  • Does anyone know if this is better then those DGTEC 7" Android Tablet TB512-16G from OZbargin a year ago?

  • +5

oh why oh why did i go for another coffee, and not refresh my ozb page for the 1000th time today.. i would of bought it, and i dont need it, yet i feel compelled to whinge about it, and i feel devastated!!!

    • Ha ha, in the time I took to ask whether the tablet would be good as an ebook reader I could no longer check out my purchase. Maybe we'll see another lot in the next day or two?

      • Lets have faith brother..

  • Anyone know where shipment is coming from?

    • +2

      Sydney.

      • Thanks PT

  • +2

    Missed again! OMG!

    • +2

Refresh the link tomorrow they may be adding more stock each day. Pretty sure Telstra was left with more than 182 of these tablets that were superseded before they even came out - they were giving them away at one point.

  • +2

Don't forget to activate the free copy of Office 365 before blowing away Windows 8.1

    • How,is it through settings?

    • Can you sell it? Is it a serial number on a card or pre-installed?

    • +1

      Last page on start menu.

      No can't sell it.

Edit: 13 months of Office 365 and 1tb of OneDrive activated.

      • +2

The option to activate it is still there for me after the Win10 Upgrade.

EDIT: Office 365 activated - now 'resetting' the Windows 10 install to give it a fresh start.

  • +1

Alot more brodens today who bought 5?

  • Anyone who has one want to share a mini review of their impressions?
    Would like to hear .

      Pros:
      * Quad core atom is actually pretty capable - no problem for casual use / video playback. Go easy on the multi-tasking.
      * Screen is pretty decent - Reasonable pixel density, Colours/Viewing angles alright (IPS), capacitive touch. I might run my calibrator on it for a laugh some time.
      * Office 365 for 12 months is a nice bonus.
      * MicroSD Card could be handy for media consumption - this could be nice to have on a long flight.
      * Has Bluetooth (apparently some models don't).
      * Standard 5V/2A charging - easy to power off a USB bank. I may actually use mine for data logging some time.
      * Build quality is surprisingly alright - it's not up to Apple standard but it's better than you'd expect for the price.

      Cons:
      * 1GB RAM / 32GB storage is a bit light so temper your expectations.
      * The speaker is pretty ordinary.
      * Windows with touch only can be a bit frustrating/challenging even as a seasoned Windows user. I think my mum would struggle to do anything on it! Using this makes you appreciate how intuitive IOS / Android are.
      * The screen and battery aren't much different to my phone but the device is much more chunky!

I don't regret buying it - but I'm not sure how much use it'll get.

      • Excellent, well it sounds like it would be suited as a simple media consumer with the addition of an sd card for movies on the go - reasonable screen makes it a little different from other cheap tablets but RAM limitations would hamper it from too much else Cheers

  • +1

Oh my god missed again eBay app didn't alert me despite the fact I've been watching it?

  • -4

    Mine has massive screen bleeding:(

  • +6

In case it helps someone else - I was having problems with the WiFi dropping out when using Bluetooth.
These don't support 5hz WiFi so that trick was off the table.

I found changing the "bLeisurePs" registry key as described here: http://bhtooefr.org/blog/2014/12/27/winbook-tw700-first-impr…
    Solved it for me.

  • +1

Xbox One streaming works great with this. Regret not buying 2 for a backup.

  • OK got mine, woo-hoo. Charging now.
What are you guys using for browsers and anti-virus? Considering that its a full Windows build with only 1GB of RAM.

    • Nice little tablet for the money. Used it as a Kindle e book reader and can't fault it

Only gripe is that it's a little heavy

    • Windows 10 come with antivirus out of the box.

    • -1

I disabled my AV, uses too much memory.

      • Yeah I am watching that massive 1GB keep hitting the wall in task manager lol
What a shame that they didnt spend the extra few dollars and have a least 2GB

        • Windows will use up a lot of your available memory by design, actually.

        • -4

          @eug:

          Thats wrong.

It manages with the ram you give it as it has a pagefile.

I'm sitting here with 16GB of ram and 20% used in Windows 10.

The only way you can be technically right is that nothing is unloaded from memory until its needed meaning you will generally have a large cache.

        • @samfisher5986: Did you read the article? It will increase the longer you have your computer running.

I'm sitting here with 16GB of ram and 20% used in Windows 10.

I'm sitting here with 1GB on my HP tablet with 84% used in Windows 10. That's 795MB.

Why is your computer using 20% of 16GB, which is 3.2GB instead? Is it because … Windows will use up a lot of your available memory by design?

