Their older models were notorious for failing due to bad capacitors.

Plenty of talk on the net about these. TP-LINK's warranty handling was worthless. I had 2 (of 2) fail within months of each other at around the 1.5 year mark. Good thing DIY repair was fairly straightforward.

I hope they haven't gone cheap on you.

  • Stay away from TPLink EoP, they are designed to fail after a year. This is my personal experience. I suspect their ADSL Wifi moderm doing so as well.

    • Haven't experienced what you've mentioned on my AC1900 wifi modem

      • Tbf he does only mention EoP

      • My TpLink modem die exact after a year. I tried to locate the famous bad capacitor, but could not find any blow up capacitor.

    • I have 200, 500, 2000 models. The 200 and 500 still working after years.

      • Lucky. There must be heaps of TL-PA211 kits in landfill now.

    • Have no problems with my TD-W8980 I bought a few year ago. Still going strong.

    • Likewise. I bought a similar unit (the TP-Link TL-PA8010P-KIT AV1200) and it failed within a week. TP-Link agreed it was faulty and let me return it.

While in use, it caused weird behaviour on the same circuit - the kettle wouldn't work and my clock radio's digits would flash all the time.

This thing is pretty huge. You can't tell from the pictures but it's 131×72×42 mm. If you have a twin wall socket, it will probably take up both sockets. If you have one socket and a light switch it will likely cover up the light switch. Just something to think about.

TP Link don't make them as compact as others.

In my case, thing thing didn't even work because it was not on the same circuit. It's not easy to determine if something is the same circuit either, so buyer beware. If it's over long distances, it's probably a different circuit, making it of limited use.

It's not that difficult to turn off a circuit breaker in the power box and see what points still have power.

I don't think most girls could do that.

In any case, I have things I can't switch off. And I wasn't going to experiment.

I got a wifi range extender as a substitute. Not perfect but it works for the most part.

  • Great timing, my 4 year old ones died and I was using my 8 year old ones which were slow as balls, so glad to find a 2000 set for a good price.

  • Great price. Bought one for $119 other day :(

  • AV2000 model may cause some issue with FTTN VDSL, suggest don't put it too close to the DSL phone line.
