Better than spending $9.90 or w.e for 1GB recharge top up

  • Is it the code will receive instant? I want to buy a few for my friends to come to visit.

But I am still waiting for the free sim card to arrive.

    • +2

Code is emailed soon after payment, in my experience.

    • -1

Nah it's not instant, takes about 1-2 hours to arrive by email

      • OK thanks, will wait to see if I can receive the SIMs next week.

If I want to get a few I will have to open a few accounts, right?

        • I believe so, you use the voucher when you are meant to select a plan while activating the sim.

        • @moneybaby: ah so I have to actvate new sims + voucher when the old one runs out? fair enough

        • @supabrudda: Yeah, you can keep your old number but you'll have to port the number out to a different provider and then port it back in while signing up again.

Someone posted a sim hopping guide below though.

        • Each different PHONE NUMBER/SIM is the different 'account'. (I activated 3x SIMS last month, in the same month, using the same name, email, address.)

so I have to actvate new sims + voucher when the old one runs out?

Yes. Port out and in again and then activate SIM #2, or, just toss the 'empty' SIM #1 and activate a fresh SIM #2.

  • Have been unable to activate mine as won't accept my card in the final activation step, has before, same for a friend who has never been with kogan.

    • The name on the card must match exact to the name you're using to activate the sim.

      • Also do it in capitals, thats what worked for me..they also told me i had to wait 24 hrs..lucky i had 3 credit cards!

      • Don't think that is the reason it fails. My name is like this on my card: "John S Paul" But I never enter it that way - always: "John Paul" - and it always works. I always activate late at night and don't have the problems other people do.

    • Over a month ago I had the same problem. Eventually one of my cards worked.

Tried again for my second phone and same thing at activation, it doesn't work - even though I'm using the same card, details etc as my other account from my first activation.

I've called support who are really useless and cannot do anything but read a script. They say to wait 24 hours if you've tried after 5 times and failed. I did that and I'm back to fighting with scripted help support. I've given up…

If anyone can shed some light, please do..

      • +2

Same problem before but I figured out what was wrong, i put extra space behind the name because I'm using autofill from chrome. Make sure you double check that entries.

        • I still can't get it to work…very frustrating

          But thanks for your help.

        • @KitchenSink: Actually… I think I do remember now, one time it acted up. I was clicking into the fields, and it was autofilling text from previous sessions. So I typed the entire line of info in again manually with the keyboard and that worked. People might like to try that.

    • I had the same issue bought 4 x $1 extra huge plan but was only able to activate twice one month after next port out than in again. I then rang and got a very helpful foreign call center person and she did it for me despite always got stuck on my credit card. Kogan is overkill they first ask for drivers license then ask for credit card after so really it is not for identity reasons as the drivers license already does that don't know why they ask for credit card details after they ask for drivers license someone might want to question the ombudsman why they allow this practice to continue.

    • I had an issue that was due to having a trailing space after the card number. Make sure if you're copying and pasting that there are no weird characters at the end.

  • +1

Isn't this available for new customers only, though?

    • Yes it is.
You can port in and out though :)

      • +1

Glad to see new customers mentioned in the title now, thanks Spackbace for editing. I got excited thinking I wouldn't have to port in and out again. it's getting tiring!

        • All good :)

    • +25

Here's a shameless pitch for my recent guide on sim hopping :)

      • Have a shameful + for your shameless plug :)

      • Just read it, really informative. Good stuff

      • Thanks anonym, very helpful, you should turn it into a wiki page.

      • Nice writeup, wish id seen this when i was just starting hopping last year

    • It's more like: "new account", than "new customer".

e.g. You can buy 5x SIMS, activate #1 and use it up in 2 days, activate #2 and use it up in a week, activate #3 etc.

So you can burn through all 5 in one day if you like. But to transfer the PHONE NUMBER of SIM #1, onto SIM #2, you have to port out to another company and then back in to SIM #2.

(So if you had a second SIM for calls, and the Kogan was mainly for data - there's no need to port. Just activate the next new SIM.)

  • Keep asking the question to the seasoned OzBargainers - if I am on Kogan already, which SIM to jump to (for a day) before going back to Kogan?

    • +1

      Why go for a day?
Get the Yomojo deal TA posted with Cash rewards then port back to Kogan once it's finished.

