  • Sorry for the noob questions, but do these receivers make much of a difference to sound quality?
I have my speakers connected to XB1S (4K player) via optical out.

    • Are your speakers amplified?

It all depends on your current amp.

This is a 7.2 receiver, if you are running only 2 speakers unless you plan to get more it's probably a waste.

      • I've got the Logitech Z something. 5.1 speakers with sub woofer.

        • My understanding it the optical route doesn't allow for 7.1 and has compressed audio as well. In general HDMI is better (though I understand the xbox has problems there too).

Thus this receiver, with the various full audio stream options, would be massively better.

Although Logitech speakers are probably the thing to throw out first.

This would be a ridiculous level of overkill for Logitech speakers IMO.

Probably get a lot more for your money if you replaced the speakers instead.

          @eecan:
Logitech speakers are active, they don't need receivers.

As far as querying whether a Logitech speaker set to a dedicated receiver is a noticeable sound improvement… That's probably not worth bothering to explain without starting a shit fight.

        • You've got z5400 z5500, or z906 which are all excellent in a small room. I own first two.
They're not HiFi nor latest and greatest but if you're happy with your set, there's no need to change. Most important components of surround sound soundtrack is in the 5.1 tracks that you've already got using built-in DTS and Dolby decoder.

        • So you have active 5.1 speakers.

If you got this receiver you would need to also buy new speakers.

The Logitech gear is pretty good for use on an XBOX for gaming IMHO. I wouldn't spend $1000+ on a receiver and speakers simply for use on the XBOX unless you mainly use it to play movies not games….

  • picked one up! good price with local warranty. cheers op

  • Many thanks for pointing out this deal OP, I've picked one up. My old Onkyo DS595 has been feeling a bit long in the tooth in recent years and I was going to wait for the EOFY sales to start looking for an update. No need to wait now. :)

  • Hi everyone, my name is Bradd I'm the store Manager of Todds Hifi, these are a great amp, and I have heard from Yamaha that the new 683 coming out later this year will really be nothing new in terms of features. We still have some stock left, but we have more turning up next week. Get your orders in now! Thanks - Bradd

  • well after some reasearch and these amps getting the dolby vision update im getting 1.
ordering tomorrow morning. tried on sat but they had already closed lol

    • Enjoy.

I am loving mine. It's my first HDMI receiver.

Run the XBOX, Foxtel, Fetch, CD player and PC through it.

I'd like it have a bit more grunt, but overall a nice bit of kit at a pretty nice price.

Spotify is pretty sweet. Also using the IPAD to control the receiver is nice too..

      • yep just got delivery unpacking tonight. i didnt know i could use phone/tablet to control it thats awesome
now i can sell my denon 510bt amp that wasnt compatible with the LG oled

        • +1

Just download the Yamaha control app from the app store. It's free and works great.

  • yep i have now its a pretty good app actually
took me a while to work out how to get the PC doing HDR through it but got that sorted to now

    • I actually find some inputs like USB and bluetooth cant be selected using the controls on the unit itself - only on the app (and maybe remote but I dont use remote)

      • The app is definitely the best way to control the amps, physical remotes are limited to how many buttons they can have, touch screen software interfaces can forever be updated and made to be better and more user intuitive.
