Cards with Flights Attached?

I often see peoe on here using credit card free flights.
I only use a debit/visa card.
It seems I'm not getting the best deal or making the best of an opportunity.
Flights in Australia aren't that budget priced, so how do I use what I normally would spend anyway to earn a free flight?
I would normally buy food, pay bills, pay for things anyway.

Thanks in advance.

  • Get a credit card with a reward point system.. Use as it as you would your debit card. Ensure to pay all of it off by the due date.

    • Reward points on spend. Wondering if my mortgage can be paid through that way?

        Mortgage payments most likely not.

  • I suggest going with AMEX velocity platinum card for your purchases like groceries, bills, fuels, etc and earn velocity points. But this is not the point.
Amex velocity platinum card offering great deal through referral program
    What you get:
    1. 1 Free Domestic return flight on Virgin - value min 250 aud and for some even around 350+
    2. 100,000 velocity bonus points when you spend 1500 aud in first 3 months in total
many ozb members cell 100k points for 1000 aud in classified section but I prefer not to sell, as it has great value while redeeming for rewards seat. I just booked virgin bne to cairns return for 22k and yet have 80k points still remaining along with my one free domestic return unused which i kept for special occassion
    3. 2 virgin lounge passes

    What you loose:
    375 aud as annual fee

    Do you really loose?
No you are getting more than four times of your annual fee as benefits and moreover after using your points, you can do product change to zero annual fee card (amex velocity escape) and get your annual fee refunded on pro-rata basis.

    Good Luck…

I would avoid the Amex Velocity if I was the OP. You are paying $375 for a return domestic flight (which doesn't include Perth last time I checked). That is really BAD value and the OP will be forced into taking that flight because they paid $375 for it.

If you are chasing Velocity or Qantas sign-up points then there are much easier and zero-fee ways of getting over 100k.

All in all, I think you gave this recommendation to push your referral link that you PMed to the OP. OP, do your research, this is not the card for you.

      • I completely dis-agree with you, your comments contradicts your own comments in below link.
        https://www.ozbargain.com.au/node/311056
OP will not be forced into taking that flight - He can sell the flight at min $250 at classified section here, if perth is the only city he want to use the flights for.
Moreover you suggested to sell the 100K points for $1000 - easily at above link

So the math is simple 1000+250+2 lounge access - $375 = 4 times +ve net value

i have been fuelling up in BP since a year and use velocity cards for points - the max i have reached is 2k before i got this card.

"zero-fee ways of getting over 100k" - let us know I too wanna take that way, i want more points aswell. thats what ozb is far - sharing and caring..

OP can either product change to zero fee card after 6 months or cancel the card, in both scenario you can get your fee back on pro-rata basis

As OP is concerned, I just suggested not forced - Its always good to do research as i did mine before taking this card. At below link there are many experienced ozbargainers(I am just a newbie) who have given thumbs up for this card, many of them are using this card for years and some just for this offer like me.

Good luck and happy ozbargaining… :)

        • Sorry, I don't think I was clear before. We can all only apply for a limited number of credit cards due to credit checks reducing our credit rating. Let's call it 1 credit card application for every 2 months, to be safe.

I would strongly advise the OP against wasting one of their credit card application windows to spend $375 for 100k points + a return domestic flight. Not to mention this then excludes the OP from any further Amex offers for at least the next 12 months. It's all about knowing the cycles and making best use of sign-up bonuses in the right months. Using the OP's Amex slot would throw away the upcoming Amex deals of 100k points with no annual fee.

Besides, there are other deals at the moment with far better than "4 times +ve net value", in fact infinite net value if that's how you value your sign-up bonuses. No secrets here, they are listed on OzBargain like the ANZ Black and St George Amplify would net you 135k QFF points (can be sold for 1.1c each, i.e. more than VFF) and they have zero annual fee. A far better proposition for the OP to spend his 'June 2017 credit card application allowance' on while waiting for the July killer Amex offer

The Amex Velocity is value in itself, but compared to other credit card offers at the moment, and with a limited number of applications made available to us all, I would recommend the OP stay away from Amex Velocity for the moment

It does include Perth, I've redeemed flights twice now - one PER-MEL return and once PER-BNE return, both during the school holidays. Well worth the fee!

Thankyou for the comments, I appreciate all the feedback and time taken to reply and respond.
I am open to all suggestions and hints and advice. Thanks.

  • Virgin Flyer C Card you get a $129 voucher to go towards flights. You used to get a buy one get one free, but they changed it to the voucher. I think the Premium version of the card you get 2 virgin lounge passes as well..