    • You can really use any sim but it's preferable not to use one on the Vodafone network, since it's the same network that Kogan uses.

I use Woolworths Mobile $2 sim. It has easy signup and activation process.

      • Pretty sure I read either here or on whirlpool, it makes no difference - other than the port can be quick (couple of hours or less).

  • +1

Voucher expires at 11:59pm AEST on 31/08/2017.

Also the same expiry as the 365 days voucher specials.

  • +1

i already have a 365 voucher which i am yet to activate, but can i activate this first then recharge with that?

But will the 365 voucher then apply when its been activated on my account, or when this 30 days expires?

    • I am in the exact same scenario and would like to know.

      • You have to tell Kogan to apply the 365 coupon. Let the month recharge expire and then recharge using the 365 day coupon.

        • Was about to reply this ^ (I'm literally still recharged on the 1$ deal from the start of the year) but you have to let it expire and complain its not working (or some scenario like that) the only problem is its down the support staff basically (messing up?) turning it into just a normal big expiry recharge code.

        • @dfaktz:
So your saying you are on a 365 day prepaid deal but only paid $1?

        • @dan76n: Sorry, should have clarified his process seems the same but im not on the 365 deal.I'm talking about the 1$ sim that had a $40 (extra large) recharge come with it, so its cost me about $5 :P

        • @dfaktz:
Ok so you are calling up,and adding the $1 code to your existing account?

        • @dan76n: I'm using live-chat (less paid/looked after staff are always on live-chat) and saying the voucher i brought from them isn't working, usually either live-chat or an email a few hours later will come and say "we can see you didn't get to use your code, cause we're nice, use this code"

        • +1

thanks - just to clarify, so i can't apply the 365 code myself to recharge once the $4.90 month is over? must tell kogan to do it manually?

edit: alternatively, could just port in and out right?

        • +1

          @tj12345:

No you can apply the 365 code at the end of the $4.90 code.
You can't apply a $4.90 code on a $4.90 code unless you play roulette with the chat people.

        • @dan76n: easy thanks!

  • Been chewing through data the last couple of months. Offside internet has been average so have been relying on mobile data almost exclusively.

I've exhausted 3 Telstra $30/3gb packs(paid $10 a pop way back,am on the 3rd one now) in the last 2 months and have just bought this, the amaysim deal and the yomojo deal.

Going forward, what would be the wisest way to keep adding data packs? Port in/out or sim hop with a the 4g modem as I've been doing?

    • +2

You could try ovo their prices are pretty good for data (Optus). $29 for 13gb.

I've been using them with a 4G modem while renting and am very happy. I needed more days so purchased another ovo sim.

      • Thanks! I'll look into it. Short term bandaid anyway. I'm hoping a few new uni deals with extra data start to come through - either that or my job conditions will change by the end of the year!

        • Or do what I do.

          1. Cheapest phone SIM you can find that suits, goes into phone. e.g. 365 days, or look on www.whistleout.com.au
          2. Kogan data SIM goes in the modem - and laptop & phone connect to it via wifi

There are 365-day phone plans for about $10-$14/m I think. So $10-$14 phone + $4.95 Kogan = $14.95-$24/m for calls and 14GB data.

Or just do #1 and annoy everyone by sending them the new phone number every 30 days. (Don't bother porting.)

        • @GregMonarch: Yeah that's just it. I'd probably end up going the annoying option, as I couldn't be bothered with the port in/out business. But, if it's not my sole number, then it wouldn't really matter if there were delays with the porting option.

I'd just prefer a constant backup option in the event there wasn't a current deal running.

Cheers for the advice. thumbs up

        • @db87: I normally have a 365 expiry on my main phone number with $10 credit on it in a spare phone (people can call me/text me all they want). Then I just use a new sim/number with another (my main) phone whenever they go on special.

        • @techboy:

Yeah that's pretty much how I'm rolling now.

Just don't want to look like a bikie/terrorist with multiple numbers attached to my name. Haha

I'll attempt to keep them to a minimum, I've got 4 at the moment including my main number so I'll start porting every so often now I suppose. I have more permutations at least which should mean less porting overall.

        • @techboy: which provider / 365 day plan?

