Why Do People Do Burnouts and Modify Their Cars to Be Louder?

I can't make sense of some of the things that people do with their cars.

1.Burnouts

Pros

None

Cons

Dangerous
Accelerated tire wear-need to change tires more often-costs more money
Sitting in a spinning car makes you sick

2.Modify the exhaust of cars so that they are unbearably loud

Most cars are designed to be as quiet as possible which makes sense. Why would people want their day to day car to be noisy? Wouldn't it drive the driver mad as well if you have to suffer from the noise everytime you're behind the wheel?

Can anyone help me understand behaviours like these?

        Just because

        • You should do an AMA.

    • +1

such a bad set of examples… eating fast food, wear new clothes, getting new phone, earn more money has affect on he who does it, not everyone else around. As per op's question making ur car loud affects not only you (you chose to) but everyone else around…

      • +1

Ok noise pollution affects everyone and is almost undertaken by every single thing. Why target just cars with loud exhausts then? Hoe about trains/busses/people on phones/airports/tourists/shopping centre music/clubs?

I can also say eating fast food affects other people, because poor health has many negative effects on society. Increased medical bills as people become fat aka medicare levies imposed on the tax payer, public transport space constraints, lower productivity in the work place creating burdens on other team members.

The point isn't that these are bad examples and that burnouts and exhausts affect society, the point is that its a free world, people do shit just because they can, and they also do not need to be accountable to the opinions of OP and yourself.

The same way I don't have the right to complain about peoples health, consumerism, financial greed or stupidity.

Gold star if you get it !!

  • +9

The Cons that you listed are only negatives for the public. The Cons do not effect the selfish owners.

Burnouts and donuts aren't dangerous for the driver. The driver is safely enclosed within their car and the actual road speed is so low that there's no chance they could die or suffer serious injury.

Second hand tyre's are dirt cheap. You'll find that people who enjoy burnouts+donuts can source tyre's very cheaply. Auto-wreckers and tyre shops try to find ways to offload 2nd hand or bald tyres.

The most common modification for making the exhaust loud is a cheap cannon muffler (~$100). They are inexpensive and can be easily removed and transferred onto the owner's next car. These kind of mufflers are for attention seeks to force as many people to hear their car. An actual racer would strip the car interior (eg. sound proofing, carpet, floor mats, seats, etc) to save weight but allows engine noise to intrude into the cabin.

Basically most of the negatives are on the public, not the driver. Burnouts and donuts are prohibited on public roads. There are legal venues like skid pans, race circuit, driver training centre, drag strip, farms where its legal for loud exhausts and some tyre spinning.

There are heaps of videos like this on YouTube.

      • -1

        I'm not smoking anything.

I did not see any dead drivers in that video. No crying widows or even a friend to call an ambulance.

All I saw was modern cars doing burnouts in a safe and flat car park. Mostly american cars with firewalls and airbags. I didn't even see an airbag deploy. The worst accidents were a low speed roll in a 4WD and a few motorcycle riders falling on their butts at speeds slower than most downhill mountain bike riders. If you think those accidents are super rare then for some perspective search on YouTube for 4WD, quad bikes, mountain biking, snowboarding, skateboarding videos.

We probably have different opinions on injured drivers. A hurt ego is unpleasant but any accident you can walk away from is a good one.

        • +2

What part of "no chance they could die or suffer serious injury" ????

Cars on fire and the driver jumping out and running for their life - does that not count as perhaps being capable of causing death or serious injury ????

Cars and bikes flipping end over end into trees, fences, barricades, etc. A branch or debris could stab through open or closed or broken windows and impale the driver. How the (profanity) does that not count as perhaps being capable of causing death or serious injury ????

Cars and bikes spinning out of control and careening into crowds of people. How the (profanity) does that not count as perhaps being capable of causing death or serious injury ????

And if you think it is safe for a driver, then think again you (profanity) moron. If you are doing burn outs or driving like an idiot and crash into my car or come anywhere near close to injuring me or my friends / family, then I'm going to teach you a lesson in pain that you will never ever forget.

So explain to me again smart arse, how the (profanity) does any of that not count as perhaps being capable of causing death or serious injury ????

So that explains conservative voters. Always thought they were knuckle draggers

      • The same can be said of the left.

        • With their better education, no, only the right

        • @yoyomablue:
Again, you show your prejudice here. There are knuckle draggers and intelligencia on both side of the fence.

        • -1

@Mitchel: The overwhelming majority of academics & scientists vote left wing

        • @yoyomablue:
Here you have an appeal to authority which is irrelevant.

The term academics is a catch all phrase which encompases STEM professors through to art and social studies teachers.

Not all are equal and your prejudice again shows through.

Here I would be more inclined to hear the thoughts on an automotive engineering graduate than the thoughts of a feminist PHD.

