Air Asia Mega Sale - Worth Getting up for?

Received an email about the Air Asia Mega Sale today; was wondering if anyone here had looked at it last time they put one on? What are the deals like? How restrictive are the travel periods? Thinking about getting up early early to hop on and have a look if it's something special

depends what you are looking for and what you are expecting to get out of it.
refer last year's sale for general ideas of what the sale will be: https://www.ozbargain.com.au/node/252605

flights are usually 6-18 months from the sale

don't expect to book during holidays. do expect it to be as cheap as you can get it - particularly the intra-asia flights.

go in with a clear idea of what you want, be prepared to buy immediately, eg Syd to KL to Phuket to bangkok to siem reap to KL to syd, etc (or whatever destinations tickle you)
pay with paypal in AUD, (or sometimes can be cheaper with 28degrees card, etc if flight starts in foreign country)

decide if you want food and bags an seat selection

if you have never used airasia before:
    1) ensure you and your traveling companions are set up in the profile and friends section, for quick selection
    2) do a dummy booking right through to payment page (abort at putting in cr card info) so you are familiar with their booking engine
    3) open a session of chrome, firefox, internet explore and also the app. do not use multiple tabs within one browser.

  • I didn't get up at 3am last time, but I knew exactly what flights I wanted and the dates - booked them in the morning.
Great for intra-asia flights as the previous commenter mentioned - especially if it's KL related obviously.
I got about 5 or 6 flights for 3 people, each only about $20 !!!! Mainly flights from Singapore to Malaysia, Malaysian Borneo etc.
I got a Melbourne to KL flight for 200 return or something similar.

TLDR; the prices are super good. just make sure you know what you are looking for.

    • I agree. Asia will be awake 2am AEST, but asleep at 8am AEST Sunday. Sunday eve always bad from memory.
Preparation and flexibility are the key.

  • Based on last year's sale, I think this will only be for 2018. I wonder if there's going to be any offers for immediate term such as July/August 2017?

  • Slightly offtopic, but when completing my profile it asks for passport details. Not flying into December and will have new details by then. Unfortunately I can't leave the field blank, so just put in dummy text. Surely I will be able to change it after the booking?

yep, sure can. Online check in you have to input real details. Or check in at airport. So no sweat!

      • Thanks Woody :)

  • 390 THB Bangkok to Chiang Mai or vice versa is pretty good! = approx $A32 return plus booking fee.

  • SO worth it. I booked an insane holiday over 4 countries and 10 cities with my boyfriend two yrs back with this sale and paid for some flights as little as $11. Can not recommend it enough. Would suggest blocking out enough time to accurately plan out your route when it goes on sale - or alternatively plan in advance. However when it gets released you will no doubt have to change some things around so be prepared for this.
