Why Do People Do Burnouts and Modify Their Cars to Be Louder?

I can't make sense of some of the things that people do with their cars.

1.Burnouts

Pros

None

Cons

Dangerous
Accelerated tire wear-need to change tires more often-costs more money
Sitting in a spinning car makes you sick

2.Modify the exhaust of cars so that they are unbearably loud

Most cars are designed to be as quiet as possible which makes sense. Why would people want their day to day car to be noisy? Wouldn't it drive the driver mad as well if you have to suffer from the noise everytime you're behind the wheel?

Can anyone help me understand behaviours like these?

Yes they like it, they're also assholes. Most people don't do whatever they like because they consider others.

  • +3

I'm sure it's been pointed out many times here already (I didn't read through all the comments)

But it's the same reason anyone has any interest in any hobby and their social groups can sometimes also revolve around the same interest etc.

You could pose the same question for any of the following, why do people:

    • Read books?
    • Paint pictures?
    • Manicure and maintain a garden?
    • Collect stamps?
    • Make dolls?
    • Participate in boxing?
    • Play music?
    • Shoot guns (gun clubs)
    • Go skiing?
    • Go cart racing?
    • Drift racing?
    • Cycling?

To some people some of these activities are pointless, to others it's their greatest interest.

It just so happens that some people's hobby is to work on cars, make them seems as powerful as possible (loudness helps here) and demonstrate how powerful they are (burnouts can show this sorta - let's ignore the technicals here :) ). There are cultural norms in each interest groups and you've identified one! :)

We all need something to interest us and often other's "just don't get why", but we're all different. It's a good thing! I just wish these peeps would stop doing burnouts in front of my house (that's what I get for having a go at them once.. I now have the pleasure of a visit every month or so from the same !&$#! doing his thing :) )

    • +4

Reading books isn't generally annoying, dangerous, illegal and pointless.

  • +2

It's people like you that need some external gate in their life.

    • Waste gate?

      • Yes. PS. Goodtimes on ye old whopper server.

  • Turn heads

  • +1

Of course it's awesome, it ups your street cred by 5 points which is the equivalent of getting yourself a fidget spinner. Nice!

  • +6

It's like asking why Americans voted for Trump

    • But with fun instead of an idiot running a country.

  • +1

Well honestly I gotta admit it's a fun thing to do when you're young.
Just dont fkin do it near my house

    • +1

Unfortunately "young" seems to include spoilt brats in their early 30's these days

  • I once had a bunch of bogans with milo tins for their exhaust making a racket while i was sitting down to drink coffee.

On the way home, i drove past them where it looked like one of the idiots crashed their car up onto traffic island. Instant karma.

Rolled down the window and told them they are idiots which didn't make them too happy

  • +1

cuz human just stupid at times..

  • Who wouldn't want to bald their tyres before they're even paid for? These are the same morons that had babies for a $5k bonus.

    • What 5k bonus?

      • The baby bonus they had for several years. Are you new here?

        • Isnt that discontinued a few years back

        • @djmm: That's why I said had, and not have. Past tense, not present tense.

  • Meh, get a bike and destroy all these bogans without modifying it for far less money.

  • +3

Good question…./ i did it when i was 18….fully sick Holden Camira with massive loud exhaust…. waking up my neighbors every night…

Twenty years later i cannot believe how dumb that looks now….. mow incan admit that there was so much back preissure from the big exaust that car has actually lost power….

Dont have an answer for you…i guess it helped me get through my airy fairy years

  • Pros
    none

there's heaps though. for starters you get to hear the roar of a high powered engine at its maximum rev range

  • -1

Like it or not, we live in a bogan country and those are what bogans love doing. You'd better move to better part of Straya if you don't want to get bothered.

    • Their isn't a better part. The rich bogans just buy more expensive commodores

  • Why do people do anything?

  • Why do people take drugs?

    Why do people hurt themselves?

Why do people hurt other people?

Why do people need more money then they require when others live in poverty?

    human behavior is irrational

    • Drugs help you escape.

