War on Waste - Coffee Cups [RESOLVED]

EDIT: Resolved! See below!

Hello guys,

I just recently caught up on War on Waste series through ABC iView. It was quite amazed at the numbers they mentioned there especially in regards to plastic bags, clothings and coffee cups!

Yeah, so I found out that coffee cups aren't really recyclable and was thinking of taking my KeepCup with me more often. However, I then remembered why I stopped using my Keep Cup, apparently it's only spill proof, and not exactly leak proof.

Have you guys got any recommendation on what travel cups that can be thrown into my bag with full assurance that it's not going to leak everywhere inside my bag?

I've seen a couple of Contigo branded ones, but what I've found so far is that because they try to fit the cups into the standard cup holders in cars, they tend to be slightly taller because the insulated wall makes it too thick and it means that it can contain less coffee if it was made too short.

The reason that I don't like these tall cups are because they can't immediately fit under my coffee machine (Breville 820). And a KeepCup is too much hassle to hold onto while I'm on a public transport.

So, for people who make their coffee at home and travel to work, what do you guys usually do? Do you just use a Keep Cup and put them in the car/hold them? Or do you have one with 100% leak proof but make them in another cup then pour into it?

Thanks

EDIT: Thanks to timdee and dbun1 i have now chosen to buy the Frank Green cups! As you can see in the link below they fit really well under my Breville 820 group head! It doesn't leak even if you turn ot upside down and shake it… You do however need to make sure its closed tight though…

They're not as insulated as a Contigo but definitely better than KeepCup! We paid $31 each. The good thing is you can take apart the pop lid so you can clean them easily and even swap colours…

      • yep!

If you are getting a Frank Green try and get the 8oz if you can - because of the screw down lid design, the 12oz can be too tall for some groupheads

        • Thanks for the suggestion! There is a shop in Port Melbourne that sells these Frank Green cups…

          I'll check them out tomorrow!

        • @4iedemon:

All the parts are interchangeable too which is nice, if you have more than one.

But sometimes the button mechanism gets jammed or leaks so you have to take it apart and put it back together (takes about 2 minutes). When it jams it usually just takes a second attempt to close it. Though once maybe twice in the past 5-6 months I've had it it's taken 20-30+ presses to close it…

        • Thanks guys! Bought two… for me and my partner!

Thank you for pointing out that most paper coffee cups are not recyclable. I did not know that and you have made an impression on me.

I'm far from a hippie but I did live in Adelaide when they soft banned plastic bags and they have recycling incentives. I've been back in Melbourne for a few years and still cannot get used to how much dirtier it is, and the general disregard for waste.

Probably just a population density thing. There's about 10 people in Adelaide? :p

      • +2

There's actually about 3000 but most of the bodies have been hidden so well…

    • But the coffee! It must be so much better? Being from Melbourne and all? Right?

Don't forget the quality of the water.

The sistema go travel mugs are great. No leaks, double insulated you just twist to open them.Go on sale at coles often.

    • No leaks? Even upside down??

I have a few Thermos 'King' travel mugs. They are very tough and keep liquids hot for hours. I make coffee in a separate mug and pour it in.

Edit: Also completely leak proof. They may dent if you toss them up the driveway but I've never broken one.

  • Consider the Cheeki coffee mug. I have never had it leak in my bag, it's insulated, and it fits in a standard cup holder.

  • How long does it take to drink a cup of coffee?

200ml to 250ml should be finished in 2 minutes tops.

    • +1

it should, but for some reason there are people that seem to make a small latte last all morning.
Once it goes lukewarm I can't stand it, let alone the fact it would be stone cold by the time they get through it.

I don't personally own one (as they're a bit pricey), but Klean Kanteen might have what you want. I linked what is technically an insulated food storage container, but it comes in 8oz (237ml) and 16oz (473ml) sizes, and are apparently leak proof. I would think the 8oz size would fit under your coffee machine. The only thing is that you'd be drinking your coffee essentially out of a tin can (also the price, might be able to get it cheaper elsewhere).

That was a bit of an anticlimax…. War on waste…. Find me a leak proof cup.

  • STOP GLOBAL WARMING…… what's the cheapest bicycle?

    • Bike production causes pollution! How do I make walking shoes out of dead grass?!

Side note on topic: If the cups are too big, most machines allow trays to be pulled apart (but yes, if you make multiple cups it does get messy from the drip. One cup should be OK).
A few cafes also offer discounts for BYO cups (Bring your Cup, Save a Coin campaign) but not many are onboard with this.

  • Great post and thinking!
I found this Japanese invention. Kinda like the thermos
It's a bit expensive but has potential?

    • Look closer. It's just a Contigo autoseal.

So, for people who make their coffee at home and travel to work, what do you guys usually do?

I'd simply set the alarm 5 mins early and finish the coffee before I leave home, otherwise, after the coffee has been tossing and turning in the thermos for an hour, the Nescafe at work would probably taste better………..

(assuming you are drinking the frothed milk type of coffee, even then, I can't see how an hour old long black/espresso shot will taste any good)

    maybe look at cold brewing?

    • I get what you mean…

But as mentioned in my previous comment, its not about not having enough time.

Its about drinking my favourite warm drink on the train. Slowly.

I usually drink long black, and they're okay until lukewarm temperature.

I have a cold drip Brewover 2.0 at home too, but not all beans taste good for cold drip.

    Wouldn't something like this suffice?

    • I had that… not 100% leak proof and the insulation is about on par with KeepCups… :-/

This seems like a good initiative http://www.responsiblecafes.org

    • That's awesome, good find.

      • This was mentioned on the show.

  • I have one of these and they are definitely leak proof, I chuck it in my bag all the time even if it is full. The lid is also 10x easier to clean than my Contigo.

They are still a bit tall to place under the coffee machine.

Have you tried frank green cups? I bought one for myself and one for my bf a while ago because of its leak proof qualities. I must admit the quality is variable - mine worked well, his lid is difficult to get on and leaks sometimes but the team is quite good at responding to customer complaints. It's quite expensive but I think its worth not having to hold it on PT…

  • Just saw that Harvey Norman have double wall ceramic travel mugs for $ 5 which they claim are leak proof but I can't vouch for yet. Cheap! Might be heavy.
