small instore purchases for a discount that discounts the product purchased. (OzBargainers who don't buy the $4 powerade and $3 chocolates bars, so little opportunity for profit).

    • All our independent petrol station closed around 10 years ago but their have been 1 or 2 new ones that have shown up of late but more to do the the people looking for choice. The thing with Woolworth Petrol its never on my way from Home or Work so I tend to go to United Petrol as this is only like 1km away to where live and its the cheapest United since its fairly new compare to the others.

  • I agree with @apric101 regarding Woolworths not wanting the masses to use 5% off. Coles use to allow their gift cards and removed the options ages ago (from memory).

The funniest thing I find is people buying from shell(coles) when they are the first ones to jack up the prices (in melb anyways) even though right across the road the competitor 7/11, woolwroths, BP etc are still on the lower rate. The difference is often over 20c eg this week it went up from 115 to 139 and the local 7/11 across the road didn't change to the higher price for a full day (very rare) but people were still lining up at coles.

I used to exclusively shop and buy perol at coles/shell but discovered the prices have gone up a lot - the woolwrths in my area is now cheaper consistently and the prices at woolies for groceries are in line with coles.

Even though I have a staff discount at coles through a younger sibling who works there part time - i refuse to shop there for my weekly groceries as the fuel voucher is no longer worth it for me.
