Backpack for Uni - needs to hold laptop, power brick, two files, some stationery and the odd textbook

Hey guys I am looking for a backpack and just having a hard time figuring out what is good value.

I need something for uni which holds a surface pro, it's power brick, two two ring files, a textbook and my stationery.

I've seen lots of people on campus with Herschel bags etc but I don't see how they're worth $180

I really like the look of the vintage style rucksack bags, waxed canvas. They're about 30-50 on ebay from China, and the bigger brands sell for about $100+.

What are you guys using or would recommend for the amount of things I need to carry?

high sierra backpacks. Cheap. Functional. Durable. Value for money. Looks very 'meh' though.

    • You gonna post that as a deal or what?

If you have money to spend on something trendy, maybe a Rains backpack or Anello/Kanken if you're female. A generic laptop backpack, Jansport or suggestion above would also do the job. There was a Korean vintage backpack brand like leather but can't remember the name..

  • Jansport's Right Pack is a perennial classic and comes with lifetime warranty.

I really like the look of the vintage style rucksack bags, waxed canvas.

Check out the Fjallraven Rucksack No. 21. Bought one years ago, and it ironically cost less than the featureless Kanken at the time (I personally think they're also ugly and a bit of a fad). Everlane's dipped backpack is also solid choice.

  • I've had a timberland backpack since year three and it's still going strong. Get a good brand and your back will thank you. Screw those trendy looking canvas bags, they look extremely uncomfortable.

  • My previous bag, a Targus (no idea what model) lasted many years before the zip finally broke.
I just got a Samsonite Viz Air and it's great. It was on sale from Bagworld (got mine for $89), but I think the price has gone up.

Jansport Superbreak from rushfaster.com.au or Amazon

    • Plus one to this - mine survived years of university and is still going strong. They also have a lifetime warranty.

Amazon Basics <size> Laptop Backpack for $25.

  • I've had a Timbuk2 for five years and it is still going strong.

Everki is a good alternative if you're on a budget… The Swift model is $35 on eBay.

  • My Herschel Pop Quiz was only $70 from UrbanOutfitters. And you should try get the ebook version for the textbook! :)

  • I'm no backpack snob but carry exactly what you carry day to day (if not a bit more).

For what its worth I'm using this Adidas backpack: http://demandware.edgesuite.net/sits_pod20-adidas/dw/image/v…

IMO works very well with the pocket out the front which is like the Herschels and substantially cheaper.

Bottom and pocket (where I find are the first parts to go) are still intact.

To be honest though, most backpacks are pretty similar in terms of build quality. Of course there are a few exceptions but it basically comes down to your choice in style and 'features'

  • For Herschel, only buy on sales. Even then, though, Crumpler quality is superior.

I have both and my Crumpler has survived about 12 months of travels with a 2-3kg dslr, and is still fantastic.

My Herschel struggled with work and weekly language classes (2x textbooks), after about 9 months. Though, got it repaired at a local bag shop and it's been fine since.

Thanks everyone for your help. I ended up doing a bit more googling and found this https://www.dakine.com/campus-33l-backpack.html

Luckily coop were having a sale on them and I snagged one in the tabor colour for $36! Reviews are very favourable and it looks like it has everything I need… Space, compartments, durability, average looks but not bad for the money, not at all.

    • Great choice. Son is using it for uni for over a year now and is very happy with it. Got it cheap from sales on Surf Ski n dive online.

  • Would recommend using a waterproof backpack if you're always going to be carrying a laptop.