        • -1

@Mitchel: Ok, peer reviewed research shows that lefties have higher average IQ than righties & polling shows lefties have higher average education than righties.
This is not surprising since peer reviewed research shows that IQ is predictive of academic achievement.

Also, a 2013 poll of over 13,000 SCIENTISTS who hold a PhD in America, showed the overwhelming majority vote left wing. No finance. No arts. No engineering(!). Just scientists.

        • +1

          @yoyomablue:
Academic achievement is not a guarantee of intelligence or sense. It is possible to be gifted for study, yet hopeless in the Real World.

Again, you show your prejudice towards IQ and the left and falsely correlate the two.

Also you are espousing a false dichotomy between the left and right. While ignoring a moderate, centre view.

For someone who appears to demonstrate infatuation for intelligence, you fail to display much.

        • @Mitchel: I don't think you understood my statement "peer reviewed research shows that IQ is predictive of academic achievement"

Additionally & more pertinently, one of the research papers suggests that IQ is on a sliding scale - highest at extreme left wing (so higher than the centre) & lowest at extreme right wing

        • +2

@Mitchel: You could've easily said that correlation do not equal causation :P Besides IQ alone is a horrible predictor for predicting academic success.

Besides, there are so many other reasons why scientists would enjoy left wing government. Left wing government tend to invest more into researches and tend to do more public projects. So you cannot really say that scientists prefer left wing government because of their intelligence without discounting those possibilities.

        • @yoyomablue:
Yawn. I tire of arguing with bigots on both left and right.

You have your opinion, fine. Yes, the right wing are all knuckle dragging deplorables, fine. Intelligence is the main redeeming feature of the left, fine. People with high IQ make great decisions, fine.

        • @Oversimplified:
Yes, this is what I was going for.

In the same way that military personnel prefer right wing governments for their funding.

Both sides and good and bad points. It is foolish to idolize either.

        • @Oversimplified: actually, IQ is predictive of academic achievement.
Also, since religious belief and anthropogenic global warming denial is correlated to right wing voting, it further explains why scientists vote left wing…(!) Hence the saying "reality has a left wing bias"

        • @Mitchel: yawn. I tire of how ignorant & disengaged people are from political issues, but consider themselves informed.
          Here's another one for you:

Have fun. I am not saying that IQ isn't a predictor. I am saying IQ alone is a horrible predictor for predicting academic success.

Anyways, correlation doesn't equal causation and that's from first year science courses? Or was that high school level?

  • +4

The noise produced by an engine is inversely proportional to the IQ of the driver.

  • I don't think people who do burnouts are too concerned about accelerated tire wear ;-)

Music to my ears. Wish I have a loud car :'(

    • Drill a couple of holes in your muffler.

      • Or cut the exhaust at the muffler and glue on a Milo tin.

        • I bought a car that had an exhaust like that… Lasted about 2 days of headaches before I got around to fixing it.

Strongly linked to the urge to destroy what others have built and to offend those who share the same living space i.e. earth. Do the drivers of these vehicles smile and say "Wow, listen to that" when they are woken up in the middle of the night (or day, if they are a shift worker) by a car or bike that can be heard two suburbs away? Please grow up and have some consideration for others.

  • 1.Burnouts

    Pros

The rush of adrenaline when you hear your engine start to roar
The burst sound the tyre makes when it finally explodes
The awesome belt slap around the guards of your car from the tyre
    Belt slap img

    Cons

Has a high chance of throwing a rod out the bottom of the block
Can break automatic gearboxes quite easily if you're sitting on the limiter in 1st
Can wipe out a cam lobe if your lifters decide to fail mid burnout
Easily write off your car if you lose it (I went straight into a pole once!)
Can & Will kill your power steering pump

2.Modify the exhaust of cars so that they are unbearably loud

Well, I agree if we're talking about anything other than a rotary or 8 cyl engine.
    4 & 6 cyl sound like shit.
However an 8 cylinders note is quite a pleasure.

    • disagree with the exhaust section and surprised you haven't been mobbed by anyone from the WRX camp for a kick off one of the best sounding 4's with the right exhaust
      4 New focus rs / Merc A45
5 ford focus RS mk 2 / Audi's RS3 same engine has been in a few cars
6 GTR / the new Alfa / closely resembling a certain Ferrari engine with a couple of cylinders missing. take your pick from most Porsches
      8 Jag f-type SVR

Your missing out on so many awesome engines by being closed off to the rotary which has really died a death since Mazda stopped producing the twin turbo 13b version and yes i know it's still in the RX8 but meh Mazda made a mistake going back to N/A or 8's

You will find quickly that the views of experts will say similar not just fanboys.

      • i'd love to see the negs especially when it's crap and the comment is correct.

just because you used fully sick in a sentence if your really an old boy

  • +4

I have something called a "SoundRacer" ,plug it on to the cigarette lighter socket and it will generate a V8 or V12 engine sound to match the engine speed to the FM radio and you pick it up on your car radio at any loudness you want. It does not work on every car because it picks the engine revolution speed from the alternator, but it works fine on some cars and you really feel you are driving a hotted up V8.

