Avanti Corsa SL 2016 Full Carbon Shimano 105 5800 Road Bike for $999.95 @ Ray Bikes Preston VIC

1200

An absolute bargain I came across when browsing bikeexchange, a full carbon road bike with FULL shimano 105 5800 11 speed for under a grand. Can only assume this is a clearance sale to make room for the newer models coming in, but still ridiculously good. Most bikes of this type would feature cheaper/lower quality wheels, brakes and cranks to reduce cost, but this comes with the full deal.

Great mid-tier road bike if you are getting into cycling (despite what others may say, 105 5800 is most definately not entry level), although it is carbon, so it is lighter and stiffer but also more brittle.

Great first time post op and welcome to Ozbargain :)

  • +1

got the ultegra version its an amazing NZ designed frame for an amazing price if this was american or italian woul be 3-4k for a sl integrated frame like this

  • +1

to be honest I would pay double for this https://www.bikeexchange.com.au/a/road-bikes/avanti/qld/fort…

as the dura ace 9000 is about $1300 alone I know this has th eultegra FD but for $2k a dura ace carbon sl bike you dont see these prices ever!

    • +1

Not full dura ace groupset though

      • an FD and chain are the least important parts of a groupset in terms of weight saving and functionality hence the manufacturers usually using a lower end part if you really care get a FD for $80 and a DA chain for $50 respectfully.

        • +3

True, 2 grand for almost full dura ace, carbon and sl is completely unheard of, but there's really not much point if you are new to road cycling. Personally I reckon the 1 grand price point for a solid road bike is best for getting more people into cycling.

      • Also it's the older dura ace model, not the one released this year (9100, 9150, etc.).

      • Only DA bits are the shifters and RD. No DA crankset or brakes

    • +1

Get the $1K version then pickup some cheap-ish Di2 bits and wheels on the FB swap groups, some cheapish used C24s or Fulcrum 1's. Sellof the wheels that come with this form somebody's trainer and sell the 105 groupset on the FB groups. Pickup a 2nd hand Selle SMP saddle. HMMMM how can I sneak $1K out of the Bank and another bike into the Garage without the Mrs knowing!!

    • Unless you're racing dura ace isn't worth the spend. For most it's pointless.

  • Just checked few bikes on the site… Why no disk brakes on road bikes?

    • +2

mostly weight but you absolutely can get disc brakes and they are becoming more common with road bikes
especially lower end cyclocross but you will always find the higher end without due to weight savings for races.
p.s the sentiero is a great first CX bike.

    • +2

more disc disc models on 2017/2018 models ….. there were a few mount standards for discs on road bikes as they were effectively mouting MTB brakes on road bikes, has released a "flat mount" which seems to have become the de facto …… standards bring down prices so expect to see more discs. also more hydraulic brakes not just cable pull as shimano along with the flat mount now has hydraulics in tiagra.

also the "elite" racing levels haven't accepted discs yet …. claimed unsafe in pile ups ….. i reckon chain ring does more damage. than a disc rotor.

i love the discs on my road bike …..

    • +4

You can't race on disc brake at your local club level until they get approved for use first at the world level, then cycling australia will ok them then the state body, then the club.

      • if you were serious about racing at a club level you'd possibly get a better bike , but there are a lot of people that don't race at a club level and discs are good if a lot of your time mid week is spent just cycling.

the disc issue at elite racing level is i think more that some manufacturers got caught blind sided….. shops trying to sell $6000 bikes ….. you'd want to clear your old stock from your loyal dealers before you bring out $6000 disc bikes…….some manufacturers jumped the gun like specialized which enabled them to get people to upgrade who aren't elite racers.

it's all about getting people to upgrade so you can sell more bikes and just changing the colour of durace from silver to gun metal grey isn't much incentive to buy a new bike.

        • +1

I've got a giant propel which I race at club level. It has horrible 1st gen aero TRP brakes. Racing crits it isn't really an an issue though as I'm hardly braking.

I've tested the specialized Tarmac sworks disc and giant TCR disc on a hilly circuit and came away really impressed. So my next bike will likely be disc but if at the same the dealers are doing deep discounts on clearing rim brake models I could very well be swayed.

  • Pretty good deal!

  • +1

    great first post OP!

    • +3

cheers, couldn't help myself since I recently upgraded to a caad 8 105 5 that i saw from a deal on here a month ago :D

      • can always sell that off and upgrade again :D

  • A good first road bike then?

  • +1

    Does this ship to WA?

    • +1

Pretty sure on the last deal people rang this shop and they wouldn't ship at all.

      • Bummer. Oh well, thanks for the help.

