Mobile Sim Only Plans What Are OzBargainers Using?

I'm currently on a TPG sim only plan which was once one of those $12.99 plans that was awesome, but is getting more expensive and on the vodaphone network which I find the coverage to be pretty bad and 1GB data isn't enough anymore.

just wondering what other ozbargainers are using? and can recommend.

been looking at the virgin $30 sim only plan that has 3Gb Data, has roll over for the data and data gift.

  • That's the one that I have, and it's pretty good.

I only use it in Adelaide and on major highways, so can't vouch for the coverage elsewhere - it's Optus, BTW.

  • Everyone uses their phone differently and have different requirements.

Personally, I'm using this $9.90/month Jeenee Mobile Plan for 6 months because I typically use around 1GB of data per month.

But, I don't take public transport so don't use my phone during my commute, and mostly read books during my lunch break. Other people would do differently, which would account for more data requirements.

    • haven't heard of jeenee mobile before…

but the $25 dollar sim only plan look ok.

I've been using the Optus 10gb/$40m plan for the last two year, plus if you're a student it's only $35.99

    • I use this this, can't complain.

    • same here. Bonus is that data is pooled across the family, so zero concerns about exceeding the (rather high) limit

  • just looked in woolworths mobile

3gb per month, unlimited text calls and sms. for $30 with data rollover each month. and on the telstra network. everyday rewards members get a further 10% off…

    seems pretty good

  • Lycamobile, credit never expires. I use about a dollars worth of credit per year.

    • +1

just looking at their website, cant see any plans that don't expire, everything I could see has 28 or 30 days

      • +2

That's only if you want to activate a plan, otherwise it is pay as you go. Personally when my credit runs out might switch to Aldi however I think their credit expires after 365 days.

This only suits me because I have WiFi everywhere and can make calls using a landline at home/school if I need.

29c flagfall seems expensive - is that for all calls?

        • @Its4me: Looks like it, never called anyone with them. There are definitely better options, I only need to send a text every few months so it suits me.

    • +1

Reminds me of my CMobile Red - Supposedly $$20 per year type thing (now gone up to $50). But the credit never expired after 14 months (only used $10 in a year for my Smartwatch).

    Kogan!

  • I use Woolworths, better coverage than optus imo

Did you consider the "monthly change of provider plans"? it's a lot of savings but there's a little hassle involved. =)

    • it's for myself and my wife… I guess it wouldn't be too difficult but would rather not if the savings are not too great

I've heard a lot of people on ozbargain do it… what is the real $$ saving though?

      • +2

        20 to 30 bucks a month.

https://www.koganmobile.com.au/plans/ - this one example from Kogan. You can get the XL Plan for $4.90(normal RRp $49.90)

then buy a an Optus or Woolies or Vodafone prepaid starter kit from COles or Woolies which usually are half price.

Just switch and repeat and remember to tick the box of "port your number" to retain your number of course.

        Hope this helps.

  • For the past few months I've with Optus on the $35 unlimited with 10GB and unmetered music streaming. The only problem is they've been chargng me $38.06 instead. I've been meaning to give them a call to sort this out but dread their call centre. This was a popular deal on here a few months ago, is anyone in the same situation?

    • Yeah a few of my past bills were slightly above the 35.99 (student promo). I'm looking to switch to probably Kogan as I can't be bothered chasing up a few cents but it was a bit strange I got slugged an extra few cents. My 12 month contract is nearly up.

When I was overseas a few months ago I got slugged for receiving an SMS to do banking. I thought receiving is free, sending incurs cost in which I never did. Also I hate their auto top up of $10 for 1GB data if you go over. I got the SMS for going over one time 2 days after I went over and got slugged an extra $10. The month (28 billing cycle) was literally the next day.

      • I think in your case it may be the credit card surcharge? In my case it's a few dollars though…

BTW, receiving SMS or calls when roaming is not free.

        • Its direct debit. But yeah apparently roaming isn't not free on my promotion for whatever reason, yet on their website when you look at charges from a specific country it says receiving is free (I was in Thailand and Malaysia which are Zone 1). I'm not gonna bother arguing, I'm already switching since my contract is up.

But whatever, it was 50cents at the most. I'd rather save more by switching to an equivalent plan at roughly half the cost from other MVNO. I barely even use the 10GB so I can cut down from that.

  • I use this plan with Kogan

Been using Yomojo on the $30/month for 6GB plan, it uses the Optus network and has been great so far

    • wow that sounds impressive

      • I'm on the same, never had an issue. Unlimited text/calls and 6gb of data.

        Highly recommend them.

  • Vodafone $55/18Gb data.

    • the cost per month is getting a bit too high for that one… I do have wifi in most places like work and home just a bit more freedom when It comes to train commuting and browsing

      • +1

I don't have the internet at home so it makes sense for me.

        • You do know you cna get 14gb with kogan for less than half of that?

  • Telstra $45/m for 15gb data

    • Hmm might get this when I get back.

Is it an old offer or still valid?

      • not 100% sure. someone posted on ozb they were doing the $70 BYO plan for $50 a month for existing customers that wanted to recontract (not advertised). So $50 - 10% (telstra alumni discount)

  • Vaya unlimited talk and text. 1 GB data. Prepaid for a year @ ~ $9 a month. Perfect for my needs.

  • Virgin mobile… 17gig for 40.something after 10% velocity rewards discount and cash back.

  • +1

Aldi seems to have a $35 month for 6gb with data rollover but it is prepaid. They use Telstra also?

Can you automatically top up prepaid each month, to make it more like postpaid? Eg direct debit/credit card rather than having to login or buy recharges each month?

  • +1

Like Gandalf I use the Aldimobile Pre-paid with auto-topup enabled. It uses Telstra 4G and after a few years using it I haven't found anything that suits me better. Coverage is very good, performance is good and luckily I haven't been hit by any of the outages.

We are using the $25/month unlimited calls/sms 2.25GB data with rollover for wife and $35/month unlimited calls etc with 6GB data (again with rollover) for higher usage.

You can add data packs (not economical unless an emergency) if you burn through the data.

  • Virgin. I'm on an old plan, $19/month for 2.25GB and $450 calls & text. I like being able to walk into a store for most issues, including a replacement SIM if I change handsets, and have had good experience with their call center. Free voicemail access, and free Virgin to Virgin is also a plus.

  • optus BYO $70

unlimited calls and texts/ MMS and 25gb of data, so far i have almost come to crackign the 25gb in one month but yeah i prefer to not pay optus the extra 10 dollars for the 1 gb.

  • I've got the PennySIM $0/month plan and the TPG $1/month plans (both discontinued).

Anyone know if there's anything similarly priced to PennySIM around now (12c/min calls, no flagfall, 3c/Mb data)? I seem to have 'lost' the SIM at home somewhere and MNF (PennySIM) aren't very helpful.

  • I'm on Aldi's 1 year plan, $250 for 42GB, unlimited calls and texts

  • Using a dual sim phone. My main is $60/3months unlimited calls/txt with 1gb data. But have an apk I made to get unlimited 3G/4G data which I can also tether to other devices via hotspotting. (The apk is for personal use only)
