If you’ve been diagnosed with hypertension, discuss with your GP whether you should measure your blood pressure at home, how often and at what times:

  • It can help give you a better understanding of your condition, and motivate you to lower your blood pressure by changing your lifestyle.
  • It provides your GP with additional measurements that they can use to monitor your condition or adjust your medication.
  • Some people can’t help getting nervous when visiting a doctor, which increases their blood pressure: it’s called ‘white-coat hypertension’. If this happens to you, measuring blood pressure in the more relaxed environment of your home may be a better way for you to get accurate readings.

  • I bought an ex-demo unit of one of these on here a few weeks ago.

It's pretty simple. You have to sit in a certain position, strap it to your wrist and press a few buttons. Then it inflates, takes a reading, deflates, and shows it to you.

Pretty interesting. If you wanted something to monitor your blood pressure continuously while you do other things, this probably isn't it (and may not even be possible). But if you just want to try it out from time to time to monitor your blood pressure, it works okay.

  • Wrist type machines are not very accurate. The arm ones are much more accurate. You shouldn't be doing anything else while taking your blood pressure with either one.
DSE has got Homemedics arm ones for around $69, and Chemist Warehouse got lowest end Omron arm ones for around $65. Much better off getting the Omron Arm one from Chemist Warehouse.