    • +2

What a great concept - a bit like chewing Nicabate….it keeps the offensive stuff inside and you can get your fix without blowing (figurative) smoke over everyone else

    • +4

I prefer to just make vroom vroom sounds from my mouth. Somes days i'll mix it up and throw in the sound of a blow-off valve. Tsshhhh

    • have you driven a hotted up V8

listening to a sound generator in almost anything else would just make me sad and would never feel like any kind of muscle car

      was acid involved ?

    • +2

But then you wouldn't annoy other people and what most of the bogans on here want to do is annoy other people.

  • Self expression yo.

  • Because they like it.

  • +3

If you modify a ecobox then you are stupid and classed as a "RICER" but if you own something moderately sporty and want to squeeze a little more hp then why not?

My STI that has modifications can keep up with $150k cars from HSV to BMW M4 and my car only totalled 40k.

  • +1

I wonder the same thing myself every other day. They rev their engines up and speed in the suburban area too. Too many bogans around, sadly. I'll be the one laughing when they crash one day (as long as it's not into me or my family). ;)

  • I understand the appeal of a nice tone in the exhaust its when you're going 20kms down the street and you can be heard 4 blocks away is the problem… if your car is not doing over 3000-4000 revs than it shouldnt be making any noise imo ie honda civics

  • Back in the day when your car breaks traction (burn out) it meant you had a car powerful enough to do so. Not all cars could, it was a way of letting others know that you could afford/had a high performance car.

A loud exhaust is typically a by product of an upgraded exhaust system. An upgrade exhaust system means better performance. Car enthusiast don't normally go out of their way to make it louder.

  • Because they want to.
Just like you come on here and complain about it, because you want to.

Yeah, it's a nuisance, but so are a lot of things in life; you'd spend weeks posting about them all if you so wished, and that's before taking into consideration the fact that something that is a nuisance for one person is not for another (I'm sure that plenty of things you do are a nuisance to many).

If it were up to me, they should give designated areas away from residences where people can do this kind of stuff. Charge an entrance fee which funds the TAC, and grants them a night free from prosecution as they're doing it 'legally', whilst simultaneously preventing the wastage of police resources spent on finding these people (and potentially chasing after them, too).

  • +2

Well I have a heavily modified V8, leaving the stock exhaust on would result in loss of power. I'm not really one for burnouts but I have a cams license and do a bit of circuit racing. I enjoy it. I love the sound of my car (naturally aspirated v8 with lumpy cams)

What's the bet the OP drives some horrific appliance like a Prius or Camry? Just because you don't enjoy driving doesn't mean no else does

    • Well I have a heavily modified V8, leaving the stock exhaust on would result in loss of power.

Do you use this V8 on the road? I'm all for suped up cars and loud exhausts (good sounding ones) but I don't understand why you would need an extra powerful V8 for everyday use. Maybe the going from 0-speed limit at a red light rush but that's it.

    • +1

if you do that in a racecourse , by all means enjoy every bit of it to its fullest.. what doesn't make sense is doing that on the roads in residential area at 5 am in the morning or 1130 pm at night… waking kids up ….

    • And therefore everyone should enjoy the noise your car makes right?

      • Maybe the loud noise clouded your thoughts to the point you cannot distinguish between normal and abnormal … if you really don't understand, speak 5 times louder to someone , wait & see …

  • a nice sounding exhaust can put a smile onto a face

  • +1

Because racecar. Cause: I want to go fast by modding my zhaust. Effect: Loud car. People aren't necessarily doing it to sound loud, although that is pretty sweet for young-ens.

Why do people go hiking? It's quiet, boring as shit, stupid clothes. etc Pros none, Cons lame.

Looking at things purely from a 'practical' standpoint is narrow-minded.

  • +2

I don't do burnouts because tires are expensive.

However, I have modified my exhaust from stock to full turboback. I like the sound and it's fun. I don't consider myself to be a hoon, but I do like to have fun with my car when appropriate. I don't see an issue with that.

    Bogans.

There's this bogan that loves to do roundabout drifts every night or two. Most of the time just heard but one time was unlucky enough to be waiting to cross the road just as this douche came and did them.

I even bet it's one of those "already known to police" but they won't do anything about it.

Just hope if/when he crashes the only person he kills is himself.

As for the original question, even though I'm into neither it's not like I couldn't imagine people liking "skillful" driving and "noice" sounding engines. It's not that unfathomable that I can't make sense of it.

No idea why but I have no problem with this if done in a controlled environment, i.e not at 3am on my street when I've spent two hours getting my kid to sleep. Anything that keeps people engaged and off the drugs/smokes/grog is great. Preferably it doesn't end in catastrophic trauma, hence controlled environment.
