Insurance for second hand car purchase tomorrow

I need some ozbargain help/advice, please.

So I'm buying a $15,000 second hand car tomorrow and driving it home via a 10 hour trip over two days.

Last time I bought a car I'm almost certain AAMI or another insurer gave me complementary insurance for around 30 days when buying the car. I can't find a similar deal anywhere.

Does anyone have some suggestions?

Thanks :)

the time it took you to make this post you could have made enquiries with coles insurance, progressive direct or any of the other 10+ insurance companies on line.

given that you haven't provided your age, the type of vehicle, where you live and what sort of insurance you are after - third party or comprehensive - makes it extremely difficult to provide any suggestions..

Do you mean 30 day cooling off period? I have only been with nrma and i'm sure they have a cooling off period .if you're not happy with the cover you can cancel it within a certain time. At least you will be covered if something does happen on the way home. It's a bit late now i recommend you sign up with a online quote if you're driving tomorrow. Don't take the risk.

  • Are you referring to cover notes? Apparently it is no longer done in Australia.

Ok just got off the phone to AAMI. they have given me a 14 day complimentary comprehensive insurance which isn't binding. If I want to take the cover up for the year I have to pay within 14 days otherwise my cover ends after 14 days and no charges need to be made. Good deal.

amazing. you could have saved all that typing for the original post if you had called them first.

    • Read the fine print. Usually you will have to pay the premium for the year if you have to make a claim.

Meh, you don't need insurance. What's the worst that could happen?

do you want us to drive it home for you as well?

  • You can do this with lots of insurers on-line. When you get to the payment screen, just select 'bpay' and you have some time to pay either 14 or 30 days.

Your policy lapses, if you don't pay by the deadline, but you can still make a claim by paying the premium …

    • Thanks mate. Exactly what I was after

    • It doesn't lapse if gets cancelled
Which you will need to disclose everytime you apply for insurance possibly affecting premium

      • Huh? Where's you get that from?

      • No. You haven't paid. So it's as if you've never actually purchased the insurance cover to begin with.

  • Yes, call the insurance company you like (say RACQ) and ask for a cover note.
A few years back I called them while I was at the car yard picking the vehicle up. You are then covered straight away.

Cool. Thanks heaps. That's essentially what I got. Nice to get a few responses that aren't just patronising!