People hurt themselves due to depression.

People hurt other people because they're assholes.

You can never have enough money.

      Next question.

I think a point that hasn't been addressed yet is the fact that the sound a car makes is absolutely integral to the driving experience of a car. As someone who runs a car club I think I can say pretty confidently it's mostly regarded the most important factor regarding driver feedback and in turn, a big factor of driving enjoyment. Like someone said, to a car person the exhaust note is akin to music, music that's controlled by the driver themselves.

There's a good reason why more expensive cars are always louder (this is almost always true regardless of whether it's a luxury car or a sports car). It's because the goal is to make the driving experience more enjoyable rather than just being a tool for a daily commute like a Camry.

It's easy for us to understand why people would think of this as obnoxious, but to us it's just ignorance and lack of appreciation.

    • So lack of appreciate of a beautifully sounding V8 vibrating your walls a 2am when you've got work at 6am.

      Consider others much?

      • +2

I fail to see where he mentioned making an obnoxiously loud noise at 2 am? Nowhere does it say his car club makes uncourteous sounds later at night.

He is simply answering the OP's original question regarding why people might want a louder exhaust note. I could not agree more with his answer.

        • discourteous. ;-)

    Why do we eat cake?

    Why do we question?

    Why do we dream?

    Why do we Cry?

    why do we question things?

    why do we question life?

Personally I hate loud exhausts and People that do burnouts on residential streets…

    • +2

Those questions are different to op's question of doing something annoying and dangerous for no apparent reason.

    • What is love?

  • Now that I'm older I actually prefer quieter cars for the most part as I'm often with the family trying to have a conversation or just enjoy the serenity. I still appreciate a nice sounding exhaust on an exotic car (or even high performance models of luxury sedans/SUVs) but gone are the days where I enjoyed having a very noisy exhaust droning in the background in traffic, making it exhausting at times to drive, and also the unwanted attention. That being said at the time I really loved my HKS Hi-Power exhaust on the Evo as it sounded great especially when accelerating, but that was 10 years ago (and it increased power/torque since I got it tuned with the intake/exhaust).

Because their lives have such little meaning and value, they can't contribute to society, so they have to try to prove themselves and "impress" their peers in other ways. They also have a lot of pent-up anger and frustration to release, so doing a burnout in a loud, powerful car satisfies them for a short time, but doesn't address their underlying issues.

  • +1

They want attention. And because they're stupid this is the only way they can get attention.

  • +1

Burnouts are for the bogans or habibs. This I don't get. Not good for your car, the tyre wear, etc. Even at controlled events I don't get burnouts. But at controlled events, fair enough, it's fine if people are into it. I just can't stand the late night burnouts where the whole street is disturbed.

Crazy loud exhausts are fine… during the day. But but when my fellow habibs driving an AMG C63 or Harley punch it late at night, that does my head in.

I have a 4 cylinder and have done full exhaust work. Thankfully it's not crazy loud, bit still quite noisy. I just love the down shift gurgle noise from the exhaust. Though that main benefit is that it's actually better for the car. The stock exhaust is way too restrictive. I try to be a considerate person. So if returning home late, I don't put my foot down, to minimise noise.

Not all people who modify cars are inconsiderate bogans/habibs. But unfortunately the ones that are, usually have the spot light.

I think it's been mentioned. The guys over compensate. Put simply, it's an ego thing. "Hear my car/bike roar"

    • +2

Crazy loud exhausts are fineā€¦ during the day. But but when my fellow habibs driving an AMG C63 or Harley punch it late at night, that does my head in.

Ever consider shift workers who are trying to sleep during the day?? Sorry, crazy loud exhausts are not fine at ANY time of the day or night.

      • +1

        Fair enough.

  • I made the exhaust much louder on my motorbike. Made it so much easier. People stopped cutting me off. I suspect it's because they can hear something is near them and then look a bit harder before switching lanes or merging into me.

