  • whats so good about a micathermic heater vs column oil

      Google is your friend.

    • Well AFAIK they heat up instantly and distribute heat more evenly. They are classified as convection heaters though. But if anyone else knows more on the topic feel free to comment!

        I always think heaters are simple. Heat output ==watts

          "Micathermic panel heaters usually have a similar shape as a column heater, but are often thinner. They have panels of the mineral mica around their heating element; the mica absorbs the heat and radiates it more evenly. This helps the heater warm the room faster and more efficiently than the element alone. " according to Choice https://www.choice.com.au/home-and-living/heating/electric-h…

        • But also, why would all these panel type heaters get so many good reviews https://www.amazon.co.uk/Futura-Electric-Radiator-Standing-T… at a ridiculously low wattage. Legit question I'm curious about this.

          @jdogg: Fake reviews.

          @Diji1:
          On nearly all 140 of them? That was just the first example I found on amazon too there's thousands more. Plus heaps more on a simple google search for other brands/models.

  • What I'm aiming to do is have a heater set up in a garage where the dogs sleep and heat their crates in Melbourne. The heater will be behind a metal barrier so dogs cannot get to it or the power cord. Is this something that is safe enough to trust? No water can get to it, nothing can knock it and bedding will be far enough away that it wont be in contact.

    Needed to add that it will be running when no one is home. We'll be away with pet minders coming 3 times a day, but this heater running from say 9pm til 7am.

    • No, it is not safe to leave unattended. Do not do this. You shouldn't do this with any space heater, but especially not this dodgy unit with a second rate thermostat in it. At the very least you need an excellent fire alarm in the garage to overcome the cheap heater you are going to put in it.
      Also consider access for fire fighters coming to douse your garage/fence/neighbours house/dogs while you are away.

      • Yeah I wouldn't leave any heater unattended in my home no matter how much it cost

          Looks they will have to survive with hot water bottles!

    • and bedding will be far enough away that it wont be in contact.

      You can buy pads and beds for pets that heat up a little and are quite safe.

      Here is one on eBay - http://m.ebay.com.au/itm/Waterproof-Pet-Electric-Heat-Heated…

      They are low voltage with a transformer that you can hook up to a timer.

    Bought one of these last year for our sons bedroom, and it is crap. It makes a loud noise when it turns on and off, and the metal creaks as it heats and cools. Now have a Noirot (admittedly for way more $$) and the difference is amazing
