Slow Drivers: Why Do You Drive Slow?

I'm just wondering why some people resolutely drive 10km/hr below speed limit.

The ones I have seen are not scared of speed, as they go from doing 50 in a 60 zone, to 85 in a 100 zone.

I understand that the limit is only the maximum limit, but I am still curious.

Been driving for a long time, and feel no need to prove my competency to you or anyone else. How rude.

        • You're only further highlighting the problem that is inherent on Australian roads.

You SHOULD need to prove competency; driving is a privilege and not a right. If you are not capable enough to drive properly then you should either seek to improve this skill or cease worsening the roads for everyone else, both with respect to efficiency and safety.

@Strahany: I'd like to know why it is that you think that driving to my ability is somehow indicative of incompetence. Seriously, you have got the wrong end of the stick. Driving to one's ability IS an indicator of competence. Tailgating and harassing people on the road is an indicator of a frakkin IDIOT.

Eh, I'll go 10 under the speed limit if either of my parents are in the car since they're not comfortable at the speed limit. Also, some morning I'll just cruise 10 under because I'm in no rush to get to work, just chillin' out listening to some music or an audiobook. Driving can be pretty relaxing if you're not always in a rush.

Just keep out of the right lane is all. I'm way more annoyed if someone is on my ass whilst I'm in the left lane than if I'm in the mood to go fast and there is someone doing the speed limit in the right lane.

  • Because it's hard to drive and listen to AM radio at the same time.

  • Sometimes I'm transporting pots of soup in the back seat. Sry bruh

    • Or a birthday cake that took hours of my life!

  • Because I can, because it's safer, because I feel comfortable at that speed and that is my limit on that road.

Don't like it ? Go to therapy, you might have some issues.

I've just had it up to my effing eyeballs with Sydney traffic.

I routinely have to travel down arterial roads across Sydney. People that kill me the worst are the hogs who sit ACROSS all three lanes doing 60 in an 80 zone, and you can't get past them. Morons. Wall of morons. KEEP LEFT, (profanity).

Sunday kills me having seemingly all the drivers out for their casual Sunday drive to nowhere. No spatial awareness or consideration for others. Then you're got Learners across all lanes with their retard teacher refusing to tell them not to ride the outside lane 20 below the limit without planning to turn right at some point.

And don't even get me started on the derps in peak hour traffic, who leave ridiculously huge gaps between themselves and the car in front. Safe space is incredibly important, dont get me wrong, but if you could safely park 2 sedans in their 'safe gap' in peak hour, I would like to murder you.

  • Maybe they drive slow because they can't eat a cheeseburger and drive stick at the same time??

  • Another question, why many people like to drive a few km above speed limit? Why these people think that its ok because cops would not pick them on a few kms above the limit, but actually cops could and sometimes they would fine you for 2 or 3kms over the limit. They might think it is still safe, but there is a reason to put a speed limit.

If there is one lane and the road condition is good, driving 60 in 80 zone is a bit annoying. 70 is ok to me. But I'm not there to draw a line and say you have to drive above that line, because there is no line here. People has all the rights to drive slowly as long as they don't intentionally try to annoy others and don't put their and others' lives in risk.

I don't like cruise mode unless it is a straight road. I don't like to stick to the speed limit as if it is a rule, because focusing on keeping speed limit makes me tired, and I don't like to speed. So for me the safest way to drive is to drive slightly below speed limit. Say 55 in 60, 70 in 80, 90 in 100. When I'm tired or the road/light/weather condition doesn't make confident, I might be even slower, which makes me feel safe. I have no passion in driving, all I'm interested in is to get to my destination safely. I'm rarely in a rush. I'm always half an hour late for work, but my boss is fine with that ^oo^.

    • Another question, why many people like to drive a few km above speed limit?

As others have started above somewhere, if you compared you're Speedo vs the speed stated on a GPS, you would most likely find that your Speedo is lower ie. It's calibrated lower (especially in modern cars). So when you go 70 on an 80 road, you might actually be doing 66. When others go 63 (according to your Speedo), they're actually going 60 and you're doing 57. Your 55 is probably 53 in actual speed.

Well, good point. I did realize that the speed I read on dashboard (not digital) was usually 2-3 kms below my GPS reading. It is not my job to justify which is actual speed. My job is to make sure that I don't go above the limit. When I say I'm happy to drive 70 in 80 zone that doesn't mean I need to keep 70 all the time. Don't get me wrong, I also drive 80 in 80, but when I do that, I need to pay attention to speed all the time but when I drive 70 it doesn't matter if I do 75 or 65. I only need to check speed occasionally.

  • On similar lines, why do people walk slowly too?

  • I drive slow so I don't hit things and potentially dent my bonut

  • As a shared resource it is not really designed for the local Mad Max's with their bullying we must always ride on the max speed irrespective of conditions.

  • My fuel economy in the country is crazy better when I drive at 85km/h vs 100km/h. It also makes me happier when I drive with a hat on. Lol.

  • Hard to drive fast when texting but i'm working on it

  • Wonder if we need to have another mandatory driving test at 65. Wouldn't mind doing it when I'm that age.
