Need Suggestions on Everything about Gym - Memberships, Clothing and Accessories etc

Hi
I am planning to starting working out on my body finally. I searched this forum but couldnt find active deals about Gym memberships, Gym Clothing (compression tops and shorts) gym shoes, Protein powders( I did see a few sample deals for this one) and related stuff.
Seeking recommendations/deals to help me get hooked on to a decent gym in Melbourne.

Ta!

Edit - I am an intermediate level gymmer with a drought for last 4 years now

  • you do realise protein is for pros. else it makes you more tubby. most newbies dont last more than 2 months. seen it too often. best thing is weight gloves early, everythiing else make the cutoff quitter threshold then buy

My recommendation is the only thing you need right now is a gym membership. Protein powder and a compression top isn't going to do jack to help you get jacked ;) (well at least in the beginning anyway. Supps have their place but getting your diet sorted is the first big step).

Eat well and lift heavy. Start with some heavy compound lifts and throw in lighter accessory work. Worry about protein and compression tops in 12 months.

Sounds like a rather materialistic approach considering how your health is entirely personal. Nonetheless, there was a 2XU deal recently https://www.ozbargain.com.au/node/307208, Bulk nutrients sells decent protein powder. There are lots of exercises you can do to tone your body prior to starting gym. The key is being consistent with your schedule and eating well.

    • honestly, I am too lazy to take my ass to gym … the materialistic things serve as motivation for me to start going regularly..

      • Once you've reached a point where you're happy with your body, preserving it and making gains will be your primary motivation.

I couldn't agree more, I'd bet $50 that it's all gathering dust in a few months because OP is going about this all ass-about.

      • Yep, though it would be in the hundreds with the protein. Takes months before developing the strength to start protein + a balanced diet is all you need for a fit body.

You do not need fancy compression clothing and fancy shoes. Just buy regular old shirts, tops and shoes and join a gym. I wouldn't worry about protein powders at this stage. The most important thing at this stage is getting into a routine of going to the gym.

  • Don't get distracted by the opposite sex when in the gym. You may be tempted to throw on more weights then you can lift to impress the other but it most likely cause harmful injury to your self and pride when you fail to lift.

Make sure you choose a gym that is either close to work or close to your home. The further out of your way the gym is, the less likely you'll be to go there. As others have said, your first priority is choosing your gym, signing up and then building a regular routine to go to the gym at the right frequency for you.

  • If new gear and suppliments is all that's going to motivate you to go to the gym then I can see it being a temporary thing at best.

Have you given much thought to what you're actually going to do at the gym or do you think that if you buy new gym gear, suppliments and a membership that everything will take care of itself?

If you're just going for straight up weight loss, then I'd be looking at diet before you even set foot in a gym.

Everyone know that the more money you spend on exercise equipment, clothing, and accessories, the better results you get :)
I know someone that lost weight just by spending money on an expensive exercise watch

  • if you are female get yourself properly fitted supportive sports bras and good shoes; everything else can be "standard". Get something that doesn't constrict movement, breathes and ensure you can keep cool. Singlets aren't, necessarily, the most flattering wear but they allow you to sweat properly.

I recommend going to classes, at least at first. Les Mills have a great wide variety of classes. Find a gym with a list and ask them what they are. I find that in a 1-hour session of Body Pump (lifting weights with music; different tracks for different areas of the body), I achieve much more than I would have in 1.5 hours of being in the gym on my own, trying to figure out what to do. Go and tell the instructor before you start that you're new, and they'll give tips. Then watch everyone else. Lots of fun.

I will say, I never expected them to be fun, but my sister dragged me along, and now I like it. Men and women join the classes near me. Worth a shot at least.

Most gyms have 1 week free trial periods (including classes), and https://www.localfitness.com.au/ has cheap 4-week memberships for a wide range of local gyms. I like well-equipped local community gyms more than big corporate monsters.

    • +1 on the classes. Get in, do the work out, have the shower and then go. However, listen to your body and make sure you don't overdo it and injure yourself.

  • Thank you all for the suggestions.
Anyone aware of deals for gym memberships apart from the link above?