  • Hey OP, why don't you tell us something that you enjoy so that we can take turns knocking it down. Just because you see cars purely as transport (I am guessing you drive a Toyota, "whitegoods on wheels"), some of us appreciate cars for their beauty, performance, sound and sheer awesomeness.

I teach high school kids. The ones that crave attention but haven't quite figured out how to attract it in a mature manner often make loud noises in class to do so.

Upon leaving school, do they develop the maturity to change this approach? I fear not.

    • This reply. Spot on.

  • I am on the water quite a bit during the summer. Unfortunately, a percentage of people who seem to enjoy the activities that have the OP scratching his head can be seen getting out of their excessively loud and pointless cars and getting on their excessively loud and pointless water craft - the jet ski. Round and round they go, making as much noise as they can. Fun? Is that sufficient justification to ruin it for everyone else? Give me a break.

  • I agree that's lame. What we did was go out to pics and the drinker person would always have to drive is all home. Now hats the real thrill.

  • BOGANS!

  • small dicks

  • Doesn't it increase your penis size by 4 inches?

Why Do People Do Burnouts and Modify Their Cars to Be Louder?

These are kids and they do it impress other kids, sad really.

  • watch the south park episode on bikies

  • +2

Because it's exciting, gives an adrenaline rush

If you treat your car like a white good and have no interest it in, you won't understand

  • Because they are Losers.

  • -1

Thrills and to annoy people mainly. And it works.
Seriously go take a ride on a 1500cc hire jetski this summer. You'll sheeet yourself with fun!

People mentioned that tyres are cheap. Gearboxes and clutches OTOH wear out fast doing this crazy stuff. Whoohoo ;-)

  • They simply having mental issue plus need attention from others due to lack attention from their parents when they were young

  • I only have a problem with exhausts if they are fart cans on shitboxes. Proper exhausts that aren't stupidly large but give a good tone are perfectly fine, I love hearing them. Burnouts in public when others are around are stupid yes, but if no one else is around by all means go ahead I don't care. If they hurt themselves its Darwinism. Modifying cars is a passion and an outlet for many people, please don't let the idiots in this scene ("stancenation"/fartcans etc) give a bad image/stigma to the rest of us.

  • +2

A noisy car is like a fart… only one person finds it interesting.. :-(

  • Just make sure the car is "On" LOL

  • -1

Heh….i actually cant understand how someone could deive to work with a quiet boring car. That would drive me absolutely insane.

I commute to work 90mins each way and love nothing more than starting up my wrx sti. Bought it quiet with 150kw atw then purchased a straight through exhaust immediately, which is loud as all buggery with 210kw atw and i have a huge smile on my face the whole way.

Heck…even when i had my old crx i loved the exhaust and couldnt wait to drive it daily.

My wife is the same as me…we struggle to understand how people can drive boring cars daily….doesnt make any sense.

Now burnouts…thats a differet story. I dont get that one.

Moral of the story, everyone is different. Some like excitment and some like beige camry's.

    • +1

similar attitude with graffiti on public places / buses or public trains some idiot think that as arts, think this way in the middle at night while you are sleeping and suddently an idiot with loud car woke u up would you be pissed while the car driver put a huge smile on his face?

  • Because some people are imbeciles. It's all just attention seeking behaviour so just ignore them don't even look at them and pretend they don't exist, they just want a reaction to validate their existence.

  • Ask a policeman next time you see one. These days I see police cars doing burnouts more than anyone else.

Not having to pay for their own tyres must be great too.

  • It's people like OP that are the reason these stupid car laws exist. I enjoy modifying things, especially cars. People like OP are ruining aussie car culture. If you can't rip a fat skid and get cheered on by your fellow Australian then this country is (profanity) shit.

  • Because they are attention seekers that want the attention to feed the big old ego. It's also to make up for an inferiority complex. I am all for people having hobbies but not at other people's expense.

They don't care that the are making lots of noise and they gather in car parks to do stupid stuff too.
Selfish act just like smoking, no care for other people's health.