  • So I was looking at buying a bike around Christmas but put of unil the new models came out and the previous model got discounted but I thought that was start of spring? But seeing a few bike deals currently?

    • +1

Looks like 2016 old stock is going cheap because 2018 stock will be in soon.

    • +1

different manufacturers release at different times of the year …. some even in june , you'd hate to be lost in the crowd if everybody released at the same time.
also northern hemisphere summer is mid year …… who buys a new bike when it's snowing ? the christmas date release is more australia getting stock when the northern hemisphere moves to winter…. and the bikes were already on the us and europe markets.
even a brochure can be enough to get people to stall their next bike vs what's on the shop floor from a competitor.

      • True, I read the article last week on the new BMC teammachine and then today's article about Contador's new Trek Emonda and thought if i was in the market I would wait for either of those 2.

How do you get one in Sydney for that price?

    • +1

      Drive down to Melbourne.

    • Same here in Sydney but really want to get one

    • +10

1-way flight to Melbourne - Ride back

  • How does this compare to the Cannondale CAAD8 (https://www.ozbargain.com.au/node/305422) posted a few weeks ago for the same price?

    • +4

This is a better deal. 105 everything including brakes. The carbon frame should be more comfortable (less road buzz and vibration) but that's only in theory. I've had Avanti carbon before and it's a nice smooth ride. I'd pick this over the CAAD8 due to better components and possibly being lighter, but both are good bikes.

  • Oh I just noticed this has 5810 chainstay mounted brakes, impressed with the bits of Aero design here and there for the price! Good find OP!

  • knowing nothing about cycling but eager to get into given the cooler months upon us - if i dropped $2k on this badboy, how much (and what else) do I need to buy to be able to enjoy cycling down the peninsula ? (at my own pace)

    • +2

Bike is very good value for the money. The only real difference between 11 speed 105 and Dura-Ace is the weight of the groupset and the slightly quicker shift times (few K price difference is not justified). The wheels are decent for a beginner (bomb proof but not too crazily heavy) and theres always an option to upgrade the wheels later. All in all a solid bike and perfect for you to ride down the peninsula. All you'd need is a cycling helmet and you'll be good to go.

    • +6

Pedals obviously. Ask JV where to get them he should be an expert in this area by now.

    • +5

A helmet, Lycra (bibshorts and a jersey) it is cold in the morning and I would recommend a cycling jacket and some warm cycling gloves, maybe some arm and leg warmers, red flashing light for the seatpost, some Bidons (water bottles and cages) some cycling shoes and pedals. A couple of spare tubes, a multi tool and a small mini pump that you can shove into the pockets on the back of your jersey in case you get a flat and have to change it mid-ride. Almost everyone these days also has a Garmin cycling computer to tell them how fast and how far they've come but it is not necessary. Finally at the very minimum a zip lock sandwich bag for your phone, ID card and coffee money in case you have to call a cab to get you home!

      • And Strava FTW!

        • Also forgot Wahoo Kickr, Powermeter and GoPro!

        • @2ndeffort: And an obsessive/addictive personality. And you gotta be a morning person. :)

        • +2

@nortyjak: Yes, I still struggle with the morning bit. Without pre-judging the bloke who asked the question, at some stage, probably 1/2 way up a steep hill somewhere you will also probably need a large spoonfull of Concrete! Otherwise known as Rule 5, here are the rules of cycling http://www.velominati.com/the-rules/

        • +1

          @2ndeffort:

yeah i'm pretty weak, weaker in the mornings too lol - thanks all for the input

  • +1

They wont ship to WA, but can anyone recommend a good priced freight company for moving a bike VIC to WA? Also they said not much stock left 30 mins ago, medium size all gone.

    • hmm I'm thinking Toll?
Someone at the bike shop would need to know that Toll is coming tho.

It's a great deal. Such a pity we pay through the roof in WA.

  • -1

if i had pedals i can ride this bike and go bike riding

    • +3

      Question or observation? :D

  • Note, they have alot of other models available, like one in Black, with a more aero frame for $1250, even models with women specific geometry. So when this sells out (If it hasn't already), you can check out the other models too

      Popular comment!

    • You must be fun at parties

    • But imagine all the money we'd save in hip replacements? We could use it to create bigger better roads.

    • How open minded of you.

  • Anyone have any idea on the weight of the 2016 DR1, DR2, SL1 and/or SL2.

I assume the DR frames are the same and the SL's are the same so even if you just had frame and fork weights.

I can find the team but not these ones

  • https://www.bikeexchange.com.au/a/road-bikes/avanti/vic/pres… Same specs same price but for women and still in stock.