        • -1

          @eug:

          No.

Windows has a set amount of memory it wants to use.

If you don't have enough, it will "manage it"

Any other ram is just cached until needed.

        • -2

          @eug:

The link you posted explains it, Superfetch does not do what you are describing (use all the ram you have available)

8GB of ram and 128GB of ram will use the same amount of memory in Windows.

Cache is separate and is explained in your article, maybe you should read what you post!

        • @samfisher5986:

Superfetch does not do what you are describing (use all the ram you have available)

          Who said that?

          Cache is separate

So you're saying Superfetch's cache does not use your system memory?

        • -2

          @eug:

It doesn't use a significant amount of your 16GB+ no.

As I said, unless you don't enough memory, adding more memory will simply give you additional free memory.

        • @samfisher5986:

It doesn't use a significant amount of your 16GB+ no.

So now you're saying it isn't separate, and it does use your system memory?

As I said, unless you don't enough memory, adding more memory will simply give you additional free memory.

What does that have to do with what the OP and me talking about?

I said Windows uses a lot of your available memory by design, i.e. Superfetch.

You said that was wrong and that Windows has a set amount of memory that it will use - it doesn't matter if you have 8GB or 12GB RAM, Windows will always use the same set amount of memory.

That totally goes against how Superfetch works. If you have fast unused RAM available, there's no point leaving all of it empty.

I linked two web pages describing how Superfetch works - it caches programs it thinks you use often into your system memory.

You then said Superfetch does not do what I said, and mentioned it does not use all the ram you have available. But I never said it will use all the RAM you have available.

You also said cache is separate to system memory (reaffirmed by saying that Windows will use a set amount of RAM regardless of whether you have 8GB or 12GB), and that I should read what I posted.

You then said Superfetch does use system memory, just an insignificant amount of your 16GB, and that any additional RAM (over what threshold?) just sits there unused as Windows will only use a set amount of memory.

So what are you actually saying? Are you saying that Superfetch memory usage is not part of Windows' memory footprint, even though it's part of the OS? Or that Superfetch doesn't use much memory? If you read the links I posted, you would understand that how much it caches depends on what programs you use frequently, so your base memory footprint can be completely different to mine.

Keep in mind we were talking about a tablet with 1GB RAM, not your desktop with 16GB RAM. Context is important to any discussion.

        • -1

          @eug:

          You misunderstand completely, read slowly.

Windows has a set amount of memory it would like to use if its available.

If it can't use that much memory, it will use less and offload a lot more to the pagefile.

          Its really that simple.

This logic applies to 1GB, 4GB, 16GB and 128GB of memory.

        • @samfisher5986:

Windows has a set amount of memory it would like to use if its available.

So you don't consider Superfetch part of Windows' memory footprint, even though it is part of Windows and runs automatically?

        • -2

          @eug:

I'm not sure if you are reading what I'm saying, but I'll reply anyway.

Superfetch is one of the many services of Windows that can be reduced if there is not enough memory.

          What is your point?

        • @samfisher5986:

It looks like you do not understand what Superfetch does. All the details are in the pages I linked to above. Windows does not use a set amount of memory on all systems. It depends on what apps you've used in the past.

        • -1

          @eug:

I never said windows uses the same amount on all systems.

For each system, there is an amount of memory you need before there is no benefit to Windows, only applications, Photoshop etc.

So adding memory above that amount is pointless unless you need it for other applications.

Windows does not look at your 32GB of ram and do anything at all except not offload used ram until its needed for something else (cache)

        • @samfisher5986:

For each system, there is an amount of memory you need before there is no benefit to Windows, only applications, Photoshop etc.
So adding memory above that amount is pointless unless you need it for other applications.

That was absolutely true in the old pre-Vista days, ten years ago. XP wasn't great at resource management - the extra RAM would just sit there mostly unused, unless an application needs it. Then Superfetch came about.

Windows does not look at your 32GB of ram and do anything at all except not offload used ram until its needed for something else (cache)

The first part of your sentence isn't clear (double negative?), but the second part refers to a cache, which is what Superfetch is.

Windows (post-XP) will use your available unused RAM to cache programs that it thinks you'll use. Having high-speed memory simply sit there unused is a waste of resources.

Hence my original statement - Windows is designed to use up a lot of your available memory - it speeds up app loading in most cases.

Remember that in the thread you replied to, the OP was talking about high memory usage figures in task manager. If you run an app that requires memory, the cache will be dropped and memory will be made available to the app.

        • -2

          @eug:

          You are completely wrong.

