Will a USB Audio Interface Reduce Interference on Studio Monitors

So I've just purchased some Studio Monitors for my PC and am noticing a slight bit of interference through them. Seems to be detecting mouse movement, and PC noise (i.e playing some games causes quite a bit of interference)

Just wondering if I purchase a USB audio interface if this will stop this? I would then change over to balanced TRS cables as well.

Is this the only option I have? The only cause I can see is the PC itself as there is no noise when I remove the 3.5mm cable from the onboard sound card, but seeing as they are for the PC I cant take it out of the equation unfortunately.

If this would solve the issue, any suggestions on which interface with TRS outputs would be great

  • Have you tried :

    • swapping the cable to a better shielded cable?
    • trying a different source of audio whilst still connected to same powersupply?
    • I have not :P - bit new to it all, what would be an example of a better shielded cable?

referring to the difference source of audio….do you mean connect the monitors to say a phone instead of the pc? I shall try that tonight and see the outcome.

      • Higher quality cables can have better contacts, stronger cores and shielding which can be less prone to interference

Correct try a phone instead of a PC as in past I have come across bad power supplies introducing noise in audio gear.

  • +1

It's a common problem with on board sound.

You can solve it with a USB interface as you say or installing an internal sound card.

    • Would the USB interface be a better choice than the internal sound card, just to get it away from the PC itself.
From what I can see the speakers connect to the interface and the only connection from the interface to the PC is the USB? is this correct? Is that all it requires to the PC?

      • Either is the same as far as having no interference.

I don't think the issue is EM radiation from anything (since TRS "shielded cables" has bare unshielded metal showing), it's solely created by the on board soundcard and it's power supply from the motherboard changing when other devices are used like hard disk (I'm guessing).

        • Looks like I'm on the hunt for an interface then.

        • @Fergy1987: I had the same issues as you when I got studio monitors. I tried installing an internal soundcard first, which didn't solve the problem. I then bought an external DAC which fixed the problem. Good luck!

        • So rca to the DAC and then digital to the onboard sound?

        • @Fergy1987: I've got RCA to DAC to USB to computer. Check out the HRT Music streamer.

  • Bluetooth Dongle + Bluetooth Speakers? Would this be the same as USB audio? I know the sound you are mentioning, normally hear it when the mouse is moving. I don't think I have heard that sound when using bluetooth speakers.

    • They arent bluetooth speakers?

      • Yeah my bluetooth speakers and bluetooth speakers. I use a bluetotooth USB dongle on the PC to transmit the bluetooth audio.

  • Anyone have any thoughts on the Behringer U-Phoria UMC22?