  • -1

Absolute waste of time and money, have done everything I can to activate sims but constant error of name doesn't match. Have tried every combination multiple cards and same error. Call centre is a waste of time. Sim cards are going in bin, never again kogan.

    • +1

I signed up before under my name. Have you tried signing up with a different name? I had the same problem, then I signed up with my wife's name and used her credit card and it worked.

      • I've used five of these SIMS so far. Used the same name each time. Try clearing browser cache/cookies, and register late at night/early am (say, 9pm-6am).

    • -2

      Sorry about your experience!

Strange I've never had any problems activating and I'm up to my 6th or 7th voucher/SIM.

I'm happy to take your voucher/s off your hands if you're not going to be using?

    • +1

Your sign up name and name on credit card MUST MATCH.

If you put mickey mouse in your sign-up name then you need to put mickey mouse in your CC details

      • They did match. Tried a few credit cards used sane fonts everything. Correct details it's just a flawed system.

      • I am not the only person that has had the same problem

        • There's an activation limit per credit card.
If you activate too many cards or if kogan doesn't like your cc you need to switch to another.

I've had to rotate like 4 of my cards so far (some debit cards)

        • +2

@cwongtech: I'm the same boat with @buyswapsell. It's a flawed system and their support is just as bad. I have gone through 5 cards, all carefully typed (now I know all my CC details off my head typing it in this much) in with matching names (even using all CAPITAL variations) according each CC respectfully and get rejected every time. Waited 48 hours (they said 24 hours) to do again and same result. They don't want my money it seems.

On my main SIM that is activated with Kogan somehow from last month - I used that exact same card and details initially (even copied and pasted with no spaces at the back) and I still get rejected. The same CC is in their system for auto recharge! Reason I need to use the same details is because I need to port over a number. I've even tried another SIM (ordered 3) and still get rejected. Tried without the port, same result.

Kogan Support said I can use the same details and it should work provided you havent activated more than 4 SIMs with them. I only have 1 activated.

I asked support if they can do it from their end manually but they seem reluctant to do anything but to read off the websites FAQ and script. I've given up. It shouldn't be this difficult to just activate a SIM, let alone have a manual system via phone support to do it if all else fails or something else.

        • -1

I have never used my credit cards with kogan before and have never activated a sim with them. Everything was accurate and matched and should of worked

      • Does it matter who buys the voucher code? I intend to buy the voucher code but give it to my dad. So if I read correctly, my dad needs to activate the sim in his name with his CC in his name, and that should be fine.

        • It doesn't matter who purchases the voucher code.

The only thing that matters is the activation name MUST be the same as the name on the credit card, regardless of whether if Mickey Mouse actually owns the credit card

        • @cwongtech:

I've activated Kogan sims for 2 other people and also myself using my own visa debit card.

        • @tranter:
Same. But there's a point where the kogan system will stop accepting your card.

        • @cwongtech:

          Thx cwong

        • @cwongtech
Maybe, but not necessarily because the names are different. Some users are activating for the first time and still not working. Some can only activate 3 or 4 times on the same card and with others it seems there is no limit. There's no hard and fast rule here as to what works and what doesn't.

    • Just cause you coudlnt figure it out doesnt make it not a deal. I had the same problme and then realised that it was the slightest difference in credit card detail and name, i entered Mrs instead of miss.

  • I'm looking into tethering my PC to this sim card.

How do the download rates compare to that of Telstra in Sydney?

    • +1

Depends on suburb. For my location, Vodafone is the best. At $5, just get it and see.

    • Yeah, everywhere is different - even from suburb to suburb probably. I have a Jeenee (Optus) SIM and Kogan SIM. Kogan (Vodafone) is faster: rural NSW.

  • I hope this is not the end of the $1 deal

  • i only have a locked telstra 3G phone. Will this sim activate in a unlocked 2G phone and then work in a unlocked 3G router

    • The Kogan SIM is 3G/4G. So I would assume calls will work on a 2G phone, but data won't. Try anyway. If it doesn't just borrow someone's phone for ten minutes, then insert into router.

  • Thanks, just in time for school holiday trip away. 14GB "should" keep the kids occupied.

    • My registration, to help others. Name on CC: MR RAY W SMITH…….therefore registration went like:

      Mr

      Firstname: RAY W
      Surname: SMITH

      Hope this helps someone.