Superfetch is about loading small applications into memory when it predicts you might need it, it doesn't use much memory to do this.

Cache in Windows literally just means if you use 2GB of memory and then close it, it will stay in memory until you open something that needs that memory space.

You really need to do more research so you don't make simple mistakes like this.

        • @samfisher5986:

OK, whatever makes you happy. You're pretty good at deflecting and cherry-picking. :)

        • -2

          @eug:

Says the person who said "Windows will use up a lot of your available memory by design"

  • How do you guys update to Windows 10 ???

    • Read the previous comments.

  • Received mine yesterday. There's a vertical line on the display going from top to bottom (not a physical scratch).

    https://1drv.ms/f/s!AlH7YpzZFIoIg4Y_lYbRO9P0B65mOw

Anyone else with the same issue?

I've sent a message to Telstra via ebay.

    • They are giving a refund.

    • I am sorry to hear that, just bad luck I guess. Maybe, just maybe if you keep checking with eBay they will release some more.

  • Got the tablet yesterday, happy for the price paid, 7" is definitely a nice size for web browsing / youtube.

  • If anyone has one they do not want anymore I'm happy to buy it from you! So sad I missed out

  • eBay is saying temporarily sold out sometimes and the item has ended other times hope they have more what a bargain for having Office on the train 🚂

  • Guys, how to upgrade this tablet to windows 10? I am not sure how to get started. Thanks

    • +1

      Link has already been provided.

  • Anyone found the battery drains fairly quickly on standby when not in use, battery went down 12% in 8 hours overnight, anyone know how to correct this?

    • +1

      mine seems Ok

      • do you have yours on wifi when on standby? Might trying turning off wifi when not in use, however that would be annoying.

    • Yes, the battery does suck on these. One thing under Windows 10 that seems to be working for me - click on the battery icon in taskbar and select "battery saver" option

      • Yep, turning off WiFi while on sleep mode seems to help a little.

        • I also flashed the bios to the latest one - even though it's a year or so old I couldn't tell the current version so updated just to make sure

        • -1

@bdl: At the price paid, will live with its flaws, will only be using it for general web browsing/youtube.

  • Trying to decide whether to make the jump to W10 or not given these comments: https://www.ozbargain.com.au/node/310200#comment-4740609
A question to those that have, if you know: can we go back to the original loaded W8.1 version by using recovery IE does it load from a separate partition?

    • It does have the built-in rollback option for the first few weeks at least. I think there is a recovery partition too (I was courageous/foolish enough to just blow it all away).

      • You formatted the whole drive and fresh installed?
How about drivers such as the touchscreen? Did you have any trouble?

        • +1

No problem at all - I couldn't get touch working in the Windows installer but launching the installer from within Windows was no problem (and then telling it to wipe everything and do a clean install).

On first boot there was no Wifi and generic graphics drivers - but a reboot solved that.

I think you'd need to use a USB OTG Keyboard/Mouse to be able to install from the Windows installer 'raw'

      • MS changed the rollback option from 30 days to 10 days, so don't take too long to decide! There's a way to extend it but it's quite few steps long.

    • I updated to Windows 10 and then back to Windows 8.1, because it was slow on Win 10. but Win 8.1 is difficult to use (horrible keyboard, close apps etc) and then again updated to Windows 10. It is difficult to decide which is worse.Edge is better than IE 10.
I never thought Windows will be so poorly designed on tablets. Battery life is not good. Even in sleep mode it looses 60% battery in night (WiFi on). Now I am getting update error message - some time difference issue.

I will use it for Kindle/PDF reader only and web browsing.

      • Yes I had to go into settings and manually update the tim despite correct time zone shown - not sure why.

Ahh now i cant decide to update or not

        • Use it for a week on Win 8.1, then update it and use it for another week, then roll back if not satisfied?

After the Win10 update completes, it still runs a number of background tasks after the desktop appears. You can watch CPU utilization in task manager while that happens. It'll be understandably sluggish during that time.

        • @eug:
          Right makes sense.
do you know after we update via the link a page back whether the 8.1 recovery image is still 8.1 afterwards? Ie with all the touchpad drivers etc If you get my drift :p

        • +1

@King Tightarse: I haven't tried it myself, but pretty sure it would be. The upgrade just stores a copy of the currently-running 8.1 in the Windows.old folder, so it'll roll back to that.

      • Agree, Win 10 usability is better. But slow. Win 8 on not intuitive, its hard to use.
I plan to stay with Win 10 at the expense of slower performance.
I mainly using this for youtube and very happy with the screen quality and video playback.