      ** Not real name

  • So I'm about to jump ship from Vaya to Kogan. I have already registered one of these $1 / 14GB sims to test my reception and speed. All good. Looking to get the 365 deal now ($205 per year / $15 per month for 5GB) so as I'm bringing my own number can I register the 365 sim with the same email address etc. as I did with the $1 sim? They won't recognise that I have already registered with them and tell me to log into my account?

Do I just port to Kogan and retain my own number and then contact Vaya about my $20 refund?

    Thanks

    • can I register the 365 sim with the same email address etc. as I did with the $1 sim?

If done in that order ($1 SIM used first, 365 day registered 2nd), then of course. Because the $1 SIM is for 'new customers', to 'introduce' them to Kogan - and the 365 is activated after the first SIM runs out - for ongoing (12 month) customers.

They won't recognise that I have already registered with them and tell me to log into my account?

If done in that order you mentioned, it doesn't matter. However, each different phone number/SIM is another account if you're not porting. So you use up the $1 SIM, then add the the 365 activation to that SIM when the 30 days expires… Or, just discard the $1 SIM and start using the 365 SIM with its new/different phone number.

Do I just port to Kogan…

Yes. Don't tell Vaya yet - Kogan does.

      and retain my own number

      If you're porting, yes.

and then contact Vaya about my $20 refund?

I think so. It might take a while to get through their thick skulls though. ;-D Check/ask in the Vaya thread on Whirlpool though. Pretty sure you port to Kogan, Kogan tells Vaya you've gone, then once the port has been successful, you phone Vaya - a dozen times - go grey - scream at the wife and kick the cat - get the refund - and your bank account gets debited for another few months which you also have to fight to get back. (Think that's typical Vaya service, anyway.)

      • Perfect, thanks mate.

        • Just mention you are going to TIO for a smoother exit.

      • Guys.. I find VAYA Facebook messaging the easiest form to get your refund back. Doesn't seem the same terrible personnel 2 years ago that took days to respond. Takes a few hours now, try that :)

    • Your math is a bit off mate, 205 per year = roughly $17.083 per month.

      • Yea, sorry I meant around $15 when I was taking into consideration the $20 refund as well from Vaya.

  • Can I use that for visitors? I already have 3 free sims.

  • I had my Telstra prepaid laying around not used for about 3 months, finally got the Kogan sim and ported it across, painless and perfect timing for school holidays… works perfectly and ported under 1 hour…

Bit hesitant to port my main number, but gather if it will save me $600/year on current plan it's well worth it…

Telstra really need to take note of there shitty prices too!!!

    • Do you need Credit Card during the activation?

      • Yes, you need credit card for security check only, you do not need a credit card for regular recharges

        • Thanks I need three so I need to use three accounts three cc to activate three sim or I can use mine?

        • @superforever:

I haven't tried a 2nd account yet, I will soon after my Telstra prepaid has expired, I did it on a spare one to test and it worked fine… then again quite nervous to do the 2nd account as this is my main account

Yes you need a separate account for another service.

In your case 3 services and 3 accounts (mine would be 2)

        • @DanielR:

It asked for driver license or passport etc.

I assume I cannot use all of them with my ID, right? Actually can activate 3 sims with my ID?

But buying the plan doesn't matter, right? I can use my account to buy 3 plans for them.

        • I've just activated a second SIM as new account but using same email & CC as the first.
The account activated without any problem.

        • @timhn:

Thanks trying it now, see how long the voucher code will arrive.

          I need it tomorrow.

EDIT: Done activated 3 sim cards bought 3 x 4.95 plan under one Kogan account.

      • I use a Visa debit card from a building society. So you don't need it to specifically be a "credit card".

        • I used my ID and the same credit card to activate all 3 sim cards, all good no problem.

  • Thanks kindly. I brought 1 at $4.90 and added a $0 sim card to the order.
Will get to tested reception is usual rural spots before porting my number.
    Cheers

  • I'm looking to get the Kogan 365 days large voucher for ~$250. Could I purchase both of these and activate them both on the same number?

    https://www.kogan.com/au/buy/kogan-mobile-prepaid-voucher-co…

  • Thanks OP, just bought.

  • Damn, looks like its out of stock :(
If anyone has a spare code lmk and i'll paypal you for it.
